What do you make of statements like Warren Buffett’s advice to “be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful”? Or Baron Rothschild’s “the time to buy is when there’s blood in the streets”?

How about former Fed Reserve chief Alan Greenspan’s “irrational exuberance”?

These statements all share a common concept, something that most of us possess in our deep thinking, commonsense brain, but sometimes forget amid the short-term noise. These pearls of wisdom all rest on the assumption that mean reversion will ultimately prevail.

My piece in today's Fairfax press.

What does advice from famous investors like Warren Buffett and Baron Rothschild have in common?

For over 6 years now I've released weekly podcasts and emails exploring the idea of Financial Autonomy and gaining choice. The content is informed by the wonderful clients that we get to work with, many of whom are listeners.
I'm constantly learning, and sometimes what you learn contradicts what you thought you knew. This week I wanted to share 3 things I got wrong. There's probably plenty more, but let's start here anyhow.

This week on the Financial Autonomy podcast I chat with the always fun and insightful Glen James, host of the My Millenial Money podcast. Glen and his team have just wrapped up a tour around Australia chatting to the MMM tribe, so I wanted to ask him "what's on peoples minds right now when it comes to the topic of money?" Interest rates were of course on the list, but so to was investment timing, long term goals, and plenty more.

Listener Question - How to Manage Uneven Super Balances Between a Couple

This week's podcast episode arises from a question I received from Daniel around uneven super balances between him and his spouse. Now I don't know Daniel’s full situation and a podcast isn't the place to provide detailed strategy recommendations, however, his question is an issue that many people face where one member of a couple has significantly more super than the other. So this week I thought we’d explore strategies you could use if this is a problem you face.

Pilots do hundreds of hours of training, both upfront and ongoing. They are highly skilled. Yet most of the time all they do is watch the dials and chat about what they did on the weekend. The technology in planes these days in incredible. To the outsider the job might appear easy.

They train a lot for that one instance in their entire career when things don't go to plan, when what was supposed to happen doesn't happen. As passengers we pay to have highly skilled pilots up the front of the plane just in case that one bad day happens to be the day we're in the air.

This morning I was working on a piece around the challenge of doing nothing with your investments, just leaving them alone to let compounding do its thing. Just like the pilot, the value in having a relationship with a financial planner is maybe not enormous most days when investment markets simply tick over. But when you hit times of turmoil, the ability to speak with someone who knows you, your situation, and your goals, holds enormous value. Just like the pilot, your planner doesn't know what the future will bring, but their experience and skill can get you through the storm in the best shape possible.

Receiving an inheritance can often come with plenty of baggage attached. The most obvious is that someone has had to die, usually someone very close to you, for you to be the beneficiary of this financial gift. But the challenges don’t end there.

This week on the Financial Autonomy podcast I explore some of the ways I've seen clients work through what can be a difficult time.

Much has changed in the SMSF space in the past 5 years or so. In my financial planning practice we have closed more SMSF’s than we’ve opened recently. So it’s a good time to ask the question, are SMSF’s still useful?
