We are very pleased to announce that our disability-led 'Disability and Screen Work in Australia: Report for Industry 2023' is a finalist for the Screen Well Awards - Initiative of The Year!!

Our humble thanks go to the people who participated in this first-of-its-kind study - investigating the experiences of Disabled workers in the Australian screen industry. Your stories and your experiences are the essence of this report - and what drives us to make positive change.

Enormous thanks to Campbell Message for believing that this work mattered, and accepting our research proposal at Melbourne Disability Institute, The University of Melbourne. Your support and patience with this project was (and is) so valued and appreciated.

To Dr Radha O'Meara for sitting patiently as we gushed about our dreams for this research, and actualising them into something even better - your work and your passion for this project was incredible and we are so proud of you! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

To Media Mentors Australia for your mentorship and support in circulating the survey, and making sure our report reached the right people - we thank you very dearly!

Nothing like this could be possible without the hard work of the people we have mentioned above - and we love that this work has grown our networks in the industry and beyond. We always hoped that conducting research into the screen industry would uncover the triumphs and tribulations of others that deserve to be on record, and we knew that we weren't alone. We couldn't be more proud to count ourselves alongside the Disabled creatives that make our industry great. It is our hope that this report sparks positive change for all of us.

If you'd like to join us for the Screen Well Awards - please head to the Screen Well website to register your details, or click through to the article below! Congratulations to the other finalists and let's keep up the great work - talking about mental health and well-being needs to be normalised, and we're excited to see the array of projects and advocates that have helped to bring this out into the open.

If you are yet to connect with our research paper, don't be shy - it is available in a range of accessible formats and we are real people here to discuss the findings with you - please reach out if you require an alternate format as it would be our pleasure to ensure that research is meaningful and accessible to those it represents!

After an extensive submissions period, Screen Well has unveiled the finalists for its inaugural awards program, designed to recognise wellbeing initiatives and innovations in the screen industry.

Hi honey, I’m “Home”!🤗👨🏿‍🦼🤩🌹😘💘💗💘😍😘😘😘
Greetings and salutations to you all my dear valued, esteemed and treasured social media friends, acquaintances, contemporaries and allies - and anyone else who’d just like to feel included: “
I’m baaaack”!🎶🤩😎😉
After having spent most of the past last few months being unceremoniously “excommunicated” (and suspended”from Facebook), for breaching their “community standards” by posting a “dad joke” spirited cartoon picture that quipped about wheelchairs, (which as an actual wheelchair user, redefined to me-the very meaning of the term “ridiculously “ironic” to say the least), so we decided on Saturday to celebrate by indulging as honoured guests at a ”celebration of life” lunch party hosted by dear friends of Kate’s parents - who are now also now good friends of ours too (The Nelsons),at an absolutely charming and exquisite French restaurant in Hawthorn East called “Franco Belg” -
which if I recall correctly, was actually the first French restaurant that I’d ever been to.

What stuck out to me as a truly outstanding
positive experience was the bonding sense of “camaraderie” that has not just survived - but has clearly thrived between extended families for the better part of half a century.
I was so touched by witnessing so many genuinely heart warming, and such sincerely spirited bonding moments, that I left in the faithful hope that my own friendships with my one time fellow students, and now “long term pals”might similarly still thriving over the many decades yet to come.
Wow, how blessed were we to have shared that experience at such an extraordinarily”auspicious” occasion.
It’s great to be back Facebook”
Cheers &thanks - with Lotsaluv, A.D.🌹🤗😇

I know we all get asked to do surveys from time to time, and we are all busy. This is really important, so we implore you to please take just a little bit of time to do this important survey.
The Disability and Screen Survey is now open and will close on the 11 March 2022: https://go.unimelb.edu.au/fu3i

How are disabled people included in the Australian screen industry?
What is it like to work in the screen industry if you have a disability?
The answer is, we just don’t know. But you can help us find out.
Researchers from the University of Melbourne have partnered with A2K Media on a disability-led project to understand Disability in the Australian screen industry and to answer these questions for the first time.
As someone in this industry, your voice is an important part of reaching this goal.
We would like to hear from you whether you have a disability or not. It is important that we hear from people with a range of views and experiences.
We would like to hear from you if you are working in the Australian screen industry in any role.
By taking part in this survey, you will help us to understand how disability is included, and how it is experienced, in the screen industry across Australia.
This research will contribute to advocacy and training strategies to help make the screen industry a more diverse and inclusive place to work.
The Disability and Screen Survey is now open and will close on the 11 March 2022: https://go.unimelb.edu.au/fu3i
All responses to this survey will be anonymised. It will take you approximately 15 minutes to complete.
You can leave this survey and come back to it later. Just make sure you open this survey from the same computer or device that you started it on.
If you would like to complete this survey over the phone, you can let us know by phoning Campbell on +61 03 9035 7775.
If you have any questions or feedback on this survey, please feel free to get in touch with the University of Melbourne’s Dr Radha O’Meara: [email protected].
Many thanks for your contribution!
