PAUL Niceforo has given up!

But not on his Provincial-Midway Championships winner Territory Express of course. Rather a barrier blanket.

Niceforo has dumped the blanket for the gelding’s Five Diamonds mission at Rosehill Gardens tomorrow.

“It hasn’t worked,” Niceforo said. “I’ve had it on Territory Express for a trial and two races, so it’s coming off.”

Niceforo understandably is delighted star apprentice Zac Lloyd is sticking with Territory Express for the $2m Five Diamonds (1800m). Read more 👇

Kembla Grange Racecourse’s marquee race day has been given another boost with the elevation of The Warra to a Group 3.

The 1000m sprint, which is sponsored by Snap Print Solutions Wollongong in 2024, is one of two features to be run at The Gong Race Day on Saturday, 23rd November.

The Warra carries a purse of $300,000 and has attracted strong fields since its inaugural running in 2021, with all three winners going on to enjoy stakes race success.

RACES have to be won on the track of course, and not given as handouts simply because someone deserves one!

But surely no one, aside from his rivals, would bedgrudge Gary Nickson winning today’s $200,000 Listed Lander Toyota Ladies Day Cup (1500m) at Hawkesbury Race Club Limited with Felix Majestic.

The Warwick Farm trainer still finds it hard to fathom why he never got the chance to win a $1m race with his stable flag-bearer at Royal Randwick on October 26 when the gelding was ruled out of the Five Diamonds Prelude (1500m) virtually at the last minute. Read more in our Hawesbury preview 👇

IT wasn’t a Melbourne Cup, but a connection of sorts with Hawkesbury Race Club Limited trainer Blake Ryan Racing’s first-up victory with a new acquisition at Kembla Grange on Tuesday.

Ryan claimed his fifth winner of the season when well-bred mare Heaven Bound, relishing her new life as an “outdoor girl”, trounced her rivals in the Provincial Benchmark 64 Handicap (1600m).

The four-year-old daughter of five-times Group 1 winner Pierro was purchased by now Hong Kong-based trainer Mark Newnham, whose former apprentice Robbie Dolan won the “big one” at Flemington on $91 bolter Knight’s Choice at his first ride in the Cup. Read more 👇 📸 Bradley_Photos

He has set his sights on winning Illawarra Turf Club’s forthcoming major sprint, the $300,000 The Warra (1000m) – which has just gained Group 3 status – with his talented young sprinter South Of India.

But first things first.

Kris Lees Racing has heeded the advice of Group 1 century maker James McDonald to make an important Big Dance gear change on Tavi Time.

Lees has opted for winkers on the gelding in the $3m Listed 1600m feature at Royal Randwick on Tuesday as he seeks to win the race for a second time.

“James suggested putting winkers on Tavi Time after he won a Benchmark 88 Handicap (1600m) on him at Warwick Farm on October 16,” he explained on Monday morning. Read more 👇 Newcastle Racecourse

BRAD Widdup’s unsuccessful trip to Melbourne wasn’t in vain!

While his first ever Victoria Derby starter Tenbury Wells didn’t “fire” in the $2m feature at Flemington on Saturday, the leading Hawkesbury trainer caught up with an “old mate”.

That was his former stable leading light, the now retired Icebath, who provided him with his maiden Group 1 triumph in the Empire Rose Stakes at the same meeting two years ago.

Widdup visited the now eight-year-old mare at Yulong Farm at Nagambie, about an hour or so outside Melbourne, and was impressed with what he saw.

“Icebath was in terrific order, and her first foal (a filly by resident stallion Alabama Express) is a ripper,” he said. Read more 👇 ://www.provincialracingnsw.com.au/post/widdup-ca

PAUL Perry is hoping “the sky’s the limit” when he attempts to win Tuesday’s $3m Big Dance (1600m) at Royal Randwick.

But the master Newcastle Racecourse trainer will be watching from afar when Sky Lab becomes his first representative in the third running of the annual Melbourne Cup day feature in Sydney.

“I’ll be at Flemington instead but without a runner here,” the internationally successful Perry, who for so many years made a real impact at the Melbourne spring carnival, said on Sunday from the south. Read more 👇 Perry Paul

WHERE there’s a will, there’s a way!

Race Club Limited trainer James Ponsonby’s tough nine-year-old Will To Excel at Wagga on Friday booked himself another ticket to the Jericho Cup meeting at Warrnambool on December 1.

It was the fourth year in a row Will To Excel contested the 3200m “Road to the Jericho Cup Mountaineer Cup” – he has won two and finished third in the other two – and it will also be the fourth time he has appeared at the Jericho Cup meeting, always run on the fourth Sunday after the Melbourne Cup at Flemington. THE “old firm” is back together, boosting Kris Lees Racing's confidence he can end his Melbourne spring carnival drought this year.

The leading Newcastle Racecourse trainer is thrilled to have Hugh Bowman back from Hong Kong – if only briefly – to ride Infancy at Flemington today.

Luckless at three runs so far this campaign, Infancy is part-owned by Lees Racing Pty Ltd and will race in the Australian Bloodstock colours when she tackles her own s*x in the Group 3 Furphy Sprint (1100m). Read more 👇

IF weight of numbers count, a Grange Racecourse trainer will win Saturday’s $500,000 Four Pillars Midway at Rosehill Gardens!

But which one?

The Kembla Grange’s training base’s dominance in the annual 1500m Benchmark 68 Handicap is such that it has 50 per cent of the capacity field; 10 of the 20 runners.

Leading trainers Rob and Luke Prince have three (Victory Lane, Fugitiva and Extreme Freedom), Mitch Beer also has a trio (Apollo Mission, This Is The Moment and Artful Persuasion), and Joe Ible (Patrika Mist), Kerry Parker (Arale), Paul Murray (Winning Point) and Brett Lazzarini (Life Coach) have one each. Twelve months ago Dylan Gibbons won the $500,000 Four Pillars Midway in Sydney, then headed south for his first ride (Okita Soushi) in the Melbourne Cup at Flemington a few days later.

He was in his last year as an apprentice and, by his own standards, the now senior Newcastle Racecourse jockey has had a very quiet start to the new season with only four winners to date – and none of them have been in the city. Read more 👇 📸 Bradley_Photos

It’s fair to say there will be plenty of excitement if iKristen Buchanan KB Racing ’s Shoutaboutit gets the job done on her home track today.

The three-year-old filly is raced by a syndicate of ladies and it’s no surprise they made themselves heard when she was a last start winner at Hawkesbury on October 10.

The $50,000 Magic Millions yearling has been a work in progress for Buchanan, so there was plenty to “shout about” when she broke through at her sixth start over the 1100m. Read more 👇
