Molong Express

Molong Express Newspaper serving Molong, Cumnock, Manildra, Yeoval, Cudal, Orange and Cabonne Shire

The Molong Express was established on 1 October 1876 by Henry Vale Leathem and was originally a free publication. The Leathems continued ownership of the paper until 1933 when they sold the Express to Walter Pollard Stanger. Stanger issued the Express bi-weekly, but reverted to weekly issue from 10 February 1934. Stanger then bought the Argus (a paid rival paper) and incorporated it into the Expre

ss from 7 July 1934. The decade after World War II saw various changes in ownership until the Express was bought on 1 January 1956 by Norman John Bloomfield and his wife Ivy. Norm Bloomfield and his family published the paper until Norm died suddenly in 2005. His family kept the paper going until it was purchased in April 2006 by Paul Mullins formerly of Canberra. Paul and his partner Rozzi, who edits the paper, continue to successfully publish the paper to this day.

Worth Reading ... How did we go in the Albanese Government's Budget handed down by Jim earlier this week?
Thank you to Fed. Member, Andrew Gee MP - for sending the Express this report.

"Thank you to Andrew Gee MP, Independent Federal Member for Calare - who has sent through this media release to the Express outlining the Federal Budget details for where we live in God's Own Country.
Thank you Andrew for keeping the Molong Express informed so that we can keep some of our readers informed.

"MANY BUDGET MISSES FOR THE REGIONS
I thought this year’s federal budget was another mixed bag for the Central West.
On the positive side, the budget is again back in black for the second year, with a further surplus of $9.3 billion.
There were also some positives around cost-of-living measures with a $300 energy rebate, tax cuts, cheaper medicines, and support for students. These measures will help ease some hip pocket pain for residents across our region.
The extension of the Regional Airports Program has assisted a number of our local airports, so I welcome the funding extension of this program, as I do the extension of funding for the Clontarf Foundation to support young Indigenous men in our schools.
Orange Seniors Village Hub Funding Cut
One of the glaring omissions of the Budget was a lack of funding for the Orange Seniors Village Hub which supports hundreds of local seniors in Orange. I was hoping for alternative funding to keep our Village Hub going but it hasn’t been forthcoming. This is a disgrace and a real blow to the seniors of our area.
Great Western Highway Still Owed $1.91 billion
The Budget allocated $116 million to realign and widen the Great Western Highway for approximately 2.4 kilometres and include a new interchange at the Coxs River Road intersection.
By my calculation the Federal Government still owes the Great Western Highway project $1.91 billion that was cruelly snatched away in one of the biggest government money heists in history, so there won’t be too many people turning cartwheels or popping champagne corks over this announcement. Our communities demand nothing less than the full restoration of the $2.03 billion the government shockingly looted from the Great Western Highway last year.
Rural Doctor Shortage Not Addressed
Regional Australia is experiencing a drastic shortage of doctors, and this shortage has not been adequately addressed in the Budget. Increasing bulk billing numbers will not solve this.
While the $47.5 million over four years to expand national and state‐based virtual health services is positive, it’s simply not a substitute for having more doctors in the regions. The rural doctor shortage becomes more acute by the day.
Early Education Shortage Not Addressed
Another glaring omission was the lack of funding for more preschool and childcare/early education places. This shortage also continues to hit country communities hard.
Domestic Violence Funding Must Flow to Regions
I was pleased to see $1 billion put towards crisis and transitional accommodation for women and children fleeing domestic violence. With our nation in a domestic violence crisis, we need to ensure that this funding flows to communities in regional NSW that have significantly higher rates of reported violence than other locations.
Lack of Further Disaster Funding
Unfortunately, further funding for disaster recovery in the Central West has not been delivered. There was no additional funding on top of the $50 million already committed by the federal government for recovery from the 2022 storms and floods. This was also very disappointing.
While the government gets credit on the positives, there’s a lot of missing funding in this Budget that will leave many across our region feeling very let down."

The Express questions

1 ... $1.91 billion still missing from Great Western Highway upgrade. What did the Federal Government do with this promised amount? We should protest.
2 Buy Backs? Forget about it - it will never happen for Central West towns and villages affected by the 2022 November floods. What can we do? Well, the Creeks (Molong, Mandagery etc) are still full of debris and silt waiting for the next flood waters to swamp our towns, villages, farming lands yet again.
Only answer, problem solver, keeps going back to the implementation of a Class Action ... talked about ... but locals are not game enough. Still, it seems like this action for the people by the people - will be the only answer to avoid another tragic flood.
3. Domestic Violence: Government is listening - finally! A reasonable budget allocation that might well help to put the promised front line workers in place as promised .... how many years ago? How will the money be spent. Let's keep an eye on this one.
4. Health - Rural Doctors - etc. etc. Education - etc. etc. Keep onto it Andrew Gee MP. You are the only one listening to the needs of the bush ... and doing something about it. Nationals? Still asleep??

It remains a worrying time in Molong (yes in other towns as well) ...
1) Where is the current consultant's report to the people of Cabonne who remain living in fear of another November 2022 massive tsunami hitting their homes, shops, public assets, community owned assets? Flood mitigation measures? Where are they?
2) Where is the disaster siren spruked by funding back in 2022/2023 so that communities across Cabonne are given notice of impending floodwaters?
3) Molong Creek (one example) continues to fill with even more debris since November 2022 ... silting ... rocks falling from railway line verges to bring further problems to Molong Creek Railway Bridge - and consequences (flooding).
4) Molong Caravan Park? Good steps so far thank you to Cabonne Council ... but caravans keep pulling up most days - travellers who could shop and help local Bank Street business - stay for awhile ... but no - even the security gate installation seems to take forever. No room at the inn sign needed to advise travellers.
5) With all of the goodwill in town for helping flood victims to get up and running again - maybe some of that same goodwill could be extended to the Freemasons Hotel? Like bees to the honey pot some traditions of Molong never fade out - Yes Telegraph Hotel is a great gift to the town ... bright, sunny, well decorated, ... huge $$'s invested by the current owners ... well done. Well done to the locals supporting this new great initiative in town ... but hey! Don't forget the Freemasons Hotel - once the Molong Magpies Rugby Union club's home ... since the 1950's ... frequented by locals, district residents, visitors, property owners ... Kim Stojanov is doing her best ... but could do with the return of tradition. $10 lunches with free tea and coffee - big breakfasts - food at night ... Come on Molong ... let's keep those loyal traditions alive ... support the Freemasons as well as Telegraph Hotel - Magpies ... and Cabonne Council - for heavens sake talk with the building owner to get this iconic corner site in Molong back to its pride and glory.
Molong Express Editor, Rozzi Smith - working for the well-being of ALL TOWN AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS

Thank you to Andrew Gee MP for his tireless work supporting Molong and Cabonne communities who suffered November 2022. Don't know what we would do without this kind man.

Molong Bakery building is looking super ... business opportunity?

How about Freemasons Hotel becoming a community owned enterprise? Cumnock General Store??? Examples of community owned pubs operating right across Australia? Why not Molong?

02/05/2024

Domestic Violence?? Australia's political masters keep talking ... talking AND talking about it. Any thoughts from Express readers about a) where the problem starts b) what are the answers? We're interested to hear your views. Rozzi and Express team
Note: Express is returning - August/September (if not before).

Charge your glasses or coffee mugs 🍻🥂☕in Memory of Paul Mullins, the fearless leader of the Molong Express for the past 25 years.

Please come along and join family, friends and community members for a cuppa, a beer, or glass of bubbly to celebrate the remarkable life of Paul of the Molong Express (aka Reg’s Bench) who passed away peacefully on Friday, 5 April 2024.

WHERE: Freemasons Hotel (“Bottom Pub”), Molong
WHEN: 11am Saturday, 20 April 2024

Followed by a fun, and casual community gathering to celebrate in the way that Paul loved in his adopted town, Molong… and the wider Cabonne community.

What’s happening to the Molong Express? It will be back!!

17/04/2024

My great love, Paul Mullins, owner of the Molong Express for the past 25 years, passed away on Friday 5 April 2024. A beautiful family service was held in Canberra where Paul was born and raised, and worked for most of his life on Monday 15 April 2024. Now it's time for a final farewell and memorial service to celebrate my man's life - Molong Style!! Pauly truly loved Molong, what he called "my little paper" (the Molong Express) - his cottage (Railway Gatekeeper's Cottage), this town and every other across Cabonne Country, and the Molong community and those across Cabonne.
Paul was an inspirational leader, a great thinker, and held the most brilliant mind. He was a masterful writer, with humour that could bring real belly laughs to large or small gatherings.
Since the November 2022 flood hit our cottage, business, the town he loved and others across Cabonne - Paul's health went downhill. Being caught up in our cottage with water up to our necks has taken not only Paul's life - but mine and many others. None of us have enjoyed the same lives, focus, health as we did before November 2022. This is the part governments and local councils have no idea of i.e. human trauma and suffering of their people from creeks, streams, surface water flow, where decades of locals have suffered - where generations of residents have suffered. Yet, our creeks, rivers, streams, surface water problems go by and our communities, our residents, have learnt to say nothing. Shelf copies of flood reports and mitigation ideas have stood still, enclosed in glossy covers put together by expensive consultants - waiting for the day state government $$'s may be granted to fix the problems and comply with their (and Councils) duty of care to their residents. And, yet as communities - we say nothing that will change the pace of controlling the damage of floodwaters. Today, we live with yet another promise via yet another consultant's flood report and mitigation ideas coming our way. What will change? I'm betting on 'nothing'. Cabonne Council alone, will never have the money, resources, time to fix what has become a mountainous problem. NSW State Government? The Premier and local members understand the problem as it exists here and right across NSW - Question is priority funding and $$'s are in short supply ... so we look at what Federal Government can do. Then of course we have three levels of governance and red tape to come together and figure out the problem i.e. Federal, State and Local Government. Let's not, as a community, give up the fight to ensure the safety of this wonderful town (and surrounding towns and villages) we call home. More later.
When will the Express be back? We'll be back in circulation by the spring ... new, new look, new features, all in memory and dedication to our wonderful boss and leader, Paul Mullins.
Regards to all ... Rozzi (People Power, never, ever give up the good fight). xx
