FRIDAY THE 13TH | FLASHBACK💥🚨

Most of us love scary movies. Friday the 13th is a great day to pay tribute to the special Kiwi contributions to the horror genre.

And to note that we like a nervous laugh while we’re watching.

From Peter Jackson’s insane debuts, the rightly named Bad Taste and Braindead, to kidult NZ classic Under The Mountain on screens big and small, Death Warmed Up, international favourite The Irrefutable truth About Demons, cult classic The Evil Dead and its TV spinoff, all the way to the utterly original global hit What We Do In The Shadows. And over the years many RBA artists have played their creepy part in this bloodthirsty collection.

ROCKY HORROR SHOW 1973 | FLASHBACK💥🚨
Actor Richard O’Brien grew up in New Zealand but his creative genius flourished in the UK in where he created The Rocky Horror Show in 1973. Amazingly, it has been in constant production ever since - a timeless homage to B movies and gender diversity. And The Rocky Horror Picture Show is one of the all time cult movies. (50 years on, O’Brien is back in New Zealand with the world premiere tour of The Kingdom of Bling)
For RBA’s Joel Tobeck it sparks memories of his bold and brash turn in the Auckland Theatre Company’s 2002 production, an experience he described as ‘a blast!’, and about which the Herald said: “His Frank’N’ Furter is a marvellous creation. In his corset and fishnets - and, yes, pearls - Tobeck is louche and lithe. He is a sinewy feline predator, but one who stomps rather than struts, and never hams it up, in his platform shoes.”

THE DEAD LANDS TVS 2020 | FLASHBACK
💥✨
The Dead Lands television series was an innovative partnership between TVNZ, GFC and AMC, the American network responsible for The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad.
The series is set in the same world as the original breakthrough movie, with new characters, a new story and an awesome Kiwi cast, this time on a global platform.

It was also a milestone moment for three special RBA artists.

Action actor Briar Rose came from Melbourne, ready to spread her wings and relishing the Māori cultural framing. A quiet presence on set, experiencing his first big professional production, was a youthful Evander Brown, soon to join the RBA ranks.

And coming out of retirement to play a pivotal role in the dark, dramatic tale, was Vicky Haughton, one of our most experienced and respected actors

Vicky’s career is woven through a generation of screen and stage creativity.
As a singer, dancer and presenter she was part of pioneering TV music shows like 12 Bar Rhythm ‘n’ Shoes and VJM. Her stage career, including 10 years with Auckland’s Mercury Theatre, embraced both drama and musicals including Oliver, The King and I, The Sound of Music, Chicago, South Pacific and Carmen. On screen she has appeared in Marlin Bay, Mercy Peak, Mataku, Nights in the Garden of Spain, King Kong and Whale Rider.

VIGIL 1984 | FLASHBACK FRIDAY💥🚨

One of New Zealand’s most important early feature films is having a very special 40th anniversary screening in Wellington on Tuesday 19th November.

Vigil was the first New Zealand film ever selected for official competition at the Cannes Film Festival. It went on to win many awards and massive praise around the world.

RBA’s connections run deep. Our founder, Robert Bruce, was not only stunt coordinator on Vigil, but represented Frank Whitten - unforgettable in his time as Ted West in Outrageous Fortune and forever associated with a certain cheese brand (‘good on ya, mate’) Frank’s NZOnscreen biography says: “Reviews of Vigil tended to the rhapsodic, with mention of words like stunning (The Boston Herald), extraordinary (The Los Angeles Times) and astonishing (The Guardian). Critics tended to concentrate on the film’s central child protagonist Toss (played by Fiona Kay); but Whitten also impressed in a near-wordless role, making a memorable, fog-shrouded appearance as the farm worker who is perceived by Toss as a threatening imposter.”

Faith’s creative fires burn brightly and she is well on her way to a remarkable career.

NZTVA | GIVE ME BABIES TVNZ💥

Increasingly, today’s action actors are rounded performers, not only capable of physical stunts but also an integral part of the storytelling. Three of the best are RBA’s own Briar Rose, Isis de Souza and Jericho Nicodemus. They feature in a special episode of a special series in the 2024 NZ Television Awards.

The ‘Give Me Babies’ episode of TVNZ’s groundbreaking ‘Motherhood’ has racked up four nominations - Best Comedy - Ankita Singh, Calvin Sang, Briar Collard, Best Director (Drama/Comedy) - Calvin Sang Best Post-Production Design - Erin Woolhouse / The Rebel Fleet, Best Production Design - Andy Currie. It’s a big shout out to production company Eyes and Ears Video Production who have polished their narrative skills on some of our most distinctive commercial productions.

Thoroughly road-tested, from the ´NZ Fringe to Edinburgh, RBA’s Zoë Frendin is taking her solo show ‘Hi I’m Zoë’ to the Adelaide Fringe Festival in early 2025.
🎭✨
Reviewer Carly Fisher said of the season at Two/FiftySeven: ‘Zoë Frendin is charismatic and has a sharp sense of comedic timing. Her commitment to story is prevalent and her ability to think quickly to land an improvised joke is impressive and exciting to watch.’

Adelaide will be another milestone for this high-energy, multitalented artist.
