Panton Hill CFA Panton Hill Volunteer Fire Brigade, in continuous operation since 1939, protecting our community. Many did not return. Fourteen homes were lost in Panton Hill.

History of the Panton Hill Brigade

Early Years

The first attempt to form a rural bush fire brigade in Panton Hill was in 1914. The war intervened and called away the young men who would have been the fire-fighters. During the nineteen-twenties Ford and Chevrolet motor trucks arrived in the area, used by local farmers and orchardists to take their produce to the Melbourne market. These became i

nstrumental in fighting fires. If the school bell rang at any unusual time the growers and farmers would leave their work, whether their trucks were full, half loaded or empty, and would head straight for the fire, picking up all available men on the way. As water was not available most of the time, the fires were fought with ancient weapons: wet sacks, axes, rakes and green boughs. This spontaneous but effective response continued until January 1939 when the community decided a more organised approach was needed and the Panton Hill Volunteer Fire Brigade was founded. For eighty years since the Brigade has protected the Panton Hill area and fought fires with other brigades across the state. Much of the history of the brigade, including personal recollections and many photographs, is captured in โ€œHear The Sirenโ€, published in 1990. Some copies of this fascinating book are still available for those who are interested in a fuller account than can be rendered here. Two events of major significance, however, we can describe: the fires of 1962 and 1983.

1962 Fires

Between January 14th and 16th 1962 the most devastating fire in memory ravaged Panton Hill and surrounding areas. Beginning in Christmas Hills on the Sunday it first travelled north until the Tuesday when a northerly wind blew it south through St Andrews, Smiths Gully, Panton Hill, Kangaroo Ground and Warrandyte, then on to Wonga Park and Mitcham, stopping only when the weather cooled and rain fell. There would have been more but for the tireless efforts of the brigade right through the days of the fire, defending houses with equipment that seems far from adequate by modern standards. A dramatic photo of the burning Matthews property on the Kangaroo Ground road appeared in newspapers around the world. Ash Wednesday 1983

Ash Wednesday, February 16th 1983, saw fires of terrible speed and ferocity in several parts of Victoria that claimed some sixty-nine lives. The Cockatoo fire is the one most well remembered in Panton Hill. Tragically, five of the Brigade were trapped in a narrow forest track in Upper Beaconsfield when the wind turned, and died when their tanker was overrun by flames. With them the six member crew from Narre Warren suffered the same fate. A memorial park in the centre of Panton Hill township gives tribute to their service and provides a venue for concerts and other social activities, reminding us not only of the sacrifice of those men, but also of the central role the Brigade has played over the years in bringing the community together. And on the end wall of the station, at right angles to the long row of pegs on which we hang our yellow helmets and wildfire clothes, our blue structure jackets, there is a polished plank of rich-grained wood that bears five empty pegs. They are wrought from aged iron spikes and each has a simple plaque with a name:

Maurice Atkinson - Stuart Duff- Neville - Jeffrey - Bill Marsden - Peter Singleton

There are brigade members still who knew those men as friends and others, the majority now, who did not: we all remember them.

Got an electric gate, or thinking of installing one? ๐Ÿšชโšก๏ธ

Secured electric gates can delay us during an emergency, especially if no one is home, wasting valuable time that could make the difference in saving your home.

We strongly recommend adding a contact number to your gate so we can reach you to gain access โ€” whether itโ€™s via a keypad code, hidden button, or phone remote. If you're ever unsure about a call, you can contact the station on (03) 9719 7382 or check the Vic emergency page/app for a reported incident https://www.emergency.vic.gov.au/respond/ ๐Ÿ“ฑ

The brigade can provide you with a suitable tag, for the low, low price of $20 considered a donation for our training and equipment!! The tag is self adhesive and can be any size, metal or plastic.

If you're interested, please message with details or give us a bell.๐Ÿ™‚

๐Ÿšจ Important Safety Message ๐Ÿšจ

Illegal fireworks are not only dangerous and can cause serious injuries, but they also have the potential to spark grass and bushfires.

There has been significant grass growth across many areas of the state, and with these fuels drying out quickly, there is a real risk of vegetation fires. Each year, fires started by illegal fireworks cause significant damage and put our community at risk.

We encourage everyone to attend public firework shows to celebrate the New Year safely, rather than setting off illegal fireworks. These displays can lead to severe property damage, serious burns, or even death.

๐Ÿšจ Stay safe and report illegal fireworks ๐Ÿšจ
If you have any information about the sale or use of illegal fireworks, please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at: www.crimestoppersvic.com.au/report-a-crime

Message from Captain Simon Wallace.

"As 2024 ends, I would like to share my reflections on the year.

Our volunteer brigade has had a very busy year. In addition to responding to over 50 local emergencies, we took part in strike teams to the February Ararat fires, and to the Bullengarook and Grampian fires this summer. Locally the last 3 months has been extremely busy with out of control burn offs, grass and scrub fires, car accidents as well as a structure fire.

We celebrated our 85th anniversary as a volunteer brigade and reflected on the 41st anniversary of Ash Wednesday with the tragic loss of colleagues, and the 15th anniversary of Black Saturday. We were proud to see our own David Gedge recognised for his 35 years of active service to the brigade and our community. Sadly, we also bade farewell to ex-Captain Charlie Oโ€™Day (1973-79), who passed away in June.

As a small community, we are blessed to have such a great number of volunteers who commit their time and energy to protecting the community. Like any organisation you are only as good as the people around you and there is no truer example than the Panton Hill brigade.

The members have spent countless hours training and running educational sessions at the school and for the community. In addition to emergency responses, we participated in fun events like the school Easter egg hunt, Good Friday appeal (raising over $3,500), and of course our annual Santa Run

We are also excited to welcome new members โ€“ Clint, Kristen, Peter, Russell, Sue, Alex, and Rhys - and we know they will not only gain knowledge and skills relating to weather, fire behaviour and how to best prepare a property, but are confident they will be very valuable brigade assets.

I was proud to be part of our 14 members that were recognised for their dedication and bravery during the 2019/2020 โ€œBlack Summer" event by being awarded the National Emergency Medal. For me, itโ€™s a privilege and honour to be Captain for what is no doubt the best group of brigade members in Victoria.

Finally, I wish you all a fantastic 2025 that only delivers happiness, prosperity and health to you and your family."

Simon Wallace

The 2024 brigade calendar sponsor for December is the Panton Hill Hotel. We would like to recognise and say thank you to the pub for the generous support.

Winslow is the major sponsor for the calendar.

Both these groups contribute to the equipment and services we provide to the community at the Panton Hill Rural Fire Brigade.

Our tanker crew were on their night shift last night, patrolling the Grampians fire edge and conducting asset protection at Moyston.

๐Ÿ“ธ First photo: The briefing.
๐Ÿ“ธ Last photo: A smoke-laden sunrise as they wrapped up this morning after a long night.

Night shift is a wearying business. Hopefully the guys manage to get some good rest today before gearing up for another busy night.

๐Ÿšจ With growing concern about weather conditions on Thursday and Friday (26 and 27th) and large fires already burning in Victoria, emergency services are mobilising resources. ๐Ÿšจ

Panton Hill brigade is contributing a tanker crew, which will be stationed in Western Victoria, and the brigade's Ultralight with a crew which will return to the Bullengarook fire. Both will leave Thursday morning and will be away for 3 to 5 days.

Our 2 tankers will still be in station for local response, and enough of our volunteers will be on call to crew them. Remember, however, that a fire starting on an Extreme-rated day will spread quickly and be extremely dangerous. The best option is to leave high-risk areas in the morning or the night before.

The Fire Danger Rating for tomorrow is Extreme, and a Total Fire Ban has been declared across the state.

Whether itโ€™s rescheduling travel, closing your business, or postponing gatherings, prioritising safety is what truly matters. With Extreme fire danger ratings and temperatures soaring into the high 30s and early 40s, itโ€™s smart to put safety first.

Plans can be changed, but you canโ€™t undo a disaster. Stay safe, everyone! For updates, visit VicEmergency ๐Ÿ”ฅ

In a brigade landmark this year, we were proud to see David Gedge recognised for his 35 years of active service to the brigade and our community. Dave was presented with a CFA 35 Year Service Medal by District 14 Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Tim Holland.

Dave joined the brigade in 1988 after he moved to Smiths Gully, but his connection to the area started earlier - travelling to help with the 1962 fires. Over the years, David has held numerous important roles, including Captain, Communications Officer, and 2nd & 3rd Lieutenant.

Congratulations Gedgie! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿš’
