The founder (Markus Frind) started the site to improve his resume.

Single handedly built the site from scratch from his small apartment in Vancouver, Canada.

Low operating costs meant he could offer the service for free.

The site faced many obstacles in its earlier years (server crashes, security issues, financial issues). Markus remained persistent.

In 2011 it had over 30 million registered users.
