For more than 500 years, the German Purity Law, or Reinheitsgebot, has been a symbol of tradition, quality and authenticity in brewing. First enacted in 1516 as a way of ensuring that what goes into beer is natural, many German breweries still adhere to the law today, and for beer enthusiasts, it's a mark of purity and craftmanship. In a conversation with Beer & Brewer, German beer curator Philipp Hockenberger broke down the Reinheitsgebot, innovating creatively within its boundaries, and its role today.

With millions of tonnes of bread wasted around the world every year, independent brewery Local Brewing Co. developed EcoCrumb as a way of reducing food waste, substituting one of the key brewing ingredients with a bread-based grain. With a $400k grant from the Coles Nurture Fund, the brewery will now expand production of its brewing innovation, which turns surplus bread into beer. With the funding, Local Brewing Co. will invest in further research and equipment, allowing the brewery to produce 100 times the current volume of EcoCrumb and make it more accessible to Australia’s craft brewers.

Local Brewing Co. has been awarded a $400k grant to expand production of its brewing innovation, which turns surplus bread into beer.

Back in the 1500s a refreshing cloudy wheat beer, Hefeweizen, was born in Bavaria. Brewed with half wheat malt and half Pilsner malt, this light-coloured hazy beer was way different from anything else around at the time, hence its popularity and growth. The yeast strain, along with the high amount of wheat, made this beer quite unique, and very popular. In the latest Recipe of the Week, we smash out a classic Dunkelweizen, which is a dark, more malty Hefeweizen.

The Hefeweizen is one of the oldest and most classic hazy’s of all time, so let’s gaze into the distant haze.

Few breweries can say they’ve brewed the most popular craft beer in Australia, and fewer still can say they’ve done it three years in a row. But for Mountain Culture, Status Quo Pale Ale has once again taken out top honours in the GABS Hottest 100 poll. This three-peat is no small feat. Only one other brewery, Feral Brewing Company, has ever pulled it off, and it’s been a decade since it last happened. The win certainly cements Mountain Culture’s place in Australian brewing history, and this week Beer & Brewer sat down with Co-founder DJ McCready to find out what it means to be named Australia’s favourite craft beer once again, and what it takes to keep brewing Australia’s most popular beer.

With just five years under its belt, Mountain Culture secured a historic three-peat in the GABS Hottest 100 poll.
