Firefighters are battling to contain a large bushfire that has now torn through more than 400 hectares of land in the Channel region since Tuesday.

More than 80 firefighters from both the Tasmania Fire Service and Parks and Wildlife are working to get on top of the blaze, with the help of 10 firefighting aircraft.

The TFS say their current focus is on constructing and consolidating containment lines to limit the fire's spread ahead of the forecast fire weather next week.

A Smoke Alert remains in effect for Margate, Snug, Kettering and surrounding areas, along with several Advice fire warnings for the region.

A Charter Hall managed fund has splashed out $50.25 million on the 2022-built Howrah shopping centre, which includes a Coles, Priceline and a McDonald's drive-thru.

The sale process reportedly attracted "significant investor interest" with over 350 enquiries.

After two separate pipe bursts flooded Hobart businesses earlier this month, TasWater has started work to replace ageing water mains under Liverpool and Murray streets.

The project will focus on upgrading two 150mm sections of the main between Harrington and Murray streets and Collins and Liverpool streets.

One section of the water main being replaced is a relic from the 1940s, making it over 80-years-old.

TasWater say most of the work will be done at night to keep disruptions to a minimum, but motorists should expect some delays during the day.

A group of Restore Lake Pedder activists have tipped a wheelbarrow full of rubble outside Hydro Tasmania's office in Hobart, starting a week of action in protest of upgrades to the Edgar Dam.

The activists say the Hydro dam, which provides around 13% of the state's annual energy needs, should be decommissioned so the lake can be restored to its "spectacular and unique" natural level.

However, the state government says the $21m upgrades to strengthen the dam are necessary for the state's future energy security and renewable energy status.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff has seized on the Hobart Hurricanes’ Big Bash win to ramp up the push for a new stadium at Macquarie Point.

Rockliff said it was a “shame” thousands of fans missed out on the win because of Bellerive’s limited capacity, saying a new stadium would have “filled to the brink” and given the local economy a boost.

"10 minutes after that game, there will be 23,000 people either walking to their hotels or walking to Salamanca or walking to local hospitality venues," he said.

Northern Independents Miriam Beswick and Rebekah Pentland argued the opposite to Rockliff, saying Bellerive “can more than hold its own as a venue for premium sporting events”.

Parts of Tasmania's south are on high alert for damaging winds this morning as a "cold front embedded in a strong westerly flow" moves over the state.

The BOM issued a severe weather warning late yesterday for the Upper Derwent Valley, South East and parts of the Western and Central Plateau Forecast Districts.

A young European man has been discharged from hospital after falling from a cliff on the Tasman Peninsula and into the ocean on Sunday.

The man in his 20s and his partner veered off the Mount Brown walking track when they slipped and plunged into the water.

While the woman managed to swim back to shore, the man was swept out to sea.

A rescue helicopter and local police were dispatched to assist in the search, but it was a Pennicott Wilderness tour boat that ultimately reached the man approximately 200m from the shore, before he was flown by the rescue chopper to the RHH with suspected hypothermia.
