🐣 Coastal emu alert!
This emu and its chicks were spotted at Tyndale this morning. Thanks to Debbie Newton for capturing this video and sending it in.
Police are investigating a link between a vehicle and a fire that destroyed a commercial premises in River Street in Ballina and the property of residents living above.
At least six people were in the units above the shop at 3.30am.
Olivia Kuhl lives adjacent to the property where her aunty resides in one of two units.
"I woke up to the biggest crash I've ever heard, and a Mercedes ram raided the tobacco next door, and then 35 minutes later it was completely up in flames," she said.
Ms Kuhl said the explosion was caused by a BMW ramming the Mercedes further into the shop.
"I bought a Volkswagen four days ago, that's a pile of ash, and then my father's work truck got half burnt out," she said.
"I can't go to my house, it's a bit surreal.
"My aunty has just lost everything she owned, still a bit shaken actually."
Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
More to come.

Making homemade passata
🍅🧑🍳 Homemade Passata 🍅🧑🍳
Make the most of peak tomato season with chef David Lovett's recipe for Passata, a traditional and versatile staple of Italian cuisine.
"With tomatoes in abundance and eating beautifully I thought we’d seize the moment and trap that goodness into jars. Making passata is a great activity to do with the family. As you can see from the video, my son Lennox rather liked it and took control of proceedings. A food mill or tomato press are handy for this but you can also use a metal colander with medium sized holes," said David.
Passata
Ingredients:
• As many ripe tomatoes as you can get
• Salt
• Fresh basil leaves
Method:
• Begin by washing your tomatoes, remove the green tops and cut out any blemishes.
• 1/4 fill a large pot with water and bring to a boil, add the tomatoes (making sure they are submerged) and boil for 10 minutes. You can do this in batches if your pot is small.
• After 10 minutes, scoop the tomatoes out into a colander to drain, they will begin to break and water will leak out of them.
• Once drained start to add them to your food mill or press and pass them through, catching the passata in one container and the skin and seeds in another. (I pass the skin and seeds through again to extract every last bit of goodness out)
• Once you’ve got the passata, season it with a little sea salt, add a leaf or two of basil to sterilised jars and fill with the tomato. Secure the lids and pop into a pot, cover with water and boil for 15 minutes, turn heat off and allow to cool in the water overnight.
• Once cool they will store for the next 12 months in your cupboard.
Pro tip: The obvious use would be tossed with pasta, but at breakfast bringing some passata to a bubble with a little garlic and chilli then cracking an egg or two in to cook, finishing with some fresh herbs and some nice bread ain’t a bad way to start the day.
