INTO THE WOODS
11th - 14th September • Warners Bay Theatre

Into the Woods is a musical that intertwines the narratives of several classic The Brother’s Grimm fairy tales, exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests.

The central plot follows a baker and his wife, who are cursed by a witch and must gather magical items to break the spell preventing them from having children. Along their journey, they encounter Cinderella, who wishes to attend the king’s festival; Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk; and Little Red Riding Hood, who wishes for bread to take to her grandmother.

Act one concludes with the characters achieving their initial goals. However, act two delves into the repercussions of their actions, revealing that their “happily ever after” is fraught with unforeseen challenges. The musical delves into themes of desire, morality, the complexity of human relationships, and the sometimes harsh reality behind fairy tale endings, ultimately conveying that wishes come with consequences.

THE WOMAN IN BLACK ARRIVES IN SYDNEY

The most terrifying live theatre experience in the world arrives in Sydney this week. The Woman in Black is playing at the Theatre Royal until 17 August for the final leg of its extremely successful Australian Tour.

The Woman in Black, described by The Guardian as “A Masterpiece” and by the Daily Telegraph (UK) as “The most brilliantly effective spine chiller you will ever encounter”, is the second longest-running play in West End history, after Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap. Susan Hill’s acclaimed ghost story comes dramatically alive in Stephen Mallatratt’s ingenious stage adaptation, a brilliantly successful study in atmosphere, illusion and controlled horror.

This gripping production stars two of Australia’s most acclaimed actors, John Waters and Daniel MacPherson. With a career spanning 50 years, John Waters is well known for lead roles in the film Breaker Morant and the television series Rush, All the Rivers Run, Rake and his 20-year run on Play School.
Daniel MacPherson has conquered film, television and stage roles across the world in a career that has spanned over 25 years. After rising to fame on Neighbours, Daniel spent two years in the UK on the TV series The Bill and starred on stage in Godspell alternating in the roles of Jesus and Judas.

FIRST LOOK: CARRIE THE MUSICAL 🩸🪩

Carrie the Musical is a thrilling stage adaptation of Stephen King’s classic horror novel, “Carrie.” From 22 – 24 August at the Civic Playhouse, experience the haunting story of Carrie White, a shy and troubled high school girl who discovers she has telekinetic powers. Tormented by her peers and oppressed by her fanatically religious mother, Carrie’s quest for acceptance takes a dark turn on prom night, culminating in a catastrophic display of her newfound abilities.

With a score blending haunting melodies and powerful rock anthems, Carrie the Musical explores themes of bullying, vengeance, and the longing for connection. Known for its intense performances, dramatic staging, and iconic blood-drenched scenes, it offers a gripping and emotionally charged experience that confronts the horrors of cruelty and the desire for revenge.

Produced by Hunter Drama and featuring a cast of professional adults and a dynamic group of teenagers, many of whom have performed together for years, Carrie the Musical highlights the pressures teens face to fit in. “The pressure to fit in is intense,” said Rachel. “The need to conform can lead to regrettable behaviour, but when a few brave individuals choose differently, it inspires others to follow. Our cast’s portrayal of these complex characters has sparked ongoing discussions about respect and the impact of our words and actions.”

“The set and staging are pared back to allow the cast and audience to focus on the story,” said Ali. “The willingness of these young actors, alongside our adult cast, to dive into darker material is exciting. It’s satisfying to discuss with the younger generation about who we are as human beings and why we do the things we do. They continually impress us with their emotional maturity.”

CARRIE THE MUSICAL:
22nd - 25th August, 2024

REVIEW: THE ADDAMS FAMILY ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“I’m just like any modern woman trying to have it all: loving husband, a family. It’s just… I wish I had more time to seek out the dark forces and join their hellish crusade.”
– Morticia, ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES

Metropolitan Players have brought the unmistakeably kooky and creepy family unit to the SPCC stage in a production touted as Julie Black’s forty-eighth with the company. Andrew Lippa’s score musicalises the family’s stoic and maudlin philosophy in the face of the scariest, most powerful of things in this world: love.

Wednesday’s in love with Lucas, a gormless boy from a normal family; Gomez and Morticia love each other passionately (obviously); Fester is in love with, um, the moon; and Grandma loves weed and peyote, which makes for a very muddy target audience.

All of this comes to a head at a meet-the-folks dinner party, where it is revealed that Wednesday and Lucas intend to get married, the first secret that Gomez has ever kept from Morticia. Harmless musical numbers service the plot well enough, with the book scenes far more interesting and replete with jokes and gags.

REVIEW: STARWEAVER ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Starweaver, by Jamie Hornsby and Ellen Graham, is unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

Entering the Void at Flinders Drama Centre, the audience is immediately met by a giant curved screen. This is the set and the world of the play, conjuring a world created using Unreal Engine, cutting edge visual effects technology. There’s locations that transform and change on a dime, hallways to run through and empires to topple. There’s motion capture, animation, huge crowds and interstellar travel. It’s staggering that a small independent theatre company has been able to create work of this scale (in collaboration with the visual effects department at Flinders University.)

But none of these technical innovations would matter if the show itself didn’t measure up. Thankfully, Starweaver is an exceptional piece of theatre.

ANNIE RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA

The beloved tale of Annie has been capturing the hearts of theatregoers around the globe for generations. And now the legendary, joyous and inspiring production returns to Australian stages. The ever-popular Broadway musical Annie will light up Sydney’s Capitol Theatre from March next year in an exciting new production directed by Karen Johnson Mortimer and produced by John Frost for Crossroads Live.

Tickets go on pre-sale from 22 July. Waitlist now at anniemusical.com.au to be first in line to purchase tickets.

It’s one of the most awarded and loved musicals of all time. With its iconic score, featuring classics like It’s the Hard-Knock Life, Tomorrow, Easy Street and N.Y.C, Annie is truly a timeless masterpiece, with a book and score written by Tony Award winners Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin.

Annie first toured Australia from 1978 with a cast that included Jill Perryman, Hayes Gordon, Kevin Johnson, Nancye Hayes and Anne Grigg. Annie returned to the Australia stage in 2000 produced by John Frost starring Anthony Warlow, Amanda Muggleton, Jane Scali, Philip Gould and Angela Kelly. For this production, Annie’s lyricist and original Broadway director Martin Charnin wrote a new song for Anthony Warlow to sing in the show, an unprecedented honour for him. A further production toured Australia in 2012, again starring Anthony Warlow alongside Nancye Hayes, Todd McKenney, Chloe Dallimore and Julie Goodwin, which led to Anthony heading to the USA to reprise his role of Daddy Warbucks on Broadway.

A celebration of hope, family and friendship. This small but mighty young girl has returned to stick out her chin and grin once more!

CARRIE THE MUSICAL IS HITTING THE STAGE IN AUGUST

Based on the Stephen King blockbuster novel, Carrie The Musical will be staged by Hunter Drama at the Civic Playhouse. A controversial production with a cult-like status, it was written by Lawrence Cohen who was the screenwriter of the film and features music and lyrics by Academy Award winners Michael Gore (Fame, Terms of Endearment), and Dean Pitchford (Fame, Footloose).

Carrie White is a misfit. At school, she’s an outcast who’s bullied by the popular crowd, and virtually invisible to everyone else. At home, she’s at the mercy of her loving but cruelly over-protective mother. But Carrie’s just discovered she’s got a special power, and if pushed too far, she’s not afraid to use it.

Co-directed by Ali Hodge (Sweet Charity, Wedding Singer) and Rachel Stark (Legally Blonde, Mamma Mia) with a cast of professional adults and emerging stars of Hunter Drama, the title role features Ava Gilbert in her Hunter Drama debut performance. The iconic role of the mother is played by Rachelle Schmidt (Into the Woods, Mary Poppins) who is a multi CONDA award winner.

Dealing with issues around bullying, social isolation, abuse and feminine power, it’s a coming-of-age tale exploring themes of sin, revenge and redemption, with just a hint of melodramatic horror.

“The score is incredible,” said Director, Ali. “The audience can’t help but be moved. Our production explores the depth of what we’re capable of as humans and our ability to change for the better. It’s also about staying true to who you are and what you believe in despite peer pressure. It poses the question – what does it cost to be kind?”

'THE HEART OF ROCK AND ROLL' TO CLOSE IN THE COMING WEEKS

Broadway's The Heart of Rock and Roll will play its final performance at the James Earl Jones Theatre June 23. As of the final performance, the Huey Lewis jukebox musical will have played 24 previews and 72 performances.

Lead producer Hunter Arnold hints at the possibility of a national tour for the title in a statement released with news of the closing. "We were honored to have an amazing cast and crew who brought their immense enthusiasm, commitment, and talent to each and every performance," the statement reads. "With our original cast album just released and talks underway for a national tour and international productions, the musical will continue to delight audiences for years to come."

The musical opened at the Jones April 22, but struggled at the box office and was left empty-handed when 2024 Tony Award nominations were announced shortly after opening.

The show features a book by Jonathan A. Abrams and a score of Huey Lewis hits.
The musical follows Bobby, a Chicagoan whose failed band leads to him returning to corporate America. While working, he meets his boss, Cassandra, who has also traded in her personal life for a professional one. Together, the two realize their dreams when Bobby gets another shot at stardom and Cassandra is up for the CEO job.

THE NEW MUSICAL WILL BOW ON BROADWAY IN 2026

Dolly Parton is headed back to Broadway! The 11-time Grammy winner will bring a biomusical inspired by her life and career to the Main Stem in 2026, with a score that will include both new, original songs penned by Parton and some of her greatest hits. Parton has also collaborated on the musical’s book with Maria S. Schlatter.

And, as for the title? Broadway and Parton fans will be excited to see the country singer-songwriter going meta with this project, which will be called Hello, I’m Dolly, the title of her debut album released in 1967, just three years after Hello, Dolly! debuted on Broadway.

“Hello, I’m Dolly, and I lived my whole life to see this show on stage,” Parton says in a statement. “I’ve written many original songs for the show and included all your favorites in it as well. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll clap, you’ll stomp, it truly is a Grand Ol’ Opera. Pun and fun intended. Don’t miss it!”

Hello, I’m Dolly will be Parton’s second Broadway outing, after penning the original score to 2009’s 9 to 5. The musical was based on the film of the same name, which co-stars Parton and featured her chart-topping hit title song (which also appears in the musical version).

THE 8-TIME TONY AWARD WINNING SHOW IS HEADED WAY DOWN (UNDER)

Seen by three million, streamed by over 350 million and adored by fans all around the world, singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell’s acclaimed West End and Broadway musical phenomenon Hadestown will make its Australian premiere at Theatre Royal Sydney in February 2025.
Presented by Opera Australia and JONES Theatrical Group, Hadestown won eight Tony Awards when it opened on Broadway in 2019, including Best Score and Best Director and is still playing to packed houses five years later.
Originating as Anaïs Mitchell’s indie theatre project, along with her artistic collaborator, Rachel Chavkin, Hadestown was transformed into a genre-defying musical that blends modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz to reimagine the sweeping ancient tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. The hit musical also won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album.

Opera Australia’s Artistic Director Jo Davies feels the time is right to introduce this dynamic production to Australians.
“I’m absolutely thrilled that we’re able to bring this incredible new musical to Australia for the first time, and I’m sure it will be as adored here has it has been overseas, finding a whole new legion of fans. Creator and writer Anaïs Mitchell is just such an amazing talent, I’m very much looking forward to working with her and her team to realise this production here.’ said Ms Davies.

Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, Hadestown delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience and invites you to imagine how the world could be.

Open call auditions for Hadestown roles will be held in Sydney on Saturday 15 June and in Melbourne on Sunday 16 June. For further information and to register interest, please visit https://hadestown.com.au/opencall

Hadestown is supported by the NSW Government, via its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW.

This new solo show under the banner “Dear Diary” will mark her West End debut as she invites fans for a “trip through the spooky corridors of her mind” which will offer an “intimate look at the music, stories, ghosts and monsters that have shaped her life and career” in a night of theatre and indie pop.
