exploring international terminal expansion

Melbourne Airport is working to finalise the details of a major international terminal expansion, following 12 months of engagement with airlines to deliver increased terminal capacity and an enhanced experience for passengers.

It follows the busiest month on record for international travel at Melbourne Airport, with 1,147,533 international passengers using the airport in December.

International seat capacity into Australia’s largest 24-hour airport is at an all-time high, at 113 per cent of pre- pandemic levels, which is putting pressure on existing facilities.

Foreign airlines account for 72 per cent of all international seat capacity into Victoria, and major carriers understand the current constraints and the need for expansion....

Cybercriminals and state-sponsored hackers persistently target Australian governments, businesses, and households | ASD's 2023–24 Annual Cyber Threat Report

ASD's Annual Cyber Threat Report 2023–24Australia faces the most complex and challenging strategic environment since the Second World War. These strategic challenges extend to the cyber threat landscape. While advancements in critical and emerging technologies offer significant social and economic benefits, they also improve the capabilities of malicious cyber actors who continue to target Australia's networks.

In FY2023-24, ASD received over 36,700 calls to its Australian Cyber Security Hotline, an increase of 12% from the previous financial year. ASD also responded to over 1,100 cyber security incidents, highlighting the continued exploitation of Australian systems and ongoing threat to our critical networks....

Grain Industry | GRDC investment supporting the next generation pursuing careers in agricultural research

GRDC investment is supporting students who are being train

To solve evermore complex food production challenges, agricultural scientists found it necessary to create an entirely new class of capabilities.

Only too recently, these capabilities were considered the domain of science fiction – autonomous robots, for example, or light-based diagnostic devices that bear an uncanny resemblance to a Star Trek tricorder.

The manner in which agricultural science has had to reinvent itself, however, had an additional impact. It generated an impetus to innovate the way the next generation of agricultural scientists are trained. This is driven by a need to better expose students to interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving and to the integrated nature of the agricultural research and development pipelines.....

FCAI Acknowledges Government Action to Support Sales

Australia’s peak automotive industry group has supported the Commonwealth Government’s decision to encourage an increase of battery electric vehicles sales with the introduction of $150 million of low interest loans for workers earning less than $100,000 per year and also essential workers.

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said that Australia was mirroring global trends showing a slowdown in the growth of full battery electric vehicle sales, in spite of the increasing number of brands and models entering the Australian market.

“Growth in demand for battery electric vehicles is easing in markets around the world as governments remove incentives and consumers face the realities of making the shift which includes higher purchasing prices, availability of recharging infrastructure and models that meet their work and recreation needs,” Mr Weber said.....

No reward for being loyal: Australians urged to shop around for a better value electricity plan

This is the ACCC's twelfth report as part of its inquiry into the prices, profits and margins in the supply of electricity in the National Electricity Market (NEM).

This report extends our December 2023 analysis of pricing outcomes for existing customers on flat rate offers, and how these prices compare to the default offer prices and to new acquisition offers in the market. For the first time in this inquiry, we have collected additional information from retailers on time of use and demand offers. Our dataset covers over 6.7 million residential customers (78% of residential customers in the National Electricity Market) and 400,000 small business customers....

AFP empties the wallets of money laundering crime syndicates in 2024

The AFP has charged 126 people with 158 money laundering offences in 2024, as part of ongoing operational priorities to target these enterprises and hit criminal groups in their wallets.

As a result of these arrests, the AFP-led Criminal Assets Confiscation Taskforce (CACT) has seized or restrained around $23.4 million in criminal assets associated with money-laundering offences, causing significant disruptions to criminal networks across the country.

Recent investigations have exposed the extent of large-scale and systemic money laundering throughout Australia, which is estimated to run into billions of dollars.....

Disruptions and price rises persist in the container freight supply chain | ACCC report

Global and domestic disruptions continue to destabilise the container freight supply chain, leading to congestion, delays and higher costs, which resulted in some importers having to pay four to 11 times as much for ocean freight as a year earlier, according to the 2023-24 ACCC Container stevedoring monitoring report.

During 2024, the ACCC conducted a detailed examination of charges levied by stevedores to transport operators over the past seven years, known as landside charges. The ACCC also conducted enquiries into charges levied by empty-container parks to transport operators, known as notification fees. The report raises concerns about limited competition on landside charges charged by stevedores and notification fees charged by empty-container parks leading to poor outcomes for Australian consumers and businesses.

The findings come after the container freight supply chain largely recovered from the disruptions of the pandemic, only to experience restrictions in the Panama Canal and attacks in the Red Sea causing shipping lines to avoid the Suez Canal.....

Invasive pest study points to improved responses

Detailed genomic analysis is a powerful new way to track and manage internationally invasive insect pest species, such as fall armyworm

Despite international and national biosecurity precautions, the invasive fall armyworm (FAW) moth (Spodoptera frugiperda) is on the move.

At CSIRO, researchers led by Dr Wee Tek Tay have spent the past five years determining how it spreads to better understand which global biosecurity pathways to prioritise as surveillance hotspots. A key aim was to better prepare for future biosecurity incursions and improve post-invasion control measures.

What his team and collaborators found has shattered pre-existing narratives about the moth’s global movement eastward from its native range in the Americas via the occurence of a single introduction....

ACCC proposes to authorise major supermarkets to continue cooperation on soft

The ACCC is proposing to grant authorisation with conditions to the major supermarkets Coles Group, Woolworths Group and ALDI Stores, to continue their collaboration to recycle stockpiled soft plastics and continue with the pilot in-store collection program until 31 July 2026.The ACCC is currently seeking feedback on this proposed further authorisation. The ACCC first authorised this collaboration on 30 June 2023, following the collapse of REDcycle, which operated a soft plastics collection and recycling program.

In July 2024, the ACCC granted interim authorisation that allowed the supermarkets to continue to collaborate through the Soft Plastics Taskforce as the previously authorised conduct was due to expire....
