Opening out with the soulful moods of , followed up by the fully sick alt rock of , and chased down with our very-own equally-rad rockers .

Future Beings is a free-entry, "pay-what-you-feel" cause; all the money donated is given directly to our wonderful local artists who inspire such feeling.

New mics in the deluxe room! You would be hard pressed to find a review that doesn’t put the sE v7 mic miles ahead of the Shure SM58 which we (and the wider live music industry) traditionally roll with. Keen to hear what the consensus is - might be that we buy a few more!

Thank you to everyone who has given the new Production / Recording studio a little tickle over the last month or so. We genuinely appreciate the support!

On the back of some feedback, we decided we step into the recording space a little further and acquired some pretty cool gear:

1. Newton Channel strip - (yes, Neve as in Neve1073 preamp module), this is an all-in preamp, EQ and compressor strip.

2. .berlin u87 - there’s very few, if any, more famous mics on the planet responsible for so many massive recordings.

3. SM7b - a robust and reliable workhorse. This model came up time and time again so we thought we should get one.

The SM7b will come as standard in the room in place of the NT2a (WHICH we have a very good use for coming up) as well as the RND Newton Channel Strip. The u87 will be an optional extra.

Anyway, IYKYK. If you don’t, that chain is pretty high spec - and we’re making it available for our bands / artists to access.

With three kids, including this absolute gremlin, managing the studio and Dan working full time, we struggle to get to as many gigs as we used to. Which is ironic given our industry and a bummer because it was such a big part of our lives before PCC.

So we try find other ways to do our bit to support the bands that support us.

1. If your band has released vinyl, we want to buy a copy!

2. If you have a EP or LP launch coming up or perhaps you’re organising a little backyard festival, we can contribute backline or PA.

3. Brushing up at the studio before a major release and trying to save dosh? We will knock off the price of two tickets from your sess - one for me, one for Dan.

4. Got a business related to music? Feel free to use the studio as a connection point for clients / sell your wares.

We’re also looking at ways to establish a physical ‘store’ of sorts at the studio for our bands to sell their merch and / or releases from - the concept would be that all PROCEEDS will go straight to the bands. But we still have a bit to figure out with this one!

After weeks of working after work and on weekends, we’re stoked to be able to (finally) say:

The Production Room is ready to roll!

Perhaps it’s a case of semantics but we think that it could be a lil disingenuous to lay claim to being a “recording studio” - certainly in consideration of all the amazing recording studios around Fremantle and Perth - but we’re comfortable leaning into the production realm.

We’ve built this for the in-house(band) sound
engineers, the bedroom producer, the visiting producer; folk looking for a safe and inclusive working environment to write, track, record and mix using quality gear to complement their DAW of choice.

Comes standard with:

Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 interface
Yamaha HS8 monitors
Rode NT2A or Sennheiser 421, SM57 and an Audix mic sets
Komplete Kontrol S49 mk2 MIDI keyboard
Fender ‘65 Twin Reverb guitar amp
34” Computer screen, keyboard and mouse.

It also has a Tascam Model 16 in there that can be used as a mixer, interface or standalone recording unit - more to come on this….

We’d love to hear from you as to other gear that you’d like to see in the Production Room - we’re currently looking at getting a higher end vocal mic (perhaps a Neumann of some description??), dedicated vocal interface and compressor rack - in any case, let us know and we shall investigate!

We are also in the process of connecting this room to every other room at Pen Cap which would effectively turn the space into a control room…and perhaps we would be a step closer to becoming a “recording studio”; albeit, a DIY one. In the meantime, the desk is on wheels and can be moved around if needed!
