It's Wrensday - enjoy this male Superb Fairywren in his winter outfit.
during non mating season the males will change their colourful attire for a more camouflage brown, so they don't constantly have to be on the look out for predators.

White-Throated Honeyeater. These pretty little birds are quite prolific in South East Queensland, and I see them a lot around home. They like to feed in the tops of the gum trees and tend to gather in groups

This cute little guy is a male Spotted Pardalote - Image taken at Redwood Park at the base of the Toowoomba Range in QLD Australia, a wonderful conservation park with walking tracks and a picnic ground. There are many species of birds in good numbers - I have added this park to my favourite birding spots and will be visiting regularly.
While I know these birds are around my local area, as I hear them regularly, I have yet to actually see one, as they tend to hang out in the tops of the gum trees.

Long Billed Corella Fernvale - easily recognised by it's long bill, obviously, and the red markings around face and neck, notably the red cut throat mark under the chin.
These birds are quite common in my local area, but I don't often get them to my property so was a nice opportunity to get some shots when a few of them turned up to ravage my corn.

Hi Friends, I'm back after a 6 month hiatus.
I will try and post as often as I can, but my personal life has become more demanding so might not be as much as I used to.

Meanwhile - Happy Wrensday.

By far one of the highlights from our trip to Outback Qld was seeing Budgerigars in the wild. We found a large body of water just off the side of the highway as we were leaving Charlotte Plains - it wasn't very deep but was attracting many species of parrots and waterbirds, including thousands of Budgerigars. Sadly this impromptu wetland will only last a couple of weeks before drying up.

"In the Rain"
Last year I entered these 4 images into the Australian Photographer of the year competition, not expecting too much, as there are a lot of entries in the Nature Category.
Well the results were out today, and I ended in the Top 50.
So I'm feeling a little bit chuffed.

Greater Bluebonnet - Captured at Charlotte Plains (Outback Qld) over Christmas.
This was my first time seeing one of these birds and I only saw it for a few seconds. Luckily I managed to snap a few pictures before it took off. It was with a mate that stayed further back behind more sticks.

These little birds are quite friendly and will actually follow you around to see what you are doing. The proverbial sticky beak.

Just by a exercising a bit of observation, you can see some amazing things.
Recently, I was lucky enough to witness a male Black Shouldered Kite swooping in to mate his partner.
This pair has already raised 1 chick to adulthood earlier this year, and had 3 chicks that had just fledged the nest, but still dependant on their parents.
Given that she has already raised 2 clutches, I completely understand the protests from the female.

Lewin's Honeyeater spotted while out walking.
I had heard the distinctive machine gun call so was on the lookout for this guy. Lucky for me he was in a tree, right beside the road I was walking down.

A Pale Headed Rosella feeding on Dandelion flowers - Fernvale
I spied this beauty feeding on the side of a kangaroo trail and managed to creep within 5m to get this shot. He/she wasn't bothered by my presence and just kept snacking
EDIT - I have been informed, several times, that the w**d is a thistle rather than a dandelion. I can only say that I don’t know w**ds as well as I know birds 😂

Sacred Kingfisher - Fernvale Queensland.
One of Australia's forest dwelling Kingfishers, this little bird does not need to live near a body of water, nor does it specifically eat fish as the name suggests, but mainly dines on insects and crustaceans. They are currently breeding in the local area.

Plum-headed Finch - Captured on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail in Qld last year. I saw the pair several times over a couple of weeks
I haven't seen any in the local area this year so I am guessing they came in early last year before the drought broke looking for food and water.
There was a time when these birds were abundant in the Fernvale area.

Black Shouldered Kite on a dismal afternoon on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail at Fairneyview Qld.
I was playing with slow shutter speed trying to capture the wing motion as seen in the second photo, when the bird gave me a look over its shoulder.
