We’d just hopped in at one of the FADs and were drifting in the blue, seeing what was around. At first, it was just a few whaler sharks cruising around, nothing too concerning. But before long, an inquisitive oceanic white tip rocked up and anyone who knows oceanics knows they’re not a shark you wanna mess around with. They’re often unpredictable, aggressive, and always on the hunt for a meal 🦈
I’d just spotted a school of nice yellowfin tuna down deep, and as I put my head back in the water, a much bigger oceanic came right in on me from behind, without any of us even noticing. That was when we had to really lock in, and the idea of shooting a tuna went straight out the window 😂
Once the bigger oceanic showed up, all the other sharks must’ve sensed a shift in our body language as we had grouped together. They started moving up the water column, which makes them a lot harder to keep track of. In situations like that, it only takes one to get a bit more curious and take a little bite, and things can change very quickly! So I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little nervous 😅
But eventually they eased off and I managed to shoot my PB mahi, which brought them all back in again 💀
That’s a story for another day though 😉
