Hayden Wilde's Fast Track to Taupō | EP 1
An Olympic Medalist. A Taupō native. A 2024 VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship Qualifier.
Hayden Wilde is a rising star in the world of professional Olympic distance triathlon, known for his incredible athleticism and charismatic personality. Born in Taupō, home of IRONMAN in New Zealand and host of the 2024 VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, Hayden is a true Kiwi. Now he’s after a spot on the start line at a home World Champs.
Starting out in triathlon after being inspired by the 2016 Olympics, Hayden quickly rose through the ranks, with his impressive bike and run ability quickly placing him amongst the world's best, culminating with an Olympic Bronze Medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
With his focus still on the top step of the dais in Paris next year, Hayden’s already got one eye on another prestigious medal – one that he can fight for right at home. With a World Champs in his backyard, the opportunity to step up in distance and compete for a world title is too hard to pass up.
We follow Hayden as he toes the start line at the 2023 IRONMAN 70.3 Melbourne, racing in only his second-ever IRONMAN 70.3, and his attempt to earn his slot and qualify for 2024.
This is his journey to race the world at home. This is Hayden Wilde’s Fast Track to Taupō.

His journey to Nutri-Grain IRONMAN New Zealand was not an easy one, and his disability never held him back.

Elle Goodall | IRONMAN Ambassador Athlete
When Elle Goodall crossed the finish line at IRONMAN 70.3 Cairns in 2017 she was greeted by her two very happy and very relieved parents Paul and Julie. Happy that they had just seen their daughter accomplish one of her amazing personal goals but more so relieved that they still had their daughter in their lives.
For Elle the race was another part of her incredible journey that had seen her rediscover herself and turn her life around, incredibly losing more than 120kg in in the process.
Elle’s weight peaked at 184kg and with that came a whole range of health, emotional and lifestyle issues.
“Life was incredibly difficult, I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t tie my own shoes, I couldn’t walk a 100m without having to sit down and have a rest. If I fell over I couldn’t get back up which was very embarrassing. For me back then it was normal, it was embarrassing but it was my life and how I was living.”
Over the past three years Elle has totally transformed herself physically through triathlon, from laying on the couch, to Enticer, Sprint, Olympic distance triathlon to the IRONMAN 70.3 and finally IRONMAN Cairns in June 2018. Inspiring others to also believe that “ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE”.
All the time, she fostered a dream to one day compete at the IRONMAN World Championship in Hawai`i. A dream that as an IRONMAN Ambassador Athlete is now a reality.
Leigh Chivers | IRONMAN Ambassador Athlete
Leigh Chiver’s journey with wife Sara and sons Hugh and Alfie is a story of intense love, passion, commitment, enormous strength, honouring of life and the desire to fulfil a promise.
In 2008, Sara fought and beat brain cancer only to have it return in March 2017. Then only six months later the couple were devastated to learn the unimaginable, that their 18 month old son Alfie was suffering a different yet equally devastating form of brain cancer.
Fighting pain and grief and having defied doctor’s predictions for months, in January 2018, at the age of 34, Sara finally lost her battle. Tragically less than six months later, Leigh and Hugh also lost Alfie.
“I have tried and lost this battle, brutally, twice. The future I thought I would have doesn’t exist anymore… for a lot of reasons, my future has lost a lot of the meaning and goals I previously used as fuel.,” Leigh said at the time.
“I have qualified before at IRONMAN Australia but I couldn’t go because Hugh was sick at the time. That is what this was all about, it was the thing that we were supposed to do, and we were going to do but never got around to. So, going to Hawai`i is about finishing this for both of us.”
One of Sara’s greatest wishes was for her husband to compete in the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, an opportunity Leigh had already qualified for in 2014 but had to forgo. Now as an IRONMAN Ambassador Athlete, Sara’s wish for her husband will come to fruition.
As if taking 4 days driving up to #tropicalnorthqueensland from Wollongong isn’t hard enough. Imagine keeping this helicopter flight a secret from the kids.

Get to the 'Epic'
Cape Epic is the gruelling 8-day mountain bike stage race that has quickly become the pinnacle race for mtb riders throughout the world.
A week out from the start of the inaugural Reef to Reef MTB stage race, where 10 coveted guaranteed entries for Cape Epic are up for grabs - Seven8 caught up with IRONMAN Oceania Managing Director Dave Beeche and team mate Will Turner – who managed to make it to the end of the ‘epic’ earlier this year.
A journey of self-discovery and challenge as a Tony Jackson Scholar
Following the first of two announcements for the Tony Jackson Scholarship the team from IRONMAN New Zealand arrived on the doorstep (quite literally) of the second scholars workplace in Dunedin.
A family-man dedicated to serving and assisting the community, a Paramedic both on the ground and in the air, a part of Surf Life Saving New Zealand and an Ambassador for the Key to Life Trust. Scott Weatherall can now add the Tony Jackson Scholarship recipient to his list of achievements.
#Seven8 was honoured to tag along with the friends, workmates, an extremely proud family and a personal video message from Verna Cook-Jackson, Tony’s wife, letting him know that she was honoured to award Scott the position of a Tony Jackson Scholar for #IMNZ in 2019.
Scott has a well-established passion for his work in the area of mental health and suicide prevention and the team at IRONMAN New Zealand believe #IMNZ will provide a great platform to further that great work.
Scott loves and shares Tony Jackson’s philosophy of ‘nothing is impossible…to the willing mind’’ and looks forward to representing both Tony and the Key to Life Trust, proudly raising awareness of mental health and suicide prevention through a personal journey of self-discovery and challenge.
The ‘Sheriff of Koutu’ a Tony Jackson Scholar
The Tony Jackson Scholarship was created in memory of Tony Jackson, an IRONMAN New Zealand 28 time finisher and Hall of Fame member.
The annual scholarship offers a deserving athlete an IRONMAN New Zealand event package (including entry), to enable them to participant in IRONMAN New Zealand. The scholarship is set up to support athletes that without this support may not be able to participate in the IRONMAN New Zealand event.
This year IRONMAN New Zealand are awarding two scholars and #Seven8 were fortunate to go along as we suprised the deserving recipients. Here we would like to introduce the first of two; Josh Te Kowahi (the ‘Sheriff of Koutu’).
He’s a father, businessman, former New Zealand representative in rugby and boxing, triathlete, volunteer and a personal trainer.
After a serious car accident in 2004 that left Josh with all the bones in his ankles broken, both knees shattered, a smashed jaw and all his teeth and broke both wrists and arms. He was told by doctors he would never walk, play sports and would need to look at a new career.
His partner Tairi describes him as “a mentor and inspiration to all those who cross his path. He realises the potential in everybody, focusses on the positives to help them smash personal goals.”
Tony Jackson’s motto in life was ‘Nothing is impossible…to the willing in mind’ and Josh certainly embodies this and more.
Congratulations to the ‘Sheriff of Koutu’, Josh Te Kowahi.
Blackchrome, Style and Cycling go hand in hand.
Looking the part is key in the world of cycling and the crew from Blackchrome Cycling have it bang on point. We caught up with General Manager and all round good guy, Travis Eddie, to talk about Velothon Sunshine Coast, their customisable kits and the good looking roosters hanging out in the clubhouse.
It's all about the vibe.
In summing up; it's the banter. It's Obi Obi. It's the vibe. No that's it, it's just the vibe...
We had a great weekend at the Velothon Sunshine Coast, meeting loads of great people sharing in some stories, having a laugh and checking out a few war wounds. A fantastic few days of riding on the beautiful Sunshine Coast.
