If you're fishing off the rocks in Esperance, you should always use the rock anchor tie-on points, available at many popular spots and/or wear a life jacket. Never turn your back on the ocean and stay off the black rocks!

It's National Safe Boating Week - Sat 1 October - Friday 7 October 2022

Focus of National Safe Boating Week for 2022 is on Lifejackets and their effectiveness in saving lives by promoting the following steps:

• Lifejackets—Wear it and Maintain it.

• If you end up in the water, you are much more likely to survive if you are wearing a lifejacket.

• When accidents happen, there’s rarely time to put a lifejacket on.

• A lifejacket only works if you’re wearing it.

• There are many types of lifejackets available today that meet the appropriate Australian standards, find the style that works for you and wear it.

• Lifejackets must be maintained to ensure reliable operation - this includes self-inspection and servicing by accredited agents

DANGEROUS ROCK FISHING WARNING⚠️

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast 4-5m building swells from early Sunday morning along the Albany and southern Leeuwin coastlines - rising to 6-7m by early Sunday afternoon stretching from Cape Leeuwin to Israelite Bay.

On Monday, the swell will move eastwards, easing below 3m around Cape Leeuwin initially during the afternoon, while increasing along the Eucla coastline to 5-6m. By Monday evening, swells along the southern Leeuwin and Albany coastlines will have dropped below 3m. The Esperance coastline will ease during Tuesday morning. Don’t put your life on the line by attempting rock fishing in this area over the next few days!

If you’re planning a fishing trip in this area on the weekend, we strongly advise you to take all precautions. For tips on staying safe visit https://fishandsurvive.com.au/

A Safety Equipment Review (SER) for all Western Australian vessels/watercraft has taken place by the Department of Transport Maritime involving a long consultation period with a wide number of stakeholders. Two sets of safety equipment rules governing recreational vessels in Western Australia will come into effect; one for Registrable Vessels and another for Non-Registrable Vessels. Marine Safety WA will post regular updates to inform recreational skippers and watercraft operators of these new conditions for improved safety.
Stay posted, and stay informed.
