APPLICATIONS IN THE 2025 THORNTON YOUNG AWARD OPEN NOW!
After a massively successful first year for the Thornton Young Award, Lindsay Waddington Music, in partnership with the Country Music Association of Australia Inc (CMAA), is thrilled to announce the commencement of the 2025 Thornton Young Award for the second year - named in honour of two of Australia’s country music pioneering greats Barry Thornton and Brian Young.
The inaugural winner of the 2024 Thornton Young Award winner, Paul Ricketts Music, who hails from the South Burnett in Queensland, has more than lived up to the organisers’ expectations and has been an exemplary representative of the spirit of this award, winning hearts all over the country for his enthusiasm, commitment, integrity, creativity, and talent.
Ricketts says of his year as the very first winner of this prestigious award “Winning the Thornton Young Award has been a great boost to my career in Australian country music. It would have taken years of knocking on doors to meet even half the people I’ve met since receiving the award. The guidance and support that I’ve received from LWM House has really opened my eyes to what lies ahead and what important things I need to focus on. Waddo and Reegan took the time to get to know me and my situation and have been instrumental in helping me formulate a plan that will help with future releases and more exposure, and on top of this the CMAA has got on board and really backed the initiative. I’m very grateful for being a recipient of an award that is all for celebrating our Australian culture through song.”
The objective of the Thornton Young Award is to nurture the talent of an Australian bush/heritage artist and promote and celebrate songs that embody the spirit and essence of Australia.
The Thornton Young Award aims to shine a spotlight on the unique narratives, landscapes, and cultural heritage of Australia through the powerful medium of country music. The award seeks to preserve and promote the most traditional and genuinely Australian form of country music.
The prize package:
• Lindsay Waddington Music will fund a new recording of an original song to master stage, at LWM House studio on the Gold Coast (QLD), produced by Lindsay Waddington and featuring some of Australia’s finest country session musicians.
• Lindsay Waddington Music will also produce and fund a studio video clip for the single and will arrange the distribution to radio.
• A unique trophy shall be awarded to the winner of the Thornton Young Award, courtesy of the CMAA.
• In addition, the CMAA will provide a complimentary one-year professional membership of the CMAA and free entry in the Country Music Awards of Australia (Golden Guitar Awards) for that eligibility year.
• The winner of the Thornton Young Award will be formally announced and awarded during the “Back to the Bush” concert in Bicentennial Park Tamworth 2025.
• Following the release of the awarded single, the winner will be offered a performance opportunity in Tamworth for the Country Music Festival on the Back to the Bush concert plus other opportunities that may arise.
Applications for the 2025 Thornton Young Award are open NOW, and close 18th October 2024. The winner will be announced Monday 9th December. Further information and entry form can be found at www.thorntonyoungaward.au
