Humour = Conversions?
Stats are showing it’s time for brands to consider cracking a joke (or two) on socials.
Recently released stats from show that 30% of users said humour in creator content was a top motivation for purchase intent. And - 7 in 10 viewers say "making people laugh" is considered the most enjoyable aspect of watching TikTok ads.
That being said, there’s nothing worse than brands jumping on a bandwagon and forcing a trend or humour where it doesn’t fit. Authenticity in tone of voice is important. So brands - it’s time to get funny - in a way that’s true to your brand and ethos. For products and services where humour perhaps doesn’t come naturally, a great entry point is through working with creators to inject some quirk and fun on your behalf.
Who are your favourite funny brands to follow on social media?

2023 Social Media Trend Predictions
We have to admit, we love checking out all of the posts, blogs, articles, Reels and Tik Toks about 2023 predictions. That being said, when it comes to social media, forget trying to forecast the next 12 months. Our crazy industry changes so quickly, that you can bet that what’s in style now, while be so-out-of-fashion come the middle of the year. Anyone who thinks they can predict the social media landscape of December 2023 doesn’t really work in social media.
So let’s just start with Q1 2023. We’re focusing on brand authenticity, socially led copy, video video video, eye catching stills in carousels, fun graphics that engage and of course, trending content.
What’s on your content radar for the start of the year?

We welcomed most of our team back in to the office last week, joining our skeleton staff who have been holding down the fort over the festive season. It’s wonderful having everyone back in the office and the vibe is exciting.
2023 is set to be a year of growth, both for us as a business and as individuals.
I (Shelley) shared the following Q1 points of focus with our team on Slack on Monday. These were…
* To check in with me for a one on one every month
* To ask about upskilling opportunities
* To use the monthly wellness allowance (at MSC we pay for our staff to undertake wellness activities monthly)
* To schedule a coffee with a mentor in our team once a month
* To assess your in person and video meetings - could these be more productive as a quick phone call?
* To get outside during your lunch break
* To practice mindfulness - we have a wonderful client, Smiling Mind and are excited to work through their Small Business Mindfulness app in Q1
* To identify opportunities to generate new business for the agency
What’s on your team to-do in Q1?
- Shelley

Sure, glossy photos and videos are great (nobody loves a beautiful product shot more than we do) but when it comes to appealing to Gen Z, we know that UGC is the way to cut through in 2023.
When it comes to the hotel industry? Showcasing properties in an authentic way is a great way to balance out the slick, stylised imagery and video of the hotel.
Our team have been busy creating UGC for our roster of hotel clients, and are seeing some great results. Here’s a Reel we created on a recent trip to Hotel Kurrajong Canberra for TFE Hotels.

Every social media strategy in 2023 needs a pillar dedicated to trending content.
While every business’ approach will vary, an awareness of trends and ability to adapt quickly to platform changes is so important in todays’ landscape.
Some key tips to nailing trending content are:
💙 Make sure you’re staying on top of what’s trending every week. (If you subscribe to our Social Media Trend Report, this will magically land in your inbox weekly - no scrolling required! Sign up link below.
💙 Identify when trends are relevant to your business. Some trends will work for your brand and your objectives, and some wont! There’s no need to try to jump on every trend that emerges - be selective and utilise trends that work best with your authentic tone of voice
💙 Act on trends quickly. There’s no time for a 4 week approval process here - if you’re not acting on a trend within 48 hours, you’re too late
💙 Create and edit your content within platform where you can. Stats are suggesting that native content created within app outperforms content designed and edited elsewhere
💙 Remember that trending content doesn’t need to be perfect. While it can be challenging for brands to move away from slick, professionally designed content that has been through months of revisions and approvals, we know that the audience today is craving authenticity. Not every piece of content you share needs to be perfect - it just needs to create positive sentiment with your audience

Meet Melbourne Social Co’s Director Shelley
Melbourne-based creative Shelley Friesen, is the Director of Melbourne Social Co and sister brand The Social Co Academy, and makes no excuses for being a digital geek – in fact, she’s proud of it.
With a traditional fashion editorial background, Shelley began forging a career in social media over ten years ago – long before her contemporaries knew their MySpace from their My Little Ponies!
While pursuing IT wasn’t a stylish choice for a child of the 80’s, Shelley’s intuition to pursue social media was bang on (much like Olivia Newton John’s leotard in Let’s Get Physical!)
Now leading a team of fifteen, most of whom can’t remember a world without selfies and Snapchat, Shelley has been instrumental in building the digital presence of some of Australia’s biggest brands.
