Our Story
Down To Earth Horsemanship was formed by Dennis H. McIntyre in 1993 and has since been developed into a comprehensive, living, organic, dynamic, evolving approach to horsemanship. Rather than focus on mechanical methodologies of ‘do this and then do that then you get this’, it is based upon a living awareness and relaxed conscious attention of you, your environment and the horse. By learning to be present and conscious of your horse you will become alert to the ways and means by which a horse communicates and in turn you will be able to develop your own, unique ability to communicate with your horse in a way so that a calm, collected and relaxed relationship can develop.
From this relationship you will then be able to speak to your horse and request him/her to move and act in a way that you desire. This is an uncomplicated approach to horsemanship as we go direct to the core of a matter. We want a horse to act and respond to us in an easy, relaxed manner and be apart of a cooperative relationship. The simplest means to achieve that is to communicate concisely through the presence of being.
What does this mean? If we look at where all communication originates from we can trace it back to our inherent selves, the living, sentient being who is the witness of this ever changing world. It is the real ‘my’ we refer to when we say ‘my body’, ‘my mind’, ‘my intelligence’. That I is the source of our communication and the more we develop self awareness and evolve our consciousness, the more we can communicate clearly and concisely in a way in which not only our horse will appreciate, but all other living entities will respond in kindness.
The true nature of the self is love and from that space of living awareness we can generate a type of communication that is inherently beneficial. Now, how does that look? It isn’t ethereal in the sense that it is still manifest through our bodily actions and speech and may, for the most part, look just like the actions of other horse-persons. The key difference is the nature of the space in which it is generated from; therefore, rather than teaching our students the mechanics of horsemanship, we focus on teaching the correct awareness, using objective indicators, whereby the student’s mechanics will follow and develop naturally in their own unique way.
