Seth Malacari, the editor of An Unexpected Party, set out to curate a speculative YA fiction to break the mould for what a q***r narrative can be. In an interview for School News Australia, he told Shannon Meyerkort, ‘I wanted to give young readers a more balanced perspective. Romance is cool, if you’re into that, but so is friendship, so is being on your own.’

Take a look at the thoughtful review from Westerly Magazine of The Archipelago of Us by Reneé Pettitt-Schipp. Thank you to Shaeden Berry for the recognition of this powerful memoir.

Our latest review is of ‘The Archipelago of Us: a search for our identity in Australia’s most remote territories’ (Fremantle Press) by Reneé Pettitt-Schipp!

A travel narrative, a memoir and a thought-provoking look at Australia’s complicated history with Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands and the asylum seekers detained there.

'The book is interspersed with visceral and vivid descriptions of the landscape, heady with sensory explorations of the islands themselves. This makes sense given Pettitt-Schipp’s own interpretation of Christmas Island as ‘always trying to return its structure to the earth, covering walls in black mould, filling gutters with fernery’ (29). That ‘black mould’ can be reframed as nature reclaiming its space is a powerful, even delightful, inversion.'
