The end of Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS).

Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) has been dazzling stargazers recently, delivering quite the celestial spectacle. This rare visitor was discovered last year through the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) and became a standout because of its daringly close approach to the Sun in mid-January. It ventured closer than even Mercury dares, passing at about one-third of Mercury’s nearest distance to the Sun.

Unfortunately, this solar encounter came at a cost—Comet ATLAS didn’t leave unscathed. The Sun’s intense heat and gravitational forces obliterated its nucleus, effectively decapitating the comet. A long-period traveller, this cosmic wanderer had been on a 160,000-year journey around the Sun. Comet ATLAS won’t be making a comeback. The cloud will still be visible on camera and binoculars for a few more days.

The Mt Lindsay, Rotary lookout was absolutely packed tonight with stargazers catching a glimpse of the Comet. I counted 200+ people & the cars filled the carpark from Dalton Street to the top & on the grassed area.
Was so good to see & talk to lots of people. 👍

It was awesome to see so many comet gazers turn up on the Mt Lindsay lookout tonight to get a glimpse of the comet. It did not disappoint. The cloud cover threatened at first, however, cleared up just in time for the star of the show.

Deep Purple is the final colour stage of a sunset when the cloud conditions are right. A 2 second long exposure shot was required for this one to gather as much light on the camera sensor as possible due to the sky being quite dark. 9/12/2024
