The stage was set for the A Grade to be a terrific tussle at Panther Park. Conditions were perfect, but would have been warm on the field.
Kingscote got off to the perfect start, with Corby able to goal within the first minute of the game.
It was a high pressure start, with Kingscote able to keep the ball forward, but not able to get a score on the board. Holman was everywhere early, and Corby was able to find himself in a lot of space...

It was a huge weekend for Kangaroo Island netballer Georgie Horjus, as she and her Adelaide Thunderbirds teammates won back-to-back Super Netball premierships, then she was named the side’s Players’ Player for 2024.
“Ever since I was like, five, I wanted to be a Thunderbird, and I couldn’t have done it without the support of my mum and dad and family,” she said. “There were so many Thunderbirds supporters there, and all our families and everyone from KI – it was really special. The Parndana girls, they had big signs and everything – that was pretty cool."

Windy conditions greeted the players as Dudley United hosted Wisanger on Saturday in what was a massive day for the Eagles celebrating its 1954, 1984, 2004 and 2014 premierships.
As champions from yesteryear watched on, it seemed only fitting that a Stoeckel should open the scoring for the hosts with Ethan, son of Neil, marking strongly and converting from the top of the square.
Lots of action and people photos in this week's Islander!

In a round of big wins and clean sweeps, the home sides of both fixtures had big wins in all grades of the Kangaroo Island Football League.
Kingscote easily accounted for Dudley, in a welcome return to the winners list. Western Districts thrashing a short Parndana, in what was a dour day for the visitors and a day to forget for the Roosters.

Recognising the need for increased workforce to meet community health demands on Kangaroo Island, Australian charity Angel Flight is trialling an air transport program to KI.
The program aims to provide direct transport to improve healthcare services, where locums could otherwise spend half a day in transit.
Travel from Adelaide to KI for busy health professionals, some of whom have travelled from interstate, is significantly reduced to just 30 minutes via the free Angel Flight service.
The six-month trial program took its first flight on June 7 transporting GP registrar, Dr Erin O’Halloran.

It’s finally rained on Kangaroo Island, there’s a green tinge across all paddocks, but producers are being asked to think twice before they put the grain cart away.
At a series of workshops run by AGKI, run with funding from Livestock SA, guest speaker and Pro Ag consultant Colin Trengove urged farmers to keep feeding their livestock.
Ewes have peak feed intake seven to eight weeks after lambing, so it is vital that their feed demands are met.
Now that we are in July the days are colder and the pasture will struggle to keep up with the ewe’s demand.
Ewes in poor condition are more prone to disease, will have a decrease in fertility next year and higher death rates of both the ewe and lamb.
More details from Lyn Dohle at PIRSA in this week's paper.

Jared McArdle reports that Dudley United A Grade team has returned to the winners list, accounting for Parndana by 87 points.
Club stalwart and league leading goal kicker, Clayton Willson celebrated his 400th game, and celebrated it in style, kicking 9 goals in a day out.
Parndana started with the wind, and started well, kicking the first couple of the game.
From there on, Dudley was able to fight back, Jacobs was good on the ground and Stoeckel was good in the air.

Kangaroo Island’s netball star Georgie Horjus and her Adelaide Thunderbirds team will be out for redemption tomorrow, as they host the Melbourne Vixens at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.
In a top of the table clash, the two sides will be playing for ladder positions as they look to secure a second chance in the semi-finals.
The Vixens took the win in their first meeting by just one goal at John Cain Arena in Melbourne.
With attendance numbers soaring for the Thunderbirds in 2024, the side will look to capitalize on their crowd to get them over the line.
Unfortunately for netball fans on Kangaroo Island, tickets for the 2024 Super Netball grand final at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre had already sold out, despite only going on sale on June 21.
Georgie said she was loving playing wing attack with the support for her fellow players
“I think I’m learning lots from them and always practicing my shots, so I’m always ready for anything I guess.”

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport has earmarked two buildings at the Kingscote wharf area for demolition, but not the iconic big blue shed once used to house cargo from the Karatta steamship.
The buildings that are slated for demolition are the old harbour master’s building and also the old Penguin Centre and penguin tours building.
Correspondence from the department states the recent lessee of the wharf area, that constructed the desalination plant pipelines, has been contacted to conduct “repairs” of the blue shed surrounds.

In news just in, the latest burrow check at the Penneshaw’s main penguin colony has revealed a strong start to this year’s breeding season.
Penneshaw Penguin Centre operator Alana Whennen said there were close to 30 chicks in their burrows, and two chicks had fledged already.
The great news from Penneshaw comes just as the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board revealed the threats to Kangaroo Island’s penguin colonies.
Alana said while areas such as Kingscote’s foreshore and even the nearby Penneshaw Hog Bay beach area had seen major declines, other areas such as Emu Bay were doing better.
Strong penguin habitat, harbouring breeding success, included the all-important North Terrace coastal walkway area at Penneshaw, which is where the recent burrow count took place.
The tour business, which includes the lease to run the centre building and walkways from the council is now for sale.
The new $1.37 million Frenchman’s Terrace foreshore project announced by the KI Council will see the lower walkway and habitat around the centre and reserve improved.
Alana, who moved to KI six years ago as a school teacher and who took on the business shortly thereafter, said she was ready to move back to Adelaide to be closer to family and other opportunities.
She said she had a wonderful time on the island and had built up the business to where it now ran seven nights a week, with the support of passionate and knowledgeable employees sharing duties of taking either one or two groups, depending on the season.
Regarding the penguin conservation work at Penneshaw, Alana said she believed part of the breeding success was due to the work of the community in safeguarding the North Terrace colony from feral cats, dogs and general human interference.

The Kangaroo Lions Op Shop has a new window display just about every week, thanks to the hard work of the volunteers.
Last week it was 88-year-old Rosie Willson, who filled the space with just a few of her doll collection, including two very old celluloid dolls, along with authentic christening gowns.
Rosie started at the op shop back in 1977, sorting clothes when it was just a storeroom run by Daphne Lovering.
“She was always whistling, so we knew where she was and that she was happy,” Rosie said.
And it was while working with Daphne that she developed her love for dolls...

Due to the support of many islanders and a number of visitors this year, we had a very successful Black Dog Ride 1 Dayer on March 17.
The money raised through registrations, merchandise sales, fundraising and generous donations has been banked and is now available, through a grant system, to any local organisation, which is mental health based.
We would love to see this money being used in our own community but that will only happen if you apply for a grant.
If you have an event or any kind of initiative that aims to highlight the mental health struggle or the prevention of su***de please go to the Black Dog Ride website and apply for a grant.
For crisis support, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Jared McArdle reports that it was two one-sided games in the A Grade on Saturday, Wisanger getting the job done over Parndana by 119 points.
And it was a similar score at Penneshaw, with Western Districts way too good for an undermanned Dudley.
At Parndana, where Maggie was taking photos of all grades, Wisanger were also far too good for a struggling Parndana.
It was a competitive start by the home side, and despite Wisanger kicking six in the first term, Parndana were able to kick a couple of their own, through McMulkin and E. Kuchel...

KI Netball Association representative coordinator Sarah Kay said netball played an important role in country South Australia.
And since its inception in 1936, the Country Championships had played a significant part in promoting the sport within the regional community.
The annual netball competition was the largest netball event held in SA, with nearly 1000 players from 26 country associations competing, ranging from 11 and Under through to seniors.
