The CBF is delighted to welcome the Albanese Government’s announcement of additional funding support for community broadcasting.

Recognising that local media and community broadcasting is critical to the health of our democracy, social cohesion and informing communities, the announcement includes:

- An additional $15 million over three years to support the community broadcasting sector, distributed by the CBF

- An additional $12 million over three years to support First Nations broadcasting and media, distributed by the National Indigenous Australians Agency

Our CEO Jo Curtin welcomed the announcement:

“The new $15 million in funding that the CBF will distribute is a welcome much-needed immediate relief to our highly oversubscribed grants programs while the Government continues work with the sector on the Community Broadcasting Sector Sustainability Review.

“We look forward to allocating these funds out to community at the earliest opportunity – with most funds anticipated to be allocated through our first grant round of 2025/26, opening for application on 13 January 2025."

Along with many other community radio stations in the same boat, the flow-on effects of volunteer shortages and diminishing capacity has had rippling impacts on small stations like 3BBR 103.1FM. But in its latest move, the station’s Regional News Team has discovered ways to bring more volunteers onboard while catering for some of the unique circumstances of its listeners.

3BBR West Gippsland Community Radio Inc is a recipient of CBF’s Round 1 Specialist Radio Programming Grant 2023/24.

Wild Horse FM 997 Community Radio celebrated its 20th birthday this year in August. In the face of today’s economic challenges and volunteers increasingly at capacity, the station has been drawing on the strength of its wellbeing-focused initiatives to deepen engagement with local communities and stakeholders.

This year’s highlights include the Yarraman Festival, where the station teamed up with the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Users Association Inc to host the annual event - garnering strong support from local businesses and sponsors such as Bendigo Bank.

‘The regional economic climate remains challenging, but we’ve laid the ground for future sponsorships through relationship building’ shares Station Treasurer Jane Hodgkinson.

The Federal Government has recently announced $15 million in urgent funding for regional and community news.

Opening in November, the News Media Relief Program will provide grant funding to eligible news publishers creating news content. The program forms part of the government’s broader objectives under the News Media Assistance Program to safeguard the sustainability of Australia’s media diversity in the face of changing readership habits, increasing costs and declining advertising revenue.

‘We want to see more local journalists and publishers reporting on the issues that matter to their communities,' states Minister for Communications Michelle Rowland MP. News publications eligiblefor funding will include publications in a regional or suburban location, and publications providing news to First Nations or CALD audiences.

Race Matters on FBi Radio has become not only a vital program in the FBi Radio and community broadcasting landscape, but a space for innovation, community-building and gathering.

Taking home this year’s Amy Large Inner West Council Volunteer Award, the show has skyrocketed from two hosts to an orbit of 30 contributors in the last 12 months - a move that has enabled it to foster more meaningful relationships with emerging audio makers and guests, and to continue focusing on those who have been systematically underserved.
