“He’s just not that into me?!” 😲

I stare at my actor friend in complete shock! She’s striking AF - like I see grown men walk into glass doors trying to get a glimpse. 🤣

“And I think he has another just like me on the side!” 🤬

Ahhh men! Lol!

We are not talking bros! Nope!

We are talking agents. 🎬

If your agent just isn’t that into you…or has a lot of the same just like you on their books…which is why you never go out on auditions…

…it might be time to look for different horizons!

Why??

Your relationship with your agent is THE most important relationship you will ever have (don’t tell your partner I said that)!!

You want (make that need) a power player in your corner who is so motivated by your success…they will empower you to actually succeed!

Ask yourself this very simple question.

Does my agent know my 1-3 year professional plan?

And…do they believe in that plan? I.e believe in you !!

Solid relationships are built on empowering and supporting one another and this is especially true for the agent/client relationship.

So if you’re agent doesn’t know your goals, book a meeting asap and get on the same page about your success!

Sarah: (😁) I’m an actor.

Amy: (🤮) good for you doing that thing I did in high school…I’ve grown up since then!

Like ahhhrrrrrrr right?!!

What is the deal with peeps looking down on acting peeps? I just don’t get it.

📣 here’s a little info for those at the back.

ACTING is a career. There are a f**k ton of gigs out there and the need for more content is only getting bigger! Across the entire planet. Unlike a lot of other industries that are so archaic and dying.

Secondly, not all actors are artsy fartys! Many are legit professionals who take pride in what they do and to be honest…when things are swinging in the right direction, HAVE THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD! (Jealous much, Amy??)

Thirdly, I can guarantee that Sarah is honouring her purpose…her true calling…why she exists…

Whereas Amy is honouring…well just being a b**ch actually! Pretty sure Insurance Agent was never her calling.

So show some respect to actors who are living their purpose and NOT GIVING UP! 🤩 No matter how many Amy’s are in their way!

What’s the #1 worst thing for an actor?

Post audition anxiety. It’s a real b**tch!

Which makes sense because you’ve just spent so much time and energy on the audition, then you walk away..without closure! 🙉

Ahhh…it’s like going on a blind date and then being ghosted.

Continuously!! 👻

Here’s the thing though. You can’t change the way auditions work so what you need to do is change the way you work.

Instead of thinking about every single detail like an 80 year old trying to memorise their driving eye test exam, know this. You cannot change anything that happened in that room. So try this.

Practise gratitude. ✨ Say aloud how grateful you are that you got to audition. How freaking awesome you got in front of the casting director. How bloody fortunate you get to live your dreams (while Jana is punching in everyday still trying to figure out her purpose). And finally, how incredible that every audition is bringing you closer to your dream role.

This is called post self-love.
Every needs some of that in their lives.

Now matter the outcome, walk away with your fabulous head held high and as Jay-Z says…on to the next one!

👋Happy Sunday Awesome Actor!!

Hope you’re enjoying your sleep in, Netflix, yogalattes, Starbucks, hungover Macca’s or whatever you do on a Sunday?!

I’m gonna hit you with this and leave you be…

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝?

Waaait whhattt?! ‘You can’t just hit me with this and then depart.

That Q is like asking does G exist or what is the meaning of life!!’

Okayyyy! I’ll stay a while.

Here’s the deal.

You give yourself to people.

And through you > people can learn ALOT about themselves.

In fact, they can change their entire truth just by your performance high-lighting stories that go against the mainstream.

Actors allow others to debate, dissect life and stand for something.

It’s a pretty big f**king responsibly! Actually. 🙉

On that note, imma bout to order a Grande green tea latte, extra hot, extra foam, extra syrup and a lemon the side. Unlike L Gaga…I don’t need to change my barista! ☕️

Happy Sunday!! 💃

I’m gonna get semi emotional here because I’ve seen so many actors think they have to be oh-so-f**king-perfect in auditions, in class, on set…❌❌❌

…when truth be told being imperfect is where you grow and this is where the magic lies.

Perfectionism is a nasty little vice…think of all the things you’ve been told to stay away…because they will mess you up…

…well perfectionism is the Evil Knieval of them all!

If you’re not raising your hand in your acting class, if you’re not submitting to auditions, if you freak out at the 11th hour and bail out of a booked gig because you feel IMPERFECT…

You’ll never make it.

Yep had to be blunt AF but that’s the truth.

You have to push yourself over the edge without knowing how good everything will turn out…so you evolve into one of the greatest actors (even if deeply flawed) this generation has ever seen!

Today Keep Moving. Be Imperfect. Lean In. Never Stop. 🤍

You’re not gonna like this…but it is crucial you treat your acting as your business. 🙈

I hear the moans and groans. ‘But i wanna focus on my acting. Not the business marketing side of it.’ B.O.R.I.N.G !!

Umm..let’s just get one thing straight right now. If you are an actor, you have a personal brand which means you are a business. (Sips 🍵 ). You’re a CEO! Welcome to the club!

Ok, now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s talk about your business.

All businesses need a marketing and promotion plan in place to succeed.

Are you getting your headshots…showreel…awesomesss…in front of the right peeps?! Anyone and everyone who can move your career forward? How are you doing this? By randomly showing up when your Netflix binge sesh is done? Or in a way this is intentional and powerful?

I’m doing a LIVE on FB that goes way into this. Make sure you’re inside our new The Actors Bungalow Facebook Group!

📣PUT THAT SCRIPT DOWN & LISTEN UP !!

Being an actor is tough.

You are faced with rejection (more than most), self doubt and the feeling that someone else who booked the role is better than you.

Then you go down a spiral of self defeat and the roller coaster begins all over again.

I've worked with 1000's of actors so I get it!

The successful actor follows this advice and I want you to really take these on board FROM TODAY onwards, ok!

👉MASTER what you do no matter what.

When you continue to learn and become the expert at what you do, you continue to grow. Growth shakes down feelings of insecurities and opens you up to a new world of positive mindset.

Implement growth learning into your daily life. It can be something as simple as grabbing a dramatic script for 10 mins and changing it up into a comedic scene. This small exercise will help you take direction better in the casting room.

👉STOP comparing yourself to others and getting caught up in the anxiety.

Look, we're all on our own path and a role you had your eye on might be better suited for someone else but your time will come - you are an actor for a reason so you must keep going.

Not everyone wants an extrovert walking into the room (unless the script calls for it). Embody the unique brilliance that is you and only you. Find something daily that you can compliment yourself on. It’s a small but powerful tip that can help you overcome comparisonitis!

Get it!

Ouch! I thought so. 😳

Now before you run for the hills screaming ‘I’m an actor…save those f**king mission statements for the corporate jungle…’

Let me ask you this.

What do you wish your audience knew about you?

I get it. You’re talented AF. You’re a shining star in a dark galaxy far far away moving at light speed to enter the realm of big, bright lights here on planet earth.

But what makes you, YOU?

What sets you apart from another actor?

Here’s an example.

BadAss Actor Mission Statement

“I am here to stand out. Be authentic. Be kind and exceed all expectations with my performance so I inspire my audience.”

Ok, that was good. I think I might use that one for myself. 😉

When you meet with a director, walk on set, show up at rehearsal…with a bold mission statement like this at the forefront of your mind, it provides a powerful reference for who you are as an actor. Full stop.

Refer to it when you wake up in the morning and when you go to bed at night.

The more you embed this into your subconscious mind (the one that actually matters the most), the more you organically become this person and succeed in your purpose.

So get out your pens, paper, laptop, phone…whatever takes ya fancy…and write your mission statement today. Keep it super simple. Whatever comes to mind.

DO NOT JUDGE YOURSELF.

This is your mission statement and your mission statement alone.

Have fun with it! 🤩

Music, title cards, SFX…SUCK for your showreel. 🙈

I was riffing with one of our upcoming guest speakers (US casting agent) who told me her biggest pet peeve with show reels is not being able to focus on the actors performance
because the reel has so many bells and whistles, she’s expecting a magician to pop out of the screen.🎩

Keep it simple. It is you, the camera and your choices (ohhh and your scene partner (if required). Yes, wear something appropriate or use a prop that helps you in the scene but don’t let that overtake from YOU.

This is your chance to shine. It’s your moment to have the casting director fall in love and become mesmerised by what they are witnessing first hand, then rubbing their hands together
because finally they’ve found their lead for the new … series (just saying)!

You want to keep it snappy - respect the casting directors time. Do you really think they have those few seconds to spare so they can numbly watch your opening title cards flash with fancy fonts and goop. NO.

Keep it simple stupid. Not you! That’s a saying but it applies in this case.

See, casting directors are very clear on what they want. And what they want is simple yet powerful.

Make sense? NO FRILLS. 🎬

You don’t hear that enough so I wanted to remind you.

It takes guts to face loads of rejection.

It takes determination to put your life second to acting.

It takes conviction to believe everyday in your dreams.

It takes drive to show up and deliver a stellar performance.

Keep going.

That one day is happening sooner than you think.

Your job is to bring a scripted character to life...but what if you can’t find the level of depth required.

Anyone can act. Yep! Said it. Imitating a character is not hard.

Bringing to life a three-dimensional character full of depth and emotion is. Otherwise it becomes a caricature if nothing else.

The first question you must always ask is:

Who Am I?

Ask yourself this question (as you - a living, breathing human being) and then with the same intensity you found in your own being, begin to plant your backstory, memories and traits of your character.

But what if I don’t have enough information for my character.

Create it! Research it. Fill your mind with images of how this person lives on a daily basis. What choices brought him or her to this very point in their life?

This is the fun part of acting. Because you’re not acting. You’re bringing to life another human being.

There is nothing more powerful for an audience to witness that!

Nerves, nerves, nerves. You’ve just had your audition. You are now a bumbling babble of nerves as soon as you walk out t...

Nerves, nerves, nerves.

You’ve just had your audition.

You are now a bumbling babble of nerves as soon as you walk out the audition room. 😰 More so than when you walked in.

Because you know what’s gonna happen.

Every time your phone rings, your heart goes into excited meltdown!

Or you feel oh so f**king sick to the stomach.

Then the level of disappointment that stabs at your heart when you see it’s your mom’s number on the screen and answer the call is probably your best acting performance to date.

Then you play the ‘what if’ game.

👉 What if I’d taken direction more thoughtfully.
👉 What if I’d dressed up my character.
👉 What if I thought I was great but they’re now laughing behind my back (they’re not by the way).
👉 What if I was older, younger, prettier, smarter…blah blah blah.

Another day goes by. Another day of silence. And so on.

You start talking yourself into how maybe the role wasn’t for you.

And I’m here to tell you something that is a game changer for your belief system.

Always operate by these words - ‘this or something better’.

You might have thought it was the role of a lifetime but the Universe has bigger plans…much bigger plans.

So instead of filling your head with silence, fill it with this mantra and notice a major difference in how you feel.

This is your big acting sis reminding you the things you do today are shaping your tomorrow.

Everyday you are writing your story.

👉 Always take that new opportunity.

👉 Say f**k YESSS to that exciting adventure.

👉 Show up for yourself in your acting work and create the life of your dreams.

It’s your life. Your story. Your memoir.

What if page 1 started today?

One of my clients booked her dream role and it was the worst day of her life?? 😣

‘How is that even possible?’ I asked.

Stunned. ‘Others would have thrown their sweet ol’ granny in the pool for that role.’

Between sniffles, I finally got it out of her.

The language spoken on-set is a whole lotta vibes if you’re a newbie and it can be very intimidating.

Even a call sheet can look code for some foreign spy agency.

So here’s a breakdown to get started on basic acronyms you will hear on set and you might get brownie points if you don’t look like a deer in headlights.

The last one is heard a lot on Australian sets. 😮

Can you think of anymore to add to this list?

“I’m about ready to give up!” said every actor ever!

Look, there will be days, especially after a tough audition, bad rehearsal or on-set nightmare…when you think ‘why did acting have to choose me???

Of all the people in the world, why was I born with the creative stick for wanting to make people feel something through performance?

Why couldn’t I just be happy being a f**king accountant or something?”

We’ve all been there.

So how do you stay motivated?

Million dollar question.

👉JOURNAL OUT YOUR WHY!

Your why is your North Star.

It is your guiding light when the road gets dark and misty.

WHY do you want to be a successful actor?

For fame. Fortune. Respect.

It doesn’t matter what your why is. It’s personal and relative to you and only you.

✔️So what if you want to walk red carpets and have your pic taken for the rest of your life?

✔️So what if you want to earn residual income over and over for a stellar once in a lifetime performance?

✔️So what if you want to finally say to mean girl Jane ‘I made it b**tch!’ 😆

It’s your why. Not mine. Not hers. Not his. Not theirs.

So journal it out today and everyday you get a little down in the dumps.

Comment with an ✨ if this resonated with you!

Actors routinely deal with rejection. 🤬🤬🤬 It's part of the job but hey...it doesn't mean it doesn't sting, right?!

What can make it easier is taking it all in your stride as a learning experience and developing the coping strategies to respond afterwards. 🤔

Here are 3 ways to deal with rejection.

👉It's not personal.
It’s just not. Just because you weren't chosen for this particular part doesn't mean you are a terrible actor. It just means that the better part you are meant for is just around the corner.
On a side note, if you do want to throw a tantrum and take it personally, do that and then shake it off as you move on to your next audition.

👉 Focus on 3 things you did well (such as remembered your lines, took redirection well, connected with the casting agent, showed up on time!) right after your audition. This gets you into a positive headspace that can help soften the blow.

👉Be practical.
Don't think that success will be instantaneous. You can't book every audition, ok. Realise you are an industry and other people need the work too. It's just the way it works.

🌟And just remember that every 'no' is getting you closer to that 'YES’!
