SYN Where Young People Run The Show

SYN is a youth-run community media organisation run by young people for young people, providing broadcast and training opportunities for young Australians, and empowering them through media making. We believe young people should be the creators, not just consumers of media and advocates for their own experiences on decisions that impact them. Our Values:

・Opportunity: SYN creates opportunities fo

r all young people with various lived experiences to participate in its community.

・Inclusivity: SYN works to build a culture and community for young people of all different backgrounds to participate.

・Independence: SYN is an independently run and funded media organisation, where young people can make content that is relevant to them.

・Participation: Young people run SYN — our media creation, our training, our governance and our leadership.

・Innovation: SYN gives the space for young people to drive creativity, take risks and learn. SYN Media acknowledges and pays respect to the people of the Woi wurrung and Boon wurrung language groups of the eastern Kulin Nations on whose unceded Lands the SYN office and studios stand. SYN Media also acknowledges the Traditional Custodians and their Ancestors of the Lands and Waters across Australia where our content reaches and on which SYN partner organisations stand. Join emerging curators Audrey Merton and Sen Vanderzalm for a live episode of Art Smitten, SYN Media’s flagship radio show focusing on arts and culture amidst the Melbourne Art Book Fair in the NGV Great Hall.

For this session, Audrey and Sen turn their attention to arts and publishing, diving into the history of art manifestos and the impact of DIY publishing as acts of resistance. The pair will also host an interview with the people behind Betweenia Project 夾洲計劃, who bring not just art books but also experiences of mutual aid and situated practices from China to Australia. 💫 These school holidays, we’re amplifying the next generation of radio makers! 💫

Ever wondered what it’s like to host a live radio show with your mates? Now you can!

We’re inviting young people, aged 12-15 years, to Amplify, SYN’s live radio sessions this April. You’ll learn what it takes to prepare a radio show, but most importantly, you’ll get on the mic and co-host your own show, live on SYN 90.7fm.

And best of all—you’ll have a one–year membership with SYN, and the opportunity to co-host a fortnightly show for under-18s for the rest of the year!

No radio experience is necessary. Tell your folks, and get your friends together for your chance to be SYN’s next radio star.

SYN FM does not believe January 26th is a day for celebration.

We stand in solidarity with the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander community, and we support the ongoing push for recognition and reconciliation.

SYN FM operates on the stolen land of the Woi Wurrung and Boon Wurrung language groups of the Eastern Kulin nations, and we respectfully acknowledge their ancestors past and present. Sovereignty has never been ceded, and no treaty has been signed.

We encourage our listeners and community to show their support by tuning in and turning out to the following:

Melbourne Invasion Day Protest, Naarm, Wurundjeri Land - Victorian Parliament House steps from 10AM.

3CR Invasion Day broadcast - From 8:30AM to 4PM, 3CR will be live with their annual Invasion Day broadcast, including live coverage of the Invasion Day rally, truth-telling, voices of elders and yarns with grassroots activists.

3KND (1503AM / 3KNDDigital) - Melbourne’s first Indigenous owned and managed AM station.

Share The Spirit - A celebration of survival and a showcase of diverse First Nations music, arts and culture. On from 11:30AM-9PM at Sidney Myer Music Bowl, and live on Triple R from midday.

SAVE SYN FEST ON FILM 📸

Woweeeeeee what a massive day that was! Save SYN Fest was a volunteer-led mini music festival held at - organised as the final sprint to save our station (which, it did!) 👏

We want to give the biggest thank you to all of the volunteers who contributed their time to planning and hosting the event, the artists and DJs who slayed the stage, all gig-goers from our community for coming by and donating throughout the day, our raffle prize donors, and Nick, John and The Evelyn Hotel team for hosting us. The dedication and kindness of you all were crucial to the success of this event, and of the emergency fundraiser.

Our hearts are bursting with gratitude ❤️‍🔥

Since our beginning, SYN FM has always been a stalwart defender of The New; new voices, new stories, and new art. Following in this tradition, we bring you 10 albums which we believe to have exemplified the best in new music for the year. All 10 are exemplary works of art exploring new facets of their respective genres with remarkable prowess.

To hear a full breakdown of why we chose these albums, tune in this New Year’s Eve from 1pm-4pm as our General Manager Ruby Smith breaks down the best music of 2023.

We’d like to also take this opportunity to once again thank the many supporters of the station who showed up for us in an incredible way this year. Thanks to our incredible community, SYN FM is here to stay!
