I just dyno tuned this spectacular 1956 Chevy Belair at PowerHouse Engines, with its resto nearly completion, including its 383 SBC proudly built by John Pilla here a few years back. Its been patiently awaiting its fire up in the car and made 347hp at the tyres through a high stall. It made 457hp/481ftlb on our engine dyno back in 2016. A perfect all rounder in this car. It’s very torquey and responsive on the road with loads of midrange grunt. The restoration is a credit to Rod the owner and his meticulous attention to detail. Its a beautiful machine.

"Big Daddy" Don Garlits!

A legendary figure in drag racing, widely regarded as the "father of modern drag racing." Born on January 14, 1932, in Tampa, Florida, Garlits revolutionized the sport with innovations that improved both performance and safety. His career began in the 1950s, driving his iconic series of "Swamp Rat" dragsters.

One of his most significant contributions came after a 1970 accident, when an engine explosion severed part of his foot. This incident led Garlits to develop the rear-engine dragster, a design that moved the driver before the engine to enhance safety. This design became the standard in drag racing and remains in use today.

Throughout his career, Garlits won numerous championships, including 17 NHRA national titles, and became the first to break several speed records, such as reaching 200 mph in the quarter mile. He retired from competitive racing in 2003 but remains active as a mentor, museum curator, and ambassador for the sport. His Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing, located in Ocala, Florida, preserves the history of drag racing and his own legacy.

Gotta love a big engine!
This formidable looking 454 Big Block Chevy is on the dyno and ready to go for yours truly to run through its paces here at PowerHouse Engines.
The customer has had this one sitting in storage for quite a few years, built elsewhere and yet to hit the road since. We’ll be giving it a once over and optimise the tune before it’s slotted into a HQ Holden resto nearing completion.

The Michigan Madman!

E.J. Potter, famously known as the "Michigan Madman," was a legendary motorcycle daredevil and mechanical genius. Born in Ithaca, Michigan, Potter earned his nickname for building and riding drag bikes powered by V8 car engines in the 1960s and '70s. His most famous creation was the "Widowmaker," a series of motorcycles fitted with 350- and 454-cubic-inch Chevy V8 engines, designed purely for speed. These bikes, devoid of clutches or transmissions, were controlled by nothing but Potter's nerve and the throttle.

Potter set numerous drag racing records, becoming famous for his outrageous stunts and fearless riding style. His death-defying runs, some clocking over 170 mph, cemented his place as a motorsports legend. E.J. Potter was a symbol of American ingenuity, pushing the limits of both machines and the human spirit.

My Dads old RX3, currently on display at the National Motor Racing Museum in Bathurst, back to life again in its 1981 Australian Touring Car Championship livery, exactly how he raced it in the day. Lloyd Williams the current owner has done an incredible job on the restoration, working tirelessly over the last 3.5 years completing most of the restoration tasks himself. He also plans to hit track in the current Group C historic category, which will be awesome for RX3 fans to see.

After Dad sold it back in the day it passed through several hands and category transformations, so to see it survive and back in full Group C spec with Dads livery is incredible. The last time I sat in this car I was only 10 years old, but all the memories are still with me like it was yesterday. They were exciting times for our family and particularly my Dad who was a hard working battler who had just started out in business with his own shop (G&D Performance) and put everything on the line, borrowing money to buy the car to fulfill his dreams of racing in Australia’s premier Motorsport category after cutting his teeth in racing quite successfully at club level since the mid 70s. I only wish Dad was still here to see it. He would be so honoured and proud to see it back. Thank you Lloyd Williams for bringing this car and our memories back to life. I can’t wait to see it in the flesh again.

A bit of maintenance on the XY today. 😁
It’s been running a higher engine temp than normal lately in warmer weather.
Pulled the radiator and found out it was 30% blocked in the core with a tank off clean out.
All fixed now and ready to go again!

Legendary!

Chrysler Australia’s iconic 265 Hemi Six Pack. With the E49 Valiant Charger punching out a super stout 302 Hp and an impressive 14.4 sec quarter mile, they certainly were a stout combo.

The ‘glowing headers’ image would have to rate amongst the most epic visuals used in Australian automotive marketing history to date.

What an era it was!

A sweet Chrysler 225 Slant Six build I recently ran on the engine dyno @ PowerHouse after a complete build, to be installed into the owners beautiful VC Valiant ute.
This gentleman is in his 80’s and wanted a nice all round engine combo that’s not too wild but still packs a decent punch. This example built by PowerHouse has been blueprinted, balanced, stock cylinder head as cast (no porting) with a few tweaks, performance valve seats, increased compression ratio, mild camshaft, Aussie Speed intake, 450cfm Quickfuel Slayer carb and ICE ignition. A solid result on the dyno saw 190hp & 240ftlb torque and it purrs like a kitten.

The Legendary 426 Hemi!

Also known as the "Elephant Engine," was first introduced by Chrysler in 1964. It was specifically designed for use in NASCAR racing and quickly gained a reputation for its incredible power and performance on the track. The engine featured a hemispherical combustion chamber design, which allowed for better airflow and efficiency, delivering unrivalled power production and performance.

The 426 Hemi engine was a favorite among drag racers and dominated the drag racing scene in the 1960s, 1970s and beyond. Its success on the track led to its popularity among muscle car enthusiasts, and it was offered as an option in several Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth vehicles, including the Dodge Charger and Plymouth Barracuda.

Despite its success, the high cost of production and tightening emissions regulations led to the discontinuation of the 426 Hemi engine in 1971.

Today, the 426 Hemi engine remains a legendary piece of automotive history and is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts for its power and performance capabilities.

I recently ran a very healthy 355 Holden build completed at PowerHouse on the engine dyno. It’s going into a spectacular early Commodore resto and punched out a cool 490 hp & 444 ftlb with user friendliness and street practicality being the primary goal.

Whilst PowerHouse build all engine types and brands, we’re quite fond of the iconic Aussie Holden V8.

I recently had the pleasure of dyno tuning another sweet little 32 Ford at PowerHouse Engines! We’ve had a few rods in lately! This example sports a nice little 347 Windsor that arrived with major carburettor issues causing flooding, hard start and terrible drivability issues. After a good once over with required repairs and optimising the entire tune it now runs like a dream and produces approximately 330 -340hp at the engine.
