Advent can remind us not to get too carried away with wish lists and menus and stocking fillers. We know that some of our fellow Australians will not have the joy or abundance that we experience. Here we can be mindful of our spending and indulgence and perhaps we can offer what we can to those agencies who help those who are not as fortunate as we are.

At Christmas time, at any time, the ‘What would Jesus do?’ question – and its answer – are more important than ever.

‘In 1966, Simon and Garfunkel wrote the 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy), famous for the lyrics ‘Slow down, you move too fast, you got to make the morning last.’

If life was considered fast in the 60s, how much faster is the pace of life today? Modern life is lived at a frenetic pace, and it has a way of sneaking up on us in such a way that we can fall into the trap of not questioning it. Often, I can respond to the question ‘How’s life going?’ by saying ‘Busy as always’, thinking somehow that’s an acceptable reply, indicating that I’m fully engaged and living a meaningful life.

I’m grateful for all the reminders and invitations that come about from living in the present moment. To live mindfully and gratefully helps ensure that blessings don’t pass by unnoticed and unappreciated

Advent is a time for walking slowly when others are rushing, for travelling lightly when consumers are burdened with merchandise, for eating less when others are eating more, for focusing inwards when merrymakers drone in noisy carousing.
Preoccupied with gift lists, Christmas cards and party planning, we allow Advent, this quiet season, to become the most frenetic time of the year. Without Advent, it is difficult to find the Christmas Christ. When dazzled by tinsel, we cannot see the star, let alone follow it.

When speeding through the countdown before Christmas Day, we bypass the stable, and when our ears fill with jingles about Frosty and Rudolph, we miss the sweet sounds of the angel’s song.
