About 70 per cent of the municipality’s population reside in the urban areas, which makes up only 3 per cent of the land. The remainder live in rural areas. The Shire has over 55 suburbs, towns

and rural communities, making it a very diverse municipality. The Shire offices are based in Lilydale. The town, 39 kilometres from Melbourne’s centre, is the outermost of Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, before the rural upper Yarra Valley. Lilydale’s features include Lillydale Lake, a recreational area located in the region’s wetlands. Nowadays, the lake is surrounded by new housing estates. The lake is situated within a park, which extends for over 100 hectares. Lillydale Lake itself is 28 hectares in size, and has a 440 metre long dam wall. In the park, there are more than 10 kilometres of shared trails, a community room, a playground, BBQs and a picnic area. Non powered boating is perrmitted on the lake, with a launch ramp also put to good use during the summer months. Running through Lilydale, The Olinda Creek has its source in the Dandenong Ranges. The newspaper was established as the Lilydale Express by William Axford and was first published on June 30, 1886. Since then the Express has had 15 owners and it was sold to the Leader group in 1971. The Express was renamed in May 2001 to Lilydale & Yarra Valley Leader.

Major features include Dandenong Ranges National Park, Kinglake National Park, Yarra Ranges National Park, Sherbrooke Forest, Healesville Sanctuary, Puffing Billy Railway, Yarra Valley Railway, Mount Donna Buang, Mount Dandenong Observatory, Maroondah Reservoir, the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail, Lillydale Lake, Yarra Ranges Regional Museum, Hedgend Maze, William Ricketts Sanctuary, Chirnside Park Shopping Centre, the Yarra River and numerous wineries and vineyards.
