Penrhyn's World War II airstrip. In 1942, 1,000 United States servicemen began constructing a 10,000 ft airstrip. The airstrip was used by the American military until 1946. The island was not directly attacked, but was used to transport men and materials.

DARK DAYS AHEAD ON PENRHYN

Penrhyn/Tongareva is one of the most remote and rarely visited of the Cook Islands but next year the world will know about it when it becomes the first place on earth to see an eclipse of the sun.

This eclipse will capture international attention because it will be visible across a huge area of the United States. But it all starts just north of Penrhyn where the sun will be blocked out when the moon passes in front of it.

It’s one of nature’s most awe-inspiring events and as the land is blanketed in a strange greyish light, animals become quiet and prepare for sleep, while their nocturnal counterparts get ready to come out. It won’t quite be a total eclipse on Penrhyn but as near as; 98.5% of the sun will be hidden from view for 4 minutes 28 seconds on 8 April, 2024.

The Islands have had the rare fortune to be in the narrow path of two previous total eclipses in the past 58 years – on Manuae in 1965 and Mangaia in 2010. But if you miss this one, you’ll have live a very long time because the next total eclipse visible in the Cook Islands isn’t until August, 2176!
