Rising sea levels and extreme weather are threatening ecosystems worldwide, including Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. According to the IPCC, the global sea level hit a record high in 2023. Award-winning Australian travel insurer, Insure&Go, has identified seven lesser-known destinations at risk. These places offer unforgettable experiences while allowing travellers to support conservation efforts and raise climate awareness.

Tuvalu, South Pacific

Tucked between Hawaii and Australia, Tuvalu is one of the least-visited countries on Earth. This tiny nation offers a rare glimpse into authentic island life, untouched by mass tourism, but rising seas could make it uninhabitable in our lifetime. Tuvalu faces the threat of rising sea levels, which could submerge the entire nation.

- How to get there: Via Fiji (Nadi International Airport) with Fiji Airways.

- Best time to visit: April to October, perfect for snorkelling, lagoon tours and cultural festivals.

Australian Walking Holidays has announced a unique, guided trek along the iconic Larapinta Trail in the Northern Territory, running from 30 April to 7 May 2026. The trip will be led by adventurer, author, and inspirational speaker Laura Waters and promises more than just a hike—it’s an immersive experience designed to connect walkers with nature and themselves.

Meet Your Guide: Laura Waters

Laura Waters is no stranger to transformation through travel. After walking away from a corporate life, she hiked 3,000km down New Zealand’s Te Araroa Trail—solo from day two. That journey became the subject of her award-winning memoir, Bewildered, and sparked a new path as a writer, speaker, and explorer.

Since then, she’s hiked the Bibbulmun Track in WA, kayaked 2,400km down the Murray River, and published Ultimate Walks & Hikes Australia. Her adventures are deeply personal, and her storytelling reflects hard-won lessons about resilience, vulnerability, and the strength found in solitude.
