Everybody loves a good story...

And even better when it’s a real story, and not fiction. For me, photography is about capturing that visual narrative which invites the viewer to engage in a moment caught in time. My first glimpse of Venice was in 1984 when Madonna released her Like A Virgin video, which was largely shot in Venice. It was the first time I’d learned about the canals and the gondolas and the many bridges (you see Madonna prancing all around it!) A few years later, my 6th Grade English teacher introduced us to Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, presenting me with a very different version of Venice from Madonna’s! It’s been a place I’ve always wanted to visit but so many people say how packed and touristy it is. Yesterday, I finally arrived into Venice on a boat from Rovinj, which apparently is how all important people arrive here. Yes, it’s packed and it’s a little touristy and it was hot and humid. But my god, it is also dreamy and mystical and full of surprises in every little turn among the labyrinth of paths and alleyways…

Underground music… it’s been a couple of months since I caught the L to work and I certainly wasn’t missing the crowds and concoctions of smells that permeate the platforms. But now and again, you stumble upon a busker peddling their talents to anyone who would listen and maybe part with a bit of change. Yesterday, this genius of a classical guitarist filled the almost empty platform at the Washington Blue line stop with the most beautiful sound. No one around was talking, and arched ceilings of the platform provided the perfect acoustics for this raw, divine talent. I was grateful to have my day start with such beauty.

This is my third Thanksgiving (ever!) and what a privilege to host my in-laws so I thought I’d make some Aussie favourites of spinach ricotta rolls and sausage rolls for pre-dinner snacks. They went down a treat! Thanks Nagi for the wonderful full-proof recipes!

Growing up in a Pentecostal-evangelical church, there was a thing we did during our worship services called “singing in the spirit” or “spontaneous worship.” This is often at the end of a song when the formal singing had ended but the musicians would keep playing a 3-4 chord progression and we would all break into spontaneous melodies with our voices, sometimes with words or just lalalas… It’s probably close to 2 decades since I was last in such a church service and had forgotten how wonderful that sound was. Last night, Ben Abraham @benbenabraham brought what was once just an experience of my past, into the present when he introduced this to his song Requiem. It was amazing to see the crowd just go along with it and it was pretty special… thanks Ben for taking me back to that special place.
