LIVE BUSH FIRE READY
We live with bush fires in the Shoalhaven, so we have to 'Live Bush Fire Ready'. This means understanding our risk, preparing our home and having a plan with our family and work colleagues.
You're not alone. RFS fire fighters are opening their doors this coming weekend, September 21 and 22 and will be on hand to share their knowledge and understanding with our community. Let's do this together - Let's 'Live Bush Fire Ready'.

PREPARE YOUR FAMILY | PREPARE YOUR HOME
No one wants to be impacted by a bush or grass fire and whilst we have had a wet winter, these past few weeks have already shown us how quickly conditions can turn around.
The fact is that the Shoalhaven will experience bush and grass fires and we need to 'Live Bush Fire Ready'. But what exactly does this mean?
It will mean something different to each person, just as each persons bush fire plan will be different to match their personal circumstances.
GET READY WEEKEND
Over the month of September, culminating on the weekend of September 21 and 22 we are encouraging all Shoalhaven residents to 'Get Ready' and to visit an RFS fire station to chat with local RFS fire fighters who can share preparedness tips, validate plans and show you the types of activities you can undertake to prepare your family and to prepare your home.
It's time to 'Get Ready' Shoalhaven. Stay tuned for more information and start to learn more at rfs.nsw.gov.au.

ONGOING INCIDENTS | RFS firefighters assisted by Fire and Rescue NSW and NPWS have attended numerous incidents across the Shoalhaven today.
Just after 11am over 15 fire trucks responded to a scrub fire in Culburra Beach on the foreshore of Lake Wollumboola. It took several hours to bring under control and ground crews were assisted by a water bombing helicopter late in the day to deal with a number of flare ups.
Firefighters also responded to a caravan fully involved in fire and a number of pile burns which were at risk of escaping.
Remote area firefighters continued to work on the Monkey Mountain fire in steep rough terrain.
Thanks to the hard work of all firefighters both the Monkey Mountain and Culburra Beach fires have been contained. The incidents will continue to be patrolled overcoming days.
HIGH FIRE DANGER REMAINS
With gusty winds continuing over the coming days we would like to remind everyone not to conduct pile burns and if you have done so in the past few weeks, please check them again to ensure that they are safe.

FIRE PERMITS REQUIRED FROM SEPTEMBER 1
If you are intending to conduct any hazard reduction burning such as pile burns, from Sunday September 1 you will require a fire permit from the RFS.
Note: If you live within the 'City limits' of Nowra or Ulladulla you need a permit 365 days a year (Fire and Rescue NSW administer these areas). If you're not sure, our system will let you know when you pop your address in....
Applying for a permit is online and easy. The video link below will walk you through the process. The more information you include the better - such as whether or not you have machinery on site, the number of piles you are intending to burn, their size (they should ideally be no bigger than 1.5m x 1.5m) and what water supply you have available to reach the piles.
An RFS permit officer will review the application on line and either approve the permit, decline it if there is a reason to do so or arrange a site visit. Once approved you need to notify via the same portal of your intended dates to conduct the activity.
THE BENEFITS OF ONLINE
You will be emailed a permit number and a burn notification reference when you notify. Keep these handy in case the RFS gets called to your property. You can create an account which will speed up the application and we can email you on days when you cannot burn off, such as HIGH fire danger days.
Be assured that local RFS permit holders still review the online application, utilising their sound local knowledge to help you out.
LANDOWNER OBLIGATIONS
As a land owner / land manager it is your responsibility to check the weather for the intended day of burning and the ensuring days thereafter. Fire agencies respond to a high number of escaped permit burns and fines do apply. If in doubt, delay the activity or seek advice from the RFS. It's also your responsibility to know what can and cannot be burnt! LGA's have different ordinance, so if in doubt, check!

RFS crews have attended over 30 incidents throughout the Shoalhaven since early this morning.
Trees and powerlines down, motor vehicle accident and bush/grass fires.
All but one incident is contained. A bushfire continues to burn in Termeil; there is no immediate threat to property. Crews were unable to safely gain access this evening and will return early in the morning with a drone to map the fire and develop an appropriate strategy.
Unfortunately several bush and grass fires started as a result of landowner hazard reductions and pile burns, some of which were undertaken only yesterday, ahead of the forecast gusty winds experienced today.
Strong winds return Friday, therefore we’re once again asking that pile burns not be conducted and that any hazard reduction conducted within the last 2 weeks be checked and re-checked.

Building Capability | RFS firefighters have joined a multi agency flood rescue training course here in the Shoalhaven.
Facilitated by Fire and Rescue NSW rescue trainers, the course will see the addition of over 30 local RFS flood rescue trained firefighters to our Shoalhaven emergency services capacity, with more to follow over the coming weeks.
This surge capacity is critical when the primary combat agency for floods, NSW SES calls on other emergency services for assistance during heightened and prolonged flood operations.

Northern NSW deployment
This afternoon 12 firefighters from Shoalhaven have deployed to Northern NSW.
With several fires yet to be controlled, including the Willi Willi Rd fire near Kempsey, their assistance will be quite timely.
KEEP UP-TO-DATE WITH HAZARDS IN YOUR AREA | For over a decade you have had bush fire information at your fingertips through the 'fires-near-me' app. The information available via the app has now expanded to include additional emergency information and advice, such as flood information from the NSW SES.
The updated app has been jointly developed by the NSW Department of Customer Service, the SES and the RFS.
If you have the 'Fires-Near-Me' app, you will need to go into the app store and search 'Hazards-Near-Me-NSW' and update the app, so you can benefit from the updated information.

NSW Rural Fire Service crews have worked throughout the morning in misty, damp conditions to consolidate the containment line around the Old Boxsells Rd fire, north of the Cambewarra Lookout Road.
The fire is now at Patrol status. It is likely that a few smouldering logs will produce smoke over the coming days, however these are well within containment lines. Brigades will undertake periodical observations from a vantage point as required.
This video from Thursday afternoon shows the terrain and work of the water bombing aircraft which assisted ground crews.
This will be the final update on this fire, unless the fire status is upgraded.
