Faeries of Tasmania: Collected sightings from Lady Plummage is reminiscent of Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy book by the amazingly talented Brian Froud (based loosely on the Cottingly Fairy hoax from the early 1900's). Lady Plummage has collected many accounts of Faery sighting in Tasmania, and Terry Whidborne has delightfully bought these these tales to life through his illustrations.

In a gorgeous hardback edition with a decadent ribbon bookmark and dustcover, filled with sketches and whimsical watercolour illustrations it resembles the Gnome books from the 1970's with a tongue in cheek scientific journal-esque feel.

In the warm glow of a spring afternoon, I had my own faery encounter. Only brief, but it changed everything for me. This was not the typical faery one sees depicted in films, all rainbows, wands and glitter. It looked like it belonged here.

Maria Island's European history is one of exploration and dispossession, incarceration and labour, resources and exploitation, entrepreneurship and tourism.

This book is structured around four key touchstones from Maria Island's recent past - the two phases of convict occupation during the Penal Period (1825 - 32) and the Probation Period (1842 - 52), the optimistic tenure of the Bernacchi Period (1884 - 96), and the resource exploitation of the Industrial Period (1920 - 30).

Of course, Maria Island's story stretches both backwards and forwards from these points, stories in which Aboriginals, whalers, farmers and park rangers figure prominently. Yet the landscape that we see today was primarily shaped by these four periods of occupation and it is through them that we can best piece together some of the story of this remarkable island.

After a brutal attack and the breakdown of her marriage, life has taught former TV star Remi Lucan that it's safer to not rely on anyone. Instead, she's buried herself in Hobart, transforming her dilapidated sandstone house back to its former splendour, and it has been her proudest achievement. Better than her short-lived acting career. Definitely better than being a smile-on-command trophy wife. But when she runs out of money, her wealthy ex-husband tries to force the sale of the property and Remi realises her only option is to lower her defences and take in tenants.

At first her biggest problem is adjusting to the intrusion of two unlikely housemates, but when a series of 'accidents' turns ugly, it becomes clear these incidents are more than pranks. Someone is out to get Remi, and they won't stop until they destroy her...

This award is for best novel of the previous year, dedicated to the memory of historian and lover of literature, Vivian Robert de Vaux Voss. Tim's Book of the Week - The Unearthed by Hobart author Lenny Bartulin. Tim will be discussing The Unearthed with Lee on 7AD around 11am on Monday morning.

'Set amongst the harsh terrain of the timber and ore industries of the West Coast of Tasmania, The Unearthed is a haunting novel about the past and its quiet but tenacious grip on the present.'

'A sense of intrigue seeps off the pages - you will love this one.' Tim

More information:
All families have their secrets, and a convict ancestor or an illegitimate birth were shames that families once buried deep. Among the best-hidden stories in Australia's history are those of the convict orphans.

Agnes arrived on a convict transport aged four and was abandoned when her mother needed to escape an abusive husband. After their mother died and their father deserted them, Maria and Eliza Marriner were taken into state care too. Cut off from family, behind the walls of the imposing sandstone buildings of the Queen's Orphan Schools, they were among hundreds of young children entrusted to the much feared Matron Smyth.

At the age of twelve, the children left the orphanage to work without pay on farms and in homes-some of them places where no child should ever have been sent. Although colonists called it white slavery, the authorities turned a blind eye to what was really happening.

These are stories of abuse and abandonment, and also of great generosity and kindness from individuals who rescued and supported children. Some children managed to build happy lives for themselves, but many could not navigate a system stacked against them. There are disturbing parallels between the Queen's Orphan Schools in Hobart and other children's institutions in Australia into the 21st century.

'A beautifully written book detailing the evocative, heartbreaking stories of convict orphans painstakingly pieced together' - Professor Tanya Evans, author of Fractured Families

Now back in print, 'Into the Woods' was the winner of the Victorian and Queensland Premiers awards and short listed for NSW, WA, ABIA newcomer of the year, and Blake Dawson Business Literature awards, and is still incredibly relevant today. Anna Krien went behind the lines amongst the protesters, to document the war between the Police and those who wish to make sure our forests are there for the upcoming generations. An inspiring insight to the debate to save Tasmania's old-growth forests, and the politically inspired decisions based upon corporate greed.
