TOTAL FIRE BAN for our area 5/1/2025.

No fire can be lit in the open air or be allowed to remain alight in the open air between 12:01AM and 11:59PM.

Bailing hay on very hot days is a common cause for fires in our area. Where possible, PLEASE avoid this. If you can’t avoid it, please follow the guidelines below. Please also tell your farmer mates that may not be on Facebook.

Can you use self-propelled farm machinery, tractors (including balers), slashers, earth-moving, excavating propelled by a heat engine within 9 metres of any crops, grass, stubble, weeds, undergrowth or other vegetation?
This should be AVOIDED wherever possible because the risk of starting fires is extremely high 🔥and the impact of fire on these days may be much greater. 🚒 😰
If the work is ESSENTIAL, follow these GUIDELINES. The equipment:
◦ is free from faults and mechanical defects that could cause an outbreak of fire
◦ is fitted with a spark arrester in working order, a turbocharger or exhaust aspirated air cleaner
◦ carries fire suppression equipment comprising either:
▪ at least one knapsack spray pump, in working order, fully charged with water, with a capacity of not less than 9 litres, or
▪ at least one water (stored pressure) fire extinguisher, in working order, fully charged with water and maintained at the correct pressure, with a capacity of not less than 9 litres.

Note that the spark arrester, the knapsack spray pump and the water fire extinguisher referred to above must comply with the applicable Australian Standards.

If you are one of the employers that allow your employee to turn out to emergency calls during work hours in Koo Wee Rup or any brigade in Victoria; thankyou. That also goes for our self employed volunteers that drop everything and stop earning money while they are at an emergency call out. Thank you. That’s a huge contribution to Victorian communities.

This is our crew turning out to the Gurdies fire earlier today. We’ve had a few busy days at that fire and probably more to come. Our day crew will change over to a fresh night crew in a couple of hours. Keep in mind we are all 100% unpaid volunteers.

On Friday 22nd November St John the Baptist Primary School grades 3 & 4 students were treated with a visit from us.

The students from grades 3 & 4 were tasked with an assignment to have a working, tested smoke alarm and completed home fire escape plan.

When a student has completed the assignment and the teachers have sighted and marked them off, the students receive their reward.

For those schools yet to jump on board please contact Lisa at [email protected]

CFA has a free Smoke Alarm Installation Program happening where suitably trained volunteers will come to your house, do a survey on what smoke alarms you currently have installed, give you a few tips and information on the care of your alarms and then, if needed install new alarms.
As all alarms have a 10-year service life, all alarms should be replaced if they are more than 10-years old.

The new smoke alarms installed by CFA have a lithium 10-year battery in them so they don’t need changing but the whole alarm should be replaced after 10 years.
If you are interested in Koo Wee Rup CFA volunteers coming to your residence to look at your smoke alarms and, perhaps install new one, please contact [email protected]

Do you v**e? Where do you dispose of your battery v**e? Please take them to Woolies, not your bin.

This morning our Koo Wee Rup, Bayles and Tooradin Fire Brigade volunteers were woken up by our pagers going off, the call was for a garbage truck on fire at the Koo Wee Rec Reserve.

We were quickly on scene, the rear of the truck was fully alight, as was lots of rubbish on the ground that was dumped out of the truck (that’s what the driver does if their rubbish catches fire).

Crews extinguished the fire shortly after arriving and stayed on scene to spread the rubbish out to ensure it was fully extinguished. This was a recycling truck that should have had only recyclable materials in it (but unfortunately it had more than that).

The cause of the fire is undetermined although people disposing of batteries in their bins is a VERY common cause; especially toys with batteries and v**es.

Did you know, small e-waste items (such as tablets, mobile phones, v**es) and batteries can be dropped in the battery container at Woolworths Koo Wee Rup. The item must fit within an 8cm by 40cm slot.
