THIS ARTIST, LÂLKA!
Again, ‘Yuh’ is not just a song; it’s a statement. The visualiser for the song, is a stunning, artistic statement in and of itself!

This is the kind of unique package this artist brings to the world and we, at Tomboi Records, are forever impressed by the way her distinct sound always pushes boundaries, and still manages to do so with all her asset production as well.

Yuh’s deep basslines and soaring melodies create a powerful and chaotic atmosphere that’s become synonymous with LÂLKA ’s music…Her work is often a sonic rebellion, capturing the essence of underground club culture and pushing it into new, electrifying territories.

‘Yuh’ will be performed live at the November 2nd Pre-Release Party for LÂLKA ’s upcoming EP, Willfire (Zhì Huǒ 志火), which features the track. The event at one of Melbourne’s best-sounding venues, QQQ ST. PARK, will treat fans of this classically trained artist gone rogue, to an early taste of the EP as well as debuting a brand-new 360 degree live set on their high-powered Nexo P1 system, also highlighting LÂLKA’s prowess as a multi-instrumentalist among her artistic gifts.

It’s an Afrobeats match made in the hottest of heavens with LION releasing their new, fiery track “Mitmita” featuring the iconic South African electro/hip-hop artist, Dope Saint Jude.
🥵 OUT JULY 31ST, PRE-SAVE HERE: 🔥https://orcd.co/mitmita

Named after a red-hot Ethiopian seasoning, the track is just as sassy and sultry, utilizing the metaphor of Mitmita’s chilli kick to capture the strength of AFRICAN-LGBTQIA+ culture.

The track is underscored by booming 80s soundscapes and dynamic percussion. Just when things couldn’t get spicier, LION turns up the heat with their gravel vocal delivery, while Dope Saint Jude adds the extra flavour in her verse, which is bold, unapologetic, and subversive.

MEDIA RELEASE:
The iconic Dope Saint Jude and Tomboi's This is LION are turning up the heat with ‘Mitmita’. Beware; you’ll definitely feel the burn!

“LION’s production made it easy to jam on and create fun music,” explains Saint Jude, when describing what made the collaboration work, but was sure to add “we are also committed to creating spaces where our diverse experiences are acknowledged and our identities are honoured … Through music and advocacy, we strive to inspire change and foster a sense of belonging and pride within our community.”

On the creative process for “Mitmita”, LION adds that “MitMita is my Ethiopian Mother’s go-to seasoning, so having it as the focal point of this song feels connective as we are here to spice things up by celebrating and supporting members of our Q***r BIPOC global community, who too often experience trauma related to the lack of capacity to proudly present their identity.”

Hence why LION timed the release announcement at the end of Pride Month 2024, underlying that Pride is something we need to continue to support people of a similar heritage to embrace beyond June each year. It was also why he was compelled to work with Dope Saint Jude to help use their united platform in the music industry to give a voice to those who may not feel they have one as yet.

“In my case, being q***r is often deemed as ‘un-African’, which is a major source of identity conflict for myself and many others I am aware of,” LION explains. “These discriminatory statements are often made in the name of religious beliefs which in turn see us q***r folk referred to as ‘devils.’ I decided to mock that character by showcasing that we’re not evil, but rather a beautiful community and we’ll continue to stand strong in our power with this song and it’s invitation for any BIPOC friends who have felt shame around their identity to reclaim our narratives together!”

His collaborator, Dope Saint Jude agrees: “This collaboration is important to me because as an artist and advocate, my passion lies in amplifying the voices of LGBTQIA+ Africans. Our stories, our struggles, and our triumphs deserve to be heard and celebrated.”

But in true LION style, the advocacy element of the piece is deep within the layers of fun. If you weren’t already feeling their burn, LION visually increases the heat in the “Mitmita” clip.

Accompanied by two commanding dancers, the video boasts dynamic choreography shots, and features LION themself crawling towards a 3D lion. With the lion being the national animal of Ethiopia, this scene is a powerful symbol of LION’s identity in peak form.

LION’s other bold singles, “Not Your Fetish” and “Attention” met with critical claim, as did his performances this year to tens of thousands of rave crowds at Sydney World Pride and Midsumma Carnival, Melbourne Festival in Australia. At just 23 years old, LION is set to become an incredibly influential artist. Being the third release off their debut EP “Reclamation”, “Mitmita” ignites the fire that drives LION’s spirit. –END–

LION shares with us:

“In my case, being q***r is often deemed as ‘un-African’, which is a major source of identity conflict for myself and many others I am aware of,” Lion explains. “These discriminatory statements are often made in the name of religion, so us q***r folk are referred to as ‘the devil.’.. So, I decided to mock that character, the devil they make us out to be and showcase that. We’re not evil, we are a beautiful community and we’ll continue to stand strong in our power with this song. My message extends to any BIPOC friends who have felt shame around their identity. I’m inviting them to reclaim our narratives together!”
