In the immediate wake of three murders of young Melbourne women, and eighty-five murders of women and children in Australia this yeat, committed mostly by men the victims knew, thousands marched though the CBD today calling for an end to domestic abuse and femicide. Most donned orange; the colour of the anti-family-violence organisation Respect Victoria, who organised the event.

11 September: A planned blockade and protest of Land Forces 2024, the largest defence industry and weapons exhibition in the southern hemisphere, erupts into chaos. While police estimates of up to 25,000 protesters were not met, several thousand did show up from 6 am. Some demonstrators trying to prevent entrances to the convention threw items and liquids at officers, built small blockades and started rubbish fires, while police used force, pepper spray, tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets on the crowd at large, some methods only seen previously used on anti-lockdown protesters in 2021.

About 30 people, mostly regulars of the weekly anti-vax/sovereign citizen rallies at Parliament House of Victoria, attended a 'TERF' anti-trans rally that was out-sized and out-sounded by a counter-rally. A handful of scuffles broke out when police attempted to move counter-protesters further from the anti-trans group, with at least one arrested and at least one injured by a police horse.

On slide 10, a trans-inclusive pride flag can be seen inside Parliament House, flying behind the anti-trans group.

6,000 origami houses were placed on the steps of Parliament House of Victoria by the Victorian Homeless Network, symbolising 10% of the 60,000 social houses needed in Victoria. Dozens of MPs from across the political spectrum descended to steps for the accompanying rally; pictured on slide 4 is Member for Western Victoria Sarah Mansfield (Greens) and on slide 6 are Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath and Member for Morwell Martin Cameron (Nationals)

Hundreds braved the rain in Melbourne on Saturday, 27 July, as one part of over two dozen rallies in Australia this weekend against domestic violence and femicide. These rallies were organised by Indigenous-led not-for-profit 'What Were You Wearing?' founded by Sarah Williams (slide 3) and intend to draw attention to the 54 women who have been murdered in Australia this year, mostly by men they knew, and the commonality of abusive relationships. Speakers included Bianca and Boyd Unwin, the sister and father of Katie Haley, a 29-year-old mother of two who was murdered by her partner in 2018. Katie's young daughter joined them on stage (slide 8)

Aurora Australis, seen from Jan Juc Beach in Torquay, south of Melbourne, at around 1am on 12 May 2024. The Southern Lights are very rarely seen this far north, only made possible by the most intense solar storm since 2003.

I (rather stupidly) didn't bring a tripod or a wide-angle lens and yet I left with no regrets. Stunning and magical experience I will remember forever.

The 2024 duck hunting season begins today in Victoria after the state government rejected a ban recommended by a parliamentary inquiry earlier this year. Jack Pascoe, a Yuin man research fellow at the University of Melbourne, writes in The Conversation AU:

"I, along with my Elder Anthony McKnight, made a submission to the inquiry. To us as Yuin men, Yumburra (black duck) – one of the species being hunted – is a culturally significant species and our tribal totem. Yumburra is Country, we are Country. Harm to Yumburra is harm to us."

Recreational duck hunting is banned in the states of New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia but remains legal in South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria.

The state of Victoria will impose harsher penalties on hunting violations and impose mandatory training beginning in 2025, with the stated goal of reducing the effect of recreational hunting on endangered species and long-term population declines.

Despite concerning posts and emails from anti-lgbt groups and individuals, a drag time story hour with performer Dandrogyny went ahead at State Library of Victoria without incident and with support from the group Rainbow Community Angels. This is a notable change as a multitude of LGBT+ events were cancelled on police advice after threats materialised against those events in Victoria and across Australia in 2022 and 2023

Many outside the southern continent are not aware that Australia’s national holiday, Australia Day, has long been contentious. Celebrating the date of English colonisation of the continent, many deem the day instead, Invasion Day, others still, Survival Day, and a day of mourning for Indigenous Australian lives and culture lost thoughout colonisation. Pictured here on 26 January, 2024, thousands gathered in Melbourne at Parliament House of Victoria, marching to Flinders St Station to rally in protest of the holiday, with some demanding Australia Day be celebrated on another date, others that the holiday be abolished entirely.
