Gundagai and surrounds will have a brand new newspaper with a weekly print edition, page and free website.

Newspaper publishers Matthew and Nyssa Stadtmiller of Harden are pleased to announce that they will be offering the community a brand new paper in 2024.

They will have a seasoned and hard-working Journalist heading up the news room and she will bring an enormous amount of experience to the paper with her deep connections and relationships within the community. She will continue to foster the style of media that Gundagai residents love and will also bring new ideas to a new team.

The success of the Gundagai Times will come through the community’s ability to partner with the paper and for businesses to entrust their hard earned dollar with an independent family business with strong ties to the area. By advertising with the Times, businesses will be seen across our vast local network including, Junee, Coota, Harden-Murrumburrah and Yass.

Nyssa said, “It’s a really exciting time for us. Our first paper, The Twin Town Times, which covers Harden-Murrumburrah celebrates 10 years in January since its first edition came out on January 15 2014. To add a fifth major township and masthead to our family business is excellent timing. When the opportunity arose it became clear that our family business had to expand. We are excited to work with such an experienced Journalist and we have pushed the button on a new paper for Gundagai and surrounds. I’m looking forward to the first edition.”

Matt said, “I’ve always liked the idea of having a paper in Gundagai with its rich heritage and history, and when the ability to provide one arose, we jumped at it.
We couldn’t and wouldn’t have done this while the paper was being run by another independent. It’s now been announced that it will no longer be in local or regional ownership hands. Small communities must determine their own future. It’s time to jump in, it’s like helping out a neighbour. My family history goes back more than 150 years in the region and with Gundagai’s determination for independence and great opportunities for storytelling, I look forward to helping produce a new product. If residents want a local paper written by the people for the people and which is run in a family business style with truly local connections, then we are the paper for you. Our new Journalist is excited to be part of this new masthead, delivering news for Gundagai and surrounding villages and we will grow the paper with her in a collaborative approach.”

Matthew, Nyssa and their team currently produce weekly newspapers which include the towns of Yass, Harden-Murrumburrah, Junee and Coota. Each paper produces hyper-local content mixed with much loved contributed content from valuable organisations. They partner with local photographers and they provide relevant government news from a state and federal level. They focus on telling the areas’ history while also living in the moment.
Each major town they focus on has its own page and Website which are free to access. This will bring Gundagai news in to a modern era.

The team at Matthew and Nyssa’s papers comprises 10 employees in various roles and a long list of contributors and helpers who help ensure that each major town and the surrounding villages gets to have their voice on the important issues which matter to them.

To keep up to date with what we have in store for Gundagai and surrounds, like our page and we will keep you informed.

We have more announcements coming soon. Stay tuned.

BRINDABELLA ROAD SAFETY UPGRADES TO GO AHEAD
- Media Release.

The Albanese Labor Government remains committed to its $20 million Brindabella Road safety upgrades as reconfirmed in the independent strategic review of the Infrastructure Investment Program.
Residents have called for improvements to the Brindabella Road with a long-running advocacy campaign by Snowy Valleys Council, and previous Tumut Council, alongside groups like the Brindabella Road The Economic Link (BRTEL).
Motorists who travel on the Brindabella Road will benefit from vital upgrades on priority sections, from the Brindabella Valley to the ACT border.
This project is on top of the $17.4 million confirmed in the October 2022-23 Budget, bringing the total Australian Government commitment to $37.4 million.
The funding announcement ends a long-running advocacy campaign by Snowy Valleys Council, and before it Tumut Council, alongside groups like the Brindabella Road The Economic Link (BRTEL).
The independent strategic review has reaffirmed that the Liberals and Nationals did not have the appropriate planning and informed costings in place to deliver the projects they promised in media releases.
A blow out of 150 to 800 projects, with an estimated $33 billion in known cost pressures – projects that were simply not ready for Commonwealth investment.
That is why the Albanese Government is committed to delivering the infrastructure Australia needs, creating jobs and growing the economy, while not increasing pressure on inflation.
As part of the Government’s commitment to improving the safety of roads across Eden-Monaro, local councils will also have access to significantly increased road funding.
Roads to Recovery funding will gradually increase from $500 million to $1 billion per year, and the Road Black Spot funding will gradually increase from $110 million to $150 million per year.
The Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program and the Bridges Renewal Program will be merged into a new, Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program – with funding increasing to $200 million per year, a $50 million boost.
This will strengthen the capacity of local councils across Eden-Monaro to maintain and improve local roads, which have been impacted by extreme weather and increased demand.
The Roads to Recovery consultation process will be undertaken in early 2024 to ensure that any changes to the formula work for local governments.
Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said, “The Albanese Government is committed to delivering infrastructure that builds Australia and improves lives. To do this, we need an infrastructure program that is fit for purpose, fiscally responsible and above all, deliverable.
“We are delivering infrastructure that creates jobs and helps wages grow, and makes our communities better connected and more livable.”
Kristy McBain Member for Eden-Monaro said, ““People that travel on the Brindabella Road have campaigned for decades to get this work off the ground – which is why we remain committed to delivering these improvements”.
“Councils across Eden-Monaro have called for more support to strengthen their capacity to maintain our local road networks – we have listened and are doing just that.
“Upgrading Brindabella Road will allow ACT residents and international tourists to get to the Snowy Valleys more easily, cutting 66 km off the alternate journey via the Hume Highway.
“With so much happening in the region to boost tourism, including the Sculpture Trail and multiple new bike tracks, the Snowy Valleys is becoming a popular weekend getaway for Canberra residents.
“By making the journey safer and much quicker, we have the opportunity to open up the region to far more visitors.”

An Italian court has convicted and sentenced more than 200 people of crimes including criminal association, extortion and bribery in what has been described as Italy’s largest mafia trial in three decades.
The verdicts mark the end of a three-year “maxi trial” held in a high-security courtroom in the southern Calabria region built specifically to hold up to 350 defendants, accommodate 400 lawyers and hear from the 900 witnesses providing testimony against an extensive network of members belonging to the notorious ’Ndrangheta.

Specially built courtroom in Calabria heard evidence of ruthless tactics of ’Ndrangheta crime syndicate

FRIDAY FLASHBACK PHOTO!

A building in Wagga that has recently been in the news is Foxborough Hall. This grand old dame is not only one of the city's most historic homes, but is also one of the oldest standing, and is a rare tangible reminder of our city's heritage.

The Foxborough Hall seen here, located in Hardy Avenue, was the distinguished residence of the Honorable James Gormly, one of Wagga's illustrious pioneers, settling in the town c. 1854.

Foxborough Hall was originally an Estate, comprising 40 acres (16 hectares), purchased by publican Thomas Fox in 1856 for the sum of £40. On the block, Fox built the original Foxborough Hall residence, a brick building with two wings, standing atop a hill with a commanding view across the township of Wagga. He named the property 'Foxborough' after his wife's parent's home in Ireland.

Following Fox's death in 1859, the estate was purchased by another publican, Thomas Byrnes, who then sold it to Thomas Darlow, co-founder of the Wagga Wagga Advertiser newspaper.

In July 1882, James Gormly became the new owner of the property, having purchased it from Darlow. Coincidentally, like Fox, James also had links with Foxborough in Ireland. He was born to Patrick Gormly, a grazier, and his wife Mary (née Docray) at Foxborough Hall, Elphin, County Roscommon, Ireland in 1836.

It must have been a happy day when James and his family moved into the sprawling mansion built by Fox.

There, the family settled, until disaster struck.

In the early hours of the morning of Thursday 10 February 1887, a catastrophic fire broke out, and locals woke to the sound of the dreaded clang of the town's fire bell, and a lurid reflection in the sky from flames.

The cause of the fire? A lit kerosene lamp. Luckily James and his family escaped, but none of their possessions survived. The Wagga Wagga Advertiser that day, ran a story which read:

"It was utterly impossible to save anything. Mr Gormly deeply regrets the loss of his sporting library, the accumulation of years, while his son has lost many charts and other documents by which he hoped to pass his examination in the Civil Service. Mr. Louis Gormly, who resides close to his father's house, fears that his mother will deeply grieve over the destruction of many little mementoes of a lost little one, so cherished by a sorrowing mother."

It was a day that Wagga lost 'one of the old landmarks of Wagga.'

But James rebuilt.

On the same spot the original Foxborough Hall had stood, James built an attractive two-storey home for his family.

Amazingly, another fire in July 1893 resulted in the stables being burnt down, but the new homestead was luckily undamaged.

In 1913, James began selling off parts of the now 80 acre estate. By the following year, ownership of the home had passed to his son Robert James Ernest, who then subdivided a large part of the remaining estate in 1922.

In 1926, Robert sold the Foxborough Hall residence and an adjoining 20 acres of land to the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary. Costing £8,000, the residence and became a temporary hospital, accommodating between 12 and 14 patients who were treated there during the construction of Lewisham Hospital.

Later, the home and grounds became, once again, a private residence.

Now, in 2023, there are plans to turn this historic landmark into a childcare centre. If the walls of this old house could talk, what stories they would tell.
