Play & Connect with your Newborn ⭐️

Having a newborn can be really overwhelming sometimes and you can find yourself second guessing everything you are doing.

It's a great idea to slow down and take some time each day to 'play and connect' with your newborn outside of feeding and sleeping time.

Sleep Deprivation can be torture! Here are my 5 top tips below to keep you energised and get you through this challenging time.

1. Ask/Accept the help! Don't feel guilty or ashamed. It takes a village and it allows others to bond with your baby too!

2. Movement - super important too move your body each day when you can. You can time bubs nap to be in the pram so you can pop a podcast on, grab a coffee and get your steps up which will actually energise your body!

3. Go to bed at night when bubs does. This will allow you to get more hours of sleep in the bank therefore even if your little one wakes a few times overnight because you have had those extra hours at the start you won't feel so tired the next day.

4. Nourish your body the best you can - eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water. (Mmm maybe plenty of coffee too 😉)

5. Pick a time in the day, perhaps your little ones lunch time sleep to put your feet up, sit down and relax!

This period of sleepless nights does pass quickly when you look back, however when you are in the thick of it it feels tough so just take one day at a time.

Settling Methods ✨✨

It's important to remember that any changes you make to your child's sleep routine that you will expect crying.

Babies cry to communicate - they let us know when they are hungry, tired, sleepy, when they don't like something etc....

It is up to you as parents to decide what avenue you want to explore when teaching your child to sleep independently.

I have listed the settling methods from slowest to fastest so you have a good idea of how it works. There is no right or wrong to how you teach your baby to go to sleep it purely depends on you and your baby!

A sleep consultant (like me!) is really helpful in supporting you through this process and giving you the confidence to implement the method that suits you best to get your Bub sleeping great! It's good to remember that everything takes time and it doesn't just happen over night.

Get in touch today with me if you'd like support with this!

IN COT SETTLING ✨

If bubs has just moved into their cot and you want to start slow and provide a gentle yet effective hands on settling technique - sshhhing and patting is great one to use.

1. Ensure bubs is nice and calm
2. Place in the cot and turn on their side facing away from you.
3. Start loud shhhing and firm yet gentle patting that has a consistent rhythm.
4. Remember their sleep cycle and an ideal sweet spot to slow the patting and shhhing down and leave the room would be between 10-20 minutes. (Each baby is different)

Once they have mastered this settling technique and are falling asleep quite quickly each time - the next step would be to work on self settling.

Please get in touch via DM if this is something you would like support with. ✨✨

Capping the first nap of the day!

Lots of parents I have spoken with have been advised previously if something was off with with their little ones sleep that they should first look at capping the morning nap. I'm not saying this incorrect however my approach would be first to look at the overnight sleep and what is happening there.

For example if your little one is going to bed at 7pm and then throughout the evening (pending age too) they are waking 2 times for a feed plus any additional wake ups they may be having this would severely reduce the overnight sleep total if you look at 12 hours per night - which would equal to a very over tired baby in the morning.

So, when it comes to their first nap of the day if we cap it to say 45 mins only and their next nap may not be until 12pm in the day then that will be heavily impacting their body and if would make bubs even more tired.

Example 5 month old:
6pm bedtime
Wakes 3 times over night (1 hour each time)
6:30am wake up
= 9.5 hours night sleep (not enough)

First morning nap: 8:30 - 9:15am (45 mins)
Lunch sleep: 11:15am

This would mean in nearly a 5 hour period bubs has only had 45 mins sleep which is not ideal and would heavily be impacting how overtired they are.

We need to first work on the night wakes for anything age appropriate ☺️ This is where I come in and can help you narrow down and navigate this.

What causes Catnapping?

We've all been there - bubs starts to wake 40-45 mins on the dot after every sleep and it starts to get frustrating as they were "sleeping fine before"!

Catnapping can be caused by several factors such as:
1. Hunger
2. Sleep associations (how is your Bub falling asleep? Is it independently?)
3. Startle reflex (if less than 4 months old they will still have an immature startle reflex)
4. Sleep Environment - ensure their room is pitch black.
5. The dummy

The biggest cause that comes up time and time again is number 2 - sleep associations it's important (when you are both ready) to teach our babies to self settle - this will enable them to sleep longer and more restorative stretches as when they wake after one sleep cycle they won't be relying on what put them to sleep in the first place.

If this is something you would like help with please feel free to DM me!

On the go nap tips! 🌙⭐️

The best nap to select for an on the go nap if you have a child that is sleeping more than one nap a day is the shortest nap!

The longest nap is recommended to be at home in their bassinet or cot to really try and encourage that long restorative sleep.

A portable white noise machine is fantastic for naps on the go in the car or pram.

Take sleep props with you if your baby prefers such a dummy, comforter, white noise, blanket etc....

Naps on the go give you the freedom to get out of the house, run errands, do some exercise, catch up with friends. Enjoy!!

4 Month Sleep Regression⭐️

The dreaded 4 month sleep regression! Is it as bad as some make it out to be? Maybe! Maybe not!

Both my children's sleep did not get affected by the 4 month regression, super lucky? Maybe! Maybe not!

This development phase is when your baby goes from having 2 sleep cycles (awake then asleep) to having 4 sleep cycles (very light sleep, deep sleep, back to light sleep and then difficulty trying to link their sleep cycles).

How can we get ahead before we reach the 4 month mark??

Teaching our little one to self settle on their own before we get to the 4 months mark makes this an easier transition. The older bubs gets they are more reliant on whatever sleep association is getting them to sleep.

If you would like help with a gentle approach to having your little one self settle before they reach that 4 month mark please feel free to DM me or make a consult booking in the link in my bio. Let's get you the sleep you deserve. ⭐️🌙

I get this question a lot! "Can I start to provide more sleep support and guidance to my baby under 3 months of age?" And the answer is ... Yes.

You can start off very slowly and gently with certain settling techniques such as shhhhing and patting your baby to sleep in your arms and then popping them down in their cot when they are calm and drowsy.

You can really take a look at their sleep associations and what you think might be the best way forward.

We (sleep consultant) can be a great help in this area as before your baby reaches 4 months old (an ideal age to implement a routine etc) they can put together a gentle yet effective sleep plan on how you want to move forward and what the ideal sleep situation looks like for you.

If your little one is 3 months and under please don't hesitate to DM me and we can slowly start setting you up for sleep success the right way.
