One of the best resources we have for the study of history is the National Library's on-line TROVE service and in particular the newspaper archive.

Trove was launched in December 2009, by the National Library of Australia staff, as a way to aggregate collections.

In early 2023, it was announced that the current funding arrangements would cease in July 2023 leading to the closure of Trove, unless further federal funding became available.

It becomes necessary to agitate to assure the current government that Trove is valuable to Australian citizens.

Between 1200hrs 31/8 and 1200hrs 3/9/2020 Lilydale Historical Society and RSL noticed that historical plague attached to the memorial tree in Melba Park had been stolen. The plaque is made of brass and has been attached to the tree since 13 June 1900. It was a gift to the people of Lilydale. If you know anything please call Lilydale on 97392300 or Crime Stoppers on 1300 333 000.

We have some terrible news!
120 years ago the people of Lilydale commemorated the relief of Mafeking in the Boer War by planting an oak tree and placing a plaque on the iron guard around it.
Going up in 1900 it is the oldest war memorial in the district and one of the oldest in Victoria.
For 120 years it has sat there and been admired by generations of residents.
Sadly some scumbags have now stolen it!
This is a disgrace and a severe loss to the history and heritage of the Yarra Ranges!!
Please keep an eye out for it and if you hear anything about who has stolen it - report these low lives to the police straight away!

During the centenary of World War I, the federal electorate of Casey — named after a World War I veteran, Lord Richard Casey — was one of the most proactive electorates in the country in what they did to commemorate the 100 year anniversaries.

Mark down the weekend of May 10th-12th to commemorate the centenary of the return home to Seville of George Ingram VC, MM (the Yarra Valley's only Victoria Cross recipient).

Included will be the unveiling of a plaque in the Seville Hall and the long awaited unveiling of the extraordinary George Ingram glass panel on the new Seville War Memorial.

Don't miss this opportunity to pay our respects to a local war hero.

NEW WEBSITE
A day by day account of what happened to the local volunteers in WW1.

In 2018, after receiving a grant from the Federal Government’s Centenary of Armistice program, the Lilydale RSL commissioned local military historian Anthony McAleer OAM, to create a project that would highlight the service of this district’s men and women during World War One.
What he has created is quite unique.

Never before has a district like the former Shire of Lillydale had its Great War volunteers chronicled in this way.
At this website you will find a day by day account of what happened to them all and the important events that effected them.

It details things like the moments they enlisted, when they sailed, the brave deeds they performed to receive awards, when they were wounded or hospitalised and tragically, when and how they died while on active service.
We know that the individual stories here will be of immense value to family historians, military researchers and those interested in local events.

Hi All,

Friday October 5th this year mark the centenary of the events in World War One which led to Seville's George Ingram being awarded the Victoria Cross, the last Australia VC of the war and the only VC recipient from the Yarra Valley.

As a result a service will be held in Seville at 11.00am on that day (see attached flyer) to commemorate this event.
We will also be breaking the ground (turning the first sod) for the new Seville War Memorial, a major part of which is a tribute to George Ingram VC, MM.

Special guests will be there on the day.

Feel free to SHARE this flyer on your page for anyone you think would be interested.

Regards,

Anthony McAleer OAM

Hi All,

WE NEED YOUR HELP

For the past five years I have been working with the Seville community to create a war memorial for them, even though that township lost 17 men in two World Wars - it has never had its own war memorial.

The project is currently up for funding to complete the project - the final stage being its construction.

Please, take a couple of minutes now, go to the 'Pick My Project' website (see link below) - register - and vote for the Seville War Memorial.

Then could you please encourage your facebook friends in the outer east to do the same.

This memorial will be amazing - it will be made of laminated glass, stand four metres high and will be a public work of art.

It pays tribute to the Seville men and women who served, suffered and died for our nation and carry images and stories of them. It is also a memorial to the Yarra Valley's only Victoria Cross recipient, Capt George Ingram VC, MM.
