🦟 Japanese Encephalitis Virus Detected in Mosquitos in Monto πŸ”Ž

North Burnett Regional Council has been informed by Queensland Health of the detection of Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) in Mosquitos in the Monto area following routine surveillance testing.

Mosquito numbers can increase after wet and warm weather, which the North Burnett like much of Queensland, has experienced this year. This means there is an increased risk of JEV infection. The most effective way to prevent mosquito-borne diseases is to avoid mosquito bites. Those at risk are recommended to get vaccinated against JEV.

People most at risk include those who work at or live near a piggery, including farm workers, veterinarians, and others who care for pigs. JEV can only be spread by the bite of an infected mosquito.

Mosquitoes become infected with JEV after they bite infected pigs or wading birds. After a person is bitten by an infected mosquito, it usually takes 5 to 15 days for the first symptoms to appear. JEV does not spread directly between people.

If you're bitten by an infected mosquito, you may experience mild flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, or no symptoms at all. Severe cases of JEV can cause swelling in the brain, with sudden onset of severe headaches, neck stiffness, confusion, convulsions, paralysis or even a coma. If you are concerned about any of these symptoms, you should seek medical attention immediately.

Mosquitoes bite at any time of the day, but some species are most active at dusk and dawn.

Simple steps to prevent mosquito bites include:
βœ… applying effective insect repellents that contain DEET, Picaridin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus to exposed skin and reapplying as directed by the manufacturer
βœ… wearing loose, light-coloured clothing to cover up arms, legs and feet
βœ… using insecticide sprays, insecticide-based vapour dispensing units and mosquito coils, if outdoors in a well-ventilated area
βœ… ensuring proper screening in tents or sleeping under a mosquito net when camping to prevent mosquitoes from entering.

For more information about JEV and a full list of those eligible for the vaccine, please visit the Queensland Health website.

A full list of JEV vaccine service providers is also available on the Queensland Health website.
