Mine was an Incy Wincy spider book, with a furry black spider puppet. I’m extremely afraid of spiders, so I have no idea why this one stuck with me! Even repurchased it for my son to have in his book collection!

Some of you may not know this, but when I’m not being a mum or author, I’m actually a full-time teacher! I’ve been working in schools for over 10 years.

This year is my first time teaching Prep/Grade 1, and I’ll admit—I was nervous. I thought, How on earth do I teach a child the alphabet and how to write?

We’ve been working incredibly hard on our sounding-out skills in class. This piece of work is from a Prep student who, at the beginning of the year, only recognised six letters of the alphabet and would cry when asked to draw a picture.

This is why getting a sample print is so important—not just to check paper quality and colour, but also to see the illustrations with a fresh set of eyes. Even after looking at this multiple times, it still took a work colleague to point something out.

I couldn’t help myself this morning—I had to snap a quick photo after dropping my son off. My son’s childcare has a copy of Mabel’s Magical Meal displayed in the front seating area.

The manager told me there are a handful of kids who always stop by to read it before heading out the door. I’m continually blown away by the support my son’s childcare gives me.

Remember, if you have any photos of Mabel’s Magical Meal, I’d love to see them!
