Can I please say a massive thank you to Ian in Bob Price Trophies as my daughter, nearly 3 recently became a big sister and each day we pass the shop, Ian comes out to say hi to us.
Today he came out to us with a medal for her with “Best Big Sister” on it, it was the kindest gift and she is so proud of it as she wore it all afternoon. What an amazing community we live in.

I also live with Autism but this does not stop me from achieving my goals. I have a very supportive family and some great mentors and close friends.

Maroubra’s Kathleen Lamond wins coveted state award
Former nurse Kathleen Lamond has been named in-home care provider Home Instead’s NSW CARE Giver of the Year for 2024.
Affectionately known by colleagues and friends as Kathy, the Maroubra resident was honoured to claim the coveted award at a gala evening in Sydney on Friday (August 30).
Kathy decided to become a CARE Giver after she found her career in nursing wasn’t as holistic as she expected it to be.
“I wasn’t able to see people as a ‘whole’ in my time in nursing, I wanted to have that personal relationship with them, which I wasn’t able to have in nursing,” she said.
When asked what she loved about her job as a CARE Giver, Kathy struggled to come up with one thing.
“Walking out at the end of the day knowing you’ve done everything you can for that client. I go to work and come home from work feeling happy now, I felt frustrated when I was nursing because I couldn’t have that close relationship with my patients.”
Kathy did not expect to win the NSW CARE Giver of the Year award. However, she felt very humbled and emotional that she won as it meant her hard work was not going unnoticed, and she was privileged to be among some great finalists for the award.
When asked what she will be doing to celebrate, she tearfully said, “I am going to go home and give my husband a hug. He would be so proud of me.”
In the 12 years since becoming a caregiver, Kathy has provided exceptional relationship-based in-home care through Home Instead Sydney Eastern Suburbs & Sutherland Shire.
“Kathy’s ability to blend tenderness, awareness, practicality, and patience make her a standout CARE Giver,”
Home Instead Sydney Eastern Suburbs Sutherland Shire People Experience Manager, Tanya Ward, said.
With a background in nursing, Kathy has always gravitated to work that helps others.
“Since joining our team, Kathy has cared for clients with a broad range of needs and shown an enduring commitment to delivering exceptional care and understanding,” Tanya said.
”Kathy’s genuine care and personal investment in her clients extends beyond caregiving tasks. She listens to their stories, engages in their interests, and treats everyone with respect and warmth.
“She consistently takes the initiative to enhance the lives of her clients.”
This includes a woman with an acquired brain injury whose mother has dementia.
“Kathy navigates complex family dynamics with sensitivity and has become indispensable to the woman’s brothers, who trust her to care for their sister’s unique needs,” Tanya said.
“She arranges necessary appointments with care and compassion, and also provides proactive suggestions to improve her wellbeing.”
For another client with dementia, Kathy's heartfelt approach profoundly impacted her life.
“Despite the communication challenges, Kathy found ways to bring joy into this woman’s life, whether through shared activities or simple gestures, ultimately earning a smile from her during her final days,” Tanya said.
“Kathy leads by example and is a respected and much-loved caregiver in our team.”
Home Instead’s CARE Giver of the Year Awards are in their 15th year, with the winners of other state awards to be announced at a series of upcoming events in September and October.
Home Instead CEO Kris Whitehead said it was important to recognise the contribution each of the company’s 4000 caregivers around Australia.
“Our CARE Givers are at the heart of everything we do – they are the ones who are delivering essential care to older Australians who deserve to keep their independence for as long as possible,” Kris said.
“We are extremely proud of the contribution each of our CARE Givers make and we are excited to recognise the incredible work of those who have gone above and beyond in
their roles in 2024.”
As the winner of the CARE Giver of the Year Award for NSW, Kathy received a trophy and a $500 voucher.

Can you please ask people to be more aware and considerate when parking? I returned to my car in Eastgardens with 2 small kids, one only 10weeks old.
This person parked so close to me I couldn’t open the doors and had to get my 2yr old to climb across seats and I climbed into back to buckle him in and I had to pass my 10 week old across to other side of car.
There were plenty of spaces and space the other side absolutely no reason for this and it just caused a lot of unnecessary stress.

I would really like to give a shout out to Peter at Maroubra Shoe Repairs on Maroubra Rd. He’s always so cheerful and helpful to his customers. He does more than shoes repairs and cut keys, he fixed the zipper on my bag, changed my watched batteries, and all done with a smile at very reasonable prices too.

I understand that not everyone likes our local Councillors for their own reasons however it does not give anyone the right to vandalise or slash their posters.
They are expensive and each Councillor has the right to promote themselves.
It is not what our community is about. All you need to do is vote for the person that you believe is doing the best job for our people, our community.
If a particular Councillor is not doing what you believe is right and does not have good values or ethics, that is your opinion to have just like I have mine.
This behaviour won't be tolerated and those who have defaced and damaged these posters will be held accountable as there are CCTV cameras everywhere. It is illegal.
Be respectful, and if something is bothering you then take it up with them in a mature way.

I went to my first ever Sydney Swans game against the Adelaide Crows. Wow, it was awesome. The atmosphere was electric, the crowd were so welcoming and they are the minor premiers! 36,000 people turned up and getting to and from the SCG was easy on the light rail. Still need to learn the rules and work out why they need 7 umpires though. Cheer, Cheer ❤️🤍
