Today from 9am on Triple R - 3RRR 102.7FM! Regular guests Dr Emma Shortis and Professor Chris Wallace join Amy for the end of year politics wrap for 2024, which includes US and Australian politics, among other world events.

Amy’s first ever interview for Uncommon Sense was with Peter Wohlleben about his debut book, The Hidden Life of Trees. To celebrate 8 years of episodes, you’ll hear Amy’s interview with German forester, conservationist, and best-selling author Peter Wohlleben discussing his most recent book, The Power of Trees: How Ancient Forests Can Save Us If We Let Them.

Amy and Peter delve into a wide-range of themes. He reveals how together trees can create their own climate and weather systems, how trees communicate with birds and insects to protect themselves, the fascinating ways trees respond in situations of unexpected drought, the intricate and unexpected relationship dynamics between fungi, bacteria, and trees, and why ancient or old growth trees will play a key role in combatting climate change. Peter Wohlleben discusses these topics and much more.

Tune in from 9am on Tuesday - Triple R - 3RRR! Zambian-born filmmaker, historian and author Santilla Chingaipe joins the show to discuss her new book, Black Convicts: How Slavery Shaped Australia. Santilla's work explores settler colonialism, slavery, and contemporary migration in Australia and uncovers the lives whitewashed out of our history. On the First Fleet of 1788, at least 15 convicts were of African descent. By 1840 the number had risen to almost 500. She will share their stories with us and how it challenges the ways we think about ourselves today. Santilla will be launching her book at Sovereign Hill in Ballarat on 29 November. The award-winning documentary inspired by her book, Our African Roots, is streaming on SBS On Demand.

Architecture and design writer Heidi Dokulil sits down to talk about her award-winning book, Sydney Brutalism, which details an architectural revolution in Sydney from the late 1950s and for the next 30 years. It led to some of the world’s best examples of brutalist architecture; Sirius, the Sydney Masonic Centre, UTS Tower, and the ribbed concrete shells of the Sydney Opera House. Heidi will talk about the aesthetic and design features of brutalism and how they continue to inspire great architecture today. Heidi is the co-founder of Good Habitat and the Australian Design Unit.

Plus the ANU's Associate Professor Matthew Sussex returns to talk about Russia's war on Ukraine after the deadly conflict recently reached the 1000 day mark. With Russia gaining momentum over Ukraine, and uncertainty over ongoing military support and monetary aid from the United States of America, how will the war progress over the next few months during the European winter? Will other European countries step up their efforts to supply Ukraine with armaments? What has been the effect of Russia allegedly sending air defence missiles and other military technology to North Korea in return for the deployment of troops from the North? Dr Matthew Sussex is a Visiting Fellow at the ANU Coral Bell School for Asia Pacific Affairs and the ANU Strategic and Defence Studies Centre. https://www.rrr.org.au/explore/programs/uncommon-sense/episodes/31680-uncommon-sense-26-november-2024

Tune in from 9am til noon on Triple R - 3RRR 102.7FM! Professor Kate Fitz-Gibbon explains why violence against women and children is not a series of isolated incidents but a pervasive, systemic issue – and a national crisis that needs a commensurate whole of government and community response. This is outlined in her essay for Monash University Publishing; ‘Our National Crisis: Violence Against Women and Children.’ Kate is an internationally recognised expert in domestic and family violence, femicide, perpetrator interventions, and the impacts of policy and practice reform in Australia and internationally. She is a Professor (Practice) with the Faculty of Business and Economics at Monash Uni, and an Honorary Professorial Fellow with the Melbourne Law School. In 2024, Kate founded Sequre Consulting, which is committed to advancing safety and equality.

Cultural archaeologist and author Sean Reynolds () returns to discuss his debut book, Melbourne Ghost Signs (Scribe Publications). It’s a beguiling and beautifully nostalgic photographic collection of the faded signs and half-hidden logos of Melbourne, revealing the historic tales — big and small — of this ever-changing city. Sean originally hails from Illinois, USA. He moved to Melbourne in 2015 and now works for the Royal Historical Society of Victoria.

Plus, Dr Amanda Laugesen, historian, lexicographer and Director of the Australian National Dictionary Centre and brings us an innovative linguistic history of Australia, in ‘Australia in 100 Words’. With words that tell the story of our nation – from indigenous words like minmi, diprotodon, and tjukurpa to “Australianisms” like mateship, fair dinkum, and bogan to drop bears, budgie smugglers, bin chickens, bonzer, arvo, tucker, sickie, pash, and Illywhacker. Amanda is also chief editor of the Australian National Dictionary: Australian words and their origins. Her most recent book is Rooted: An Australian history of bad language (2020).

Tune in on Tuesday from 9am on Triple R - 3RRR 102.7FM! Sebastian Smee, Australian-born Pulitzer Prize-winning art writer and art critic for The Washington Post, joins Amy to discuss in-depth his latest book, ‘Paris in Ruins: Love, War and the Birth of Impressionism’ (Text Publishing). Sebastian examines how the art movement so many have come to love – impressionism – emerged from the violence of the Siege of Paris and the Paris Commune, a particularly tumultuous time of political and social upheaval in Paris between 1870-71, called “The Terrible Year.” He pays close attention to the intertwining lives of the so-called “father of impressionism” Édouard Manet, and Berthe Morisot – the leading female painter of the impressionist movement since its inception.

Dr Tyne Daile Sumner talks about an exhibition on at Melbourne’s new National Communication Museum, Instruments of Surveillance (open until 2 March 2025), and the exhibition’s panel event and publication launch this week. Tyne is the exhibition collaborator and publication editor for Instruments of Surveillance – an exhibition which unravels the interface between human and machine, inviting audiences to unpack the technologies that people use to surveil and their role in it.

Professor Chris Wallace from the University of Canberra talks about the US Presidential election results and the latest in Australian politics, including the federal Labor government’s plan to ban under 16’s from using social media.

Tune in from 9am on Tuesday - Triple R - 3RRR: Amy returns to the airwaves. With the US Presidential Election campaign heating up, and with just a week until voters go to the polls, Dr Emma Shortis joins Amy for a comprehensive analysis of the campaign so far and what we might expect from the two key candidates in the final days – the Democratic nominee Vice-President Kamala Harris and Republican nominee and former President Donald J. Trump. Independent and third-party Cornel West, Jill Stein, Chase Oliver, and Claudia de la Cruz are also contesting the election. Who is the frontrunner, what do the candidates stand for, and what are the consequences of a Harris or Trump presidency for the world, and close allies like Australia?
Filmmaker Madeleine Hetherton-Miau joins the show to discuss her new documentary, Mozart's Sister (Sharmill Films). For the first 16 years of her life, Mozart’s sister shared equal billing with her brother. Musical partners and collaborators, Wolfgang Mozart and Maria-Anna Mozart played the harpsichord and fortepiano together before Kings and Queens, including King Louis XV of France and Mme de Pompadour, and were the talk of Europe. Praised by her brother for her original musical compositions, Mozart wrote in a letter in 1770, “My dear sister! I am in awe that you can compose so well, in a word, the song you wrote is beautiful.” Forced to withdraw from public life because she was a woman, this new documentary investigation explores why Maria-Anna was retired and what happened to her own musical compositions. From multi-awarded Director/Producer Madeleine Hetherton-Miau and Producer Rebecca Barry, Mozart’s Sister is a ‘musical-true-crime’ story that explores the lost talent of Maria-Anna Mozart. Mozart's Sister Documentary is in cinemas from 31 October 2024. The film raises broader and ongoing issues about the marginalisation of women composers in the classical music and performance world.

Tune in on Tuesday from 9am til noon on Triple R - 3RRR 102.7FM!

Don Watson, acclaimed author and former speechwriter to Paul Keating, speaks in-depth about his Quarterly Essay, High Noon: Trump, Harris and America on the Brink, on the 2024 US Presidential Election and whether the United States of America is disintegrating. He travelled around the country as part of his research for the essay earlier this year.

Amy will also be joined by a special panel with Daniel Boetker-Smith (CCP Director), Catlin Langford (CCP Curator 2022-24), Jessie Norman, and Christopher Sutherland, to talk about a brilliant photography project and book co-published by Perimeter Books and the Centre for Contemporary Photography. ‘Auto-Photo: A Life in Portraits’ tells the story of Alan Adler, a Melbourne man who is likely the the most photographed person in Australia, and is also perhaps the oldest and longest-serving photobooth technician in the world. Alan maintained a suite of photobooths across Melbourne/Naarm for over 50 years – most notably, at Flinders Street Station – and would undertake weekly testing and servicing on each photobooth across his network. Adler would take a seat in the booth and produce a test strip of photographs – these photos from the 1970s to the 2010s – form the basis of the book and a forthcoming exhibition in 2025. In 2018, with the booth at Flinders Street Station facing imminent closure, Christopher Sutherland and Jessie Norman – whose operation later became known as Metro-Auto-Photo – began working with Adler to generate interest in his work and to successfully save his photobooth.

It’s Mid-Autumn Festival (also known as Moon Festival) on Tuesday 17th September.
