Discover the Untold Story of Banaban Origins

Banaban Cultural Identity is the third book in the Banaban Study Series.
For years, scholars and colonial administrators have linked the Banabans to the I-Kiribati race, shaping the prevailing societal and political landscape of the Banaban people. Nevertheless, true historical accounts and origins have remained closely guarded secrets. Te Aka clan has been notoriously secretive about its identity, keeping its heritage hidden from outsiders.
This book sheds light on a history of resilience, culture, and distinct identity through groundbreaking archaeological findings and long-guarded traditions of the Te Aka clan.
Whether you’re passionate about Pacific Island history, Indigenous identity, or the strength of cultural heritage, Banaban Cultural Identity is a must-read.

It was lovely to catch up with a fellow Banaban friend, Scott Laritz, who was born on Banaba. We last caught up and Ken's funeral. Scott, his mother Marion, and brothers Geoffrey Laritz and Michael were part of the HOMECOMING trip to Banaba I organised in 1997 (27 years ago) and featured in the Jeremy Cooper BBC documentary "Coming Home to Banaba." The documentary is now available on YouTube https://youtu.be/wIB3nOH8r_c?si=0rN2bZfsyIwNuIbx

Well done my friend, and well deserved.

The world’s highest mountain can bring out the best in people – and the worst. We usually only read about the bravery, courage and sacrifice of mountaineers who risk life and limb to achieve excellence - but there are others - the charlatans, conmen and bullies who sacrifice others to reach the ...

Congratulations Robert Smith. “Knights, Flights & Plights” is the latest book by Robert Smith (UK), an International Development consultant. It offers a broad view of Banaban history and examines possible economic opportunities for the community in the future. It is now available as an E-Book on Amazon.

"The social history of the Banaban people of Ocean Island (now Banaba Island in Kiribati) is already well-documented, and the author provides a readable overview, extending it with economic analysis that documents how these people, once called the richest in the South Pacific, are now living in relative poverty on Rabi Island in Fiji. The striking economic contrast between today’s Banabans and Nauruans is explored, showing how colonial decision-making forced each race down different economic pathways. Despite many being second or third-generation Fijian-born, they remain fiercely Banaban, with strong emotional ties back to Banaba Island.
Australia’s economic success is partly due to receiving Banaba’s phosphate at cost, but Banaba Island remains a mining wreck. The author asserts that Australia can and should help remove the mining equipment, which blights the island’s chance of recovery."

“Knights, Plights & Flights” documents three Pacific island communities living in Fiji. Nearly all current community members were born in Fiji, and for many, generations of their descendants were born in Fiji as well. These people are outsiders however - third class citizens, landless, with limi...

"A great insight into business from a woman's perspective"

This is a brilliant insight into what it's really like to run a multi-million dollar company, the driving passions and tough decisions, particularly from a woman's point of view. Stacey's business grew out of love and emotional commitment, but she needed to have an incisive brain and nerves of steel to drive her enterprise forward, juggle different aspects of her life and then fight her corner when the sharks started to circle.
A very honest book that made me think about the whole production chain and how every spending decision we make has significant consequences.
