WARNING - RIP-OFFS!! WOULD YOU EXPECT TO PAY $865 FOR A NEW TV ANTENNA?
I had a call from a lady at Beenleigh Neighbourhood Centre earlier, asking if I would consider $865 to replace the TV antenna, a few metres of cable, a new socket and flylead to be excessive? She said she had a call from an elderly lady she knows who just got charged $865 to replace her old TV Antenna.
Is The Pope a Catholic?
Damned right I would consider it to be excessive (unless it was made of gold, which won't work any better and may not be there tomorrow if someone saw it)... nearly 3 times what it should have cost.
What is it with people who see everyone (and especially the elderly) as a cash cow to be ripped off? Apparently, it was some National Franchise company (I won't mention the name, but I have heard of them and their ridiculous prices) because they wanted to know what state she lived in as they service every capital city. That alone should tell you they will charge like wounded bulls!
In the past month, I have had 4 customers who were quoted similar ridiculous prices and in every case, I did the job for less than 1/3 of what the others quoted.
Sure, we all have costs to cover and have to make a $ at the end of the day but consider that the median price for a TV Antenna is between $80 and $150 (plus fitting etc). Even allowing $65 for extra materials, that's $700 for an hour's labour. Please tell me who is worth $700 an hour? I have heard of people being told the antenna itself is $400! NO WAY!! There is no antenna on the market that retails for $400 or anywhere near it - that's just the installer's inflated price for a $100 antenna.
I have lived and worked in the local area since 1982, providing quality service and antennas at an affordable and realistic price, that's why so many past customers recommend me to their friends because I don't rip people off with ridiculous prices. If I can save you money by using an alternative antenna I will - as long as it does not compromise on the quality of your reception.
Don't be sucked in with warranties of 10 - 25 years. Ask yourself if the company will still be around in 25 years to honour the warranty. Franchises and Franchisees come and go constantly (the Franchisees when they realise it is the franchise company making all the money), and then suddenly the Franchise Company gets into some financial difficulty (like one I know of) and it just folds up. What good is your warranty now? Who is going to honour it if there is no company and the guy who installed it isn't interested or can't be contacted? Apart from the change from analogue phones to digital, my number hasn't changed in 40 years. Does that sound like I might be reliable and offer VALUE for your hard-earned dollar?? You don't stay in business for 40 years by ripping off the customer.
Do yourself (and me) a favour... if you need your TV Antenna replaced, want fast, reliable service from a local who knows the area (having lived here for 40 years) and want an honest and affordable price, DON'T CALL A FRANCHISE or one of the BIG COMPANIES with flashy ads and likewise high prices, and employees who sometimes don't give a damn. Call me and deal directly with the owner of the business - no employees, no fancy ads and no high prices and I will still be here to honour your warranty in the unlikely event you need it. THE BUCK STOPS WITH ME.
Many years ago, Mr Antenna used to have flashy ads on TV claiming they offered TV ANTENNAS FULLY INSTALLED from ONLY $99. Most people either didn't hear or see the word FROM. When the installer, who had paid $35,000 for his franchise, giving him the right to do antennas ONLY in a specified area, turned up, the price suddenly escalated astronomically because of various unforeseen reasons. On top of the franchise cost, he had to pay a fee for every lead whether he got the job or not. Now tell me how could you make money at $99? You couldn't, as it would not even cover his antenna and other materials let alone allow him to make any profit. But such were the things that sucked people in because they didn't know any different. Most people were convinced that they needed a different, more expensive, antenna because of their area or some other reason and simply accepted the NEW price without question. Back then, I STILL beat their quoted prices (not the $99 BS).
PEGASUS DIGITAL 0414577753 - Over 40 years of experience and 40 years a local business.
BTW - I currently have a range of economy digital antennas (no, not rubbish ones) to replace your old one FROM $190 including fitting (straight swap-over only, low-set houses) and 12 months warranty. I defy you to get a cheaper GENUINE price. If you can, I'll beat it on any of my antennas.

Who likes problems that are frustratingly impossible to solve?

I hate them and I love them. Oh yes, they really PI$$ me off when everything I do to solve them results in another DEAD END! But at the same time, I love them because they keep my brain active.

This week's problem surrounds a Bluetooth device to send the TV Audio direct to the customer's hearing aids. Sounds simple enough - plug it into the USB socket for power, plug the audio jack into the audio output, and Bob's yer Uncle... right? WRONG!! The damned thing doesn't want to work. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!

OK, WHY doesn't it work? I spent 2 hours or more trying to figure that out, even taking the elderly customer and her device back to the nearby AMPLIPHON shop where she got it. The consultant said (and I do believe her) that she plugged it into an audio source there and it transmits to the hearing aids just fine... So, back to the customer's home and plug it back into the TV, and... nope, it STILL doesn't work. What the hell is wrong? I have no idea. I rang the store back and advised the consultant of the fact it STILL does not work for the customer. AMPLIPHON said to ring the distributors...They weren't much help, only saying it's AMPLIPHON's problem because they sold it. Why is it that nobody wants to know about problems with the stuff they sell or distribute? Where is there customer service? Obviously doesn't exist even though they claim to have a Custome Service Dept., they just weren't interested because it wasn't purchased directly from them.
After trying both the optical and analog audio outputs on the TV and the optical output on the new FOXTEL box, I had to admit defeat. There was no way this damned thing was going to work - but WHY?
I had to leave the customer (who has promised to appraise me of the solution - if they find one) to pursue AMPLIPHON to make it work. I did everything (3 things) the instruction manual says but to no avail. There's one of those bloody GREMLINS lurking somewhere.

Job 2 - my first customer's brother who lives almost right on top of the hill in Mimi Ct. Mt. Warren Park.

The customer complained that quite often he experienced interference with his TV pictures and believed he probably needed a new antenna... checking and a signal test proved that to be correct.

The antenna itself was not the major cause of his problems, though it did have rusty connections, it was several houses farther up the hill (one was a double-story house) that were in the direct line of the incoming TV signal from Brisbane, and each had a metal roof that was once again deflecting the signal and causing it to drop out occasionally.

Solution: Replace the old Brisbane antenna with one for the Ormeau translator just a few km away which could be seen from the customer's front yard.

Having changed the antenna and aligned it the increase in signal levels was about 10-fold and 100% perfect on every channel. All that was left to do now was retune the TV to the new transmitter channels. Another very happy customer.

08/11/2022

This week has been pretty good so far... I was at the markets on Sunday and though I didn't sell anything I did pick up a job that turned into 2 jobs.

A gentleman from Park Lane in Bahrs Scrub (down in the gap between the hills - one of the worst areas for reception locally) enquired about having his TV reception fixed as he believed he did not have an antenna (later he discovered he did have one and sent me a photo of it which I identified as a UHF antenna for the Ormeau translator).
I had suggested he would probably be best with a UHF antenna for the Ormeau (Brisbane S.E.) translator due to Bahrs Hill blocking the signal from Brisbane.

On Monday I went to his house to see why the system was not working - I had an idea it might be to do with the power supply (or lack thereof) for the booster I could see in the photo of his antenna.
That turned out to be just one of several problems.

I was correct in thinking that there was an issue with the booster amplifier's power supply... there wasn't one, so of course, it didn't work. After installing a suitable power supply I tested the signals - worse than terrible, they were totally unusable... and yet some supposedly professional had installed this antenna and a booster that still did not work. Exactly how long ago it had been installed I could not say but the customer had bought the house a few years ago and never bothered to watch Free To Air TV... until now. Together we surmised the antenna may be as much as 10 years old.

A test on the antenna output to the booster showed it to be as bad as it was at the TV socket in the house... I removed the antenna after managing to get the rusted bolts/nuts of the clamp assembly undone enough to wriggle it off the short bracket it was mounted to and raised it as high as I could standing on top of the roof and observed the signal levels, and more importantly, the signal quality level of the various channels. The result... somewhat better but only on a couple of channels and every channel was arriving from a slightly different direction because of deflection by the hill. There was no way I was going to get anywhere with this antenna - in a clear, line-of-sight situation it would probably be OK, but not here.

After consulting with the customer I fitted an extension pole to the original, raising it to about 6 ft (2m thereabouts) above the roof - as high as was possible without going to a fully guyed mast of 5 - 7m (expensive!) and fitted a different antenna which although the signals still were not perfect, they were much better than with the old antenna. The new one also handled the deflected and scattered signals better, giving an overall 'satisfactory' picture on all channels with the occasional bit of signal disruption (tearing of the picture), which was as good as you could expect in this location without spending perhaps $500 - $600 (or more) and even then there would be no guarantee of a perfect picture. When you get between two large hills like this you really are up the creek in a very leaky canoe as the signals from both transmitters are mostly blocked by the hills on either side of the house.

The end result was a satisfied customer who could now watch TV. In situations like this, you have to really think outside the standard box. Fortunately for both the customer and myself, I have had plenty of experience with these kinds of situations, but what works at one does not necessarily work at another, however it does point you in the direction of a possible solution.

Photo 1 - the cutomer's original antenna aiming straight into the hill and dense trees.
Photo 2 - the new antenna system, still aiming at the hill and trees as that's the direction the signal comes from. This is why the signals are so poor in this area.

FIND THE TV ANTENNA

A while back I was asked to install a TV antenna for a shop of sorts in an old barn at a farmstay property in Boyland - that's out the south-western side of Mt. Tamborine... towards Beaudesert.

Anyway, the location is not important. What I wanted to share with you is how you have to think outside the box and look for the more 'unusual' solutions.

Now for me, installing an antenna is no big deal... I've done thousands over the past 40+ years, but this one though came with a specific challenge...

When you think of installing a TV Antenna, where would you expect it to go? On the roof would be the usual place. I admit I have installed a few antennas over my time in other places because that was where you got signal in some very difficult reception areas. That said, Boyland is relatively open and NOT a problem area for TV reception despite its distance from the transmitter. So what was different about this job? The owner said the barn roof was rusty (I could see that and had no intention of climbing on it) and also they didn't want an antenna on the roof or anywhere around the outside of the barn because it would detract from the aesthetic of the place. Fair enough, but where do you put the antenna if not on the roof? How about UNDER the roof?

A TV antenna underneath a metal roof would normally be akin to carrying water in a bucket with a huge hole in the bottom... it just doesn't work. So how do you make it work?

I knew the direction the antenna had to point so that was my starting point. I inspected the inside of the barn looking for somewhere to mount an antenna. I found a spot and fortunately, the end of the barn facing the TV transmitter on Mt. Cootha was all timber slats. Now dry wood does not really have much effect on TV signals, not like metal. Still, how does one install the TV antenna and support it under the barn roof? A normal J-MountTV antenna mounting bracket designed for fitting on a timber fascia wouldn't work because it extended too high and would not fit under the roof where it had to go as it is too tall.

Here's where thinking outside the box really came into play. OK, if the antenna can't go outside then that only leaves inside the barn and there was only one place to mount it where I could point it in the right direction and then run a cable to the shop.

With the help of my panel be**er we re-engineered the bracket for the antenna by cutting the end off a normal fascia mount and then welding it back onto the long end, thus providing enough clearance from the mounting spot for the antenna to be angled correctly. Ran and connected the cable and... it worked (of course). If you don't know where the antenna is hidden you'll probably never find it. Another benefit of it being inside the barn - it will never rust or corrode from the weather.

End result, another happy customer and one hidden TV antenna.

Just borrowed this picture because I think it is a great example of spending far more on your antenna than necessary and still ending up with the wrong one. :-)

Of course, this picture is a setup and the giant Parkes Telescope dish isn't really on their roof, but some people might be convinced by a salesperson in a store that this is what they need.

This one may be OK if you are trying to contact E.T. but for normal TV reception... as useless as a brown paper bag full of orange peel.

If you want the right advice and the right antenna for your house or motorhome, give Pegasus Digital a call on 0414 577 753 - we won't try and sell you a 200ft satellite dish.

22/09/2022

Nope, I'm not taking up residence here... well, not yet anyway. But if your TV Antenna has died then maybe it's time to give it a decent burial and fit a new one.
Just like people, TV Antennas DON'T live forever. Yes, some last longer than others but they all die one day.
Now comes the hard part... do you call an antenna specialist to do the job or do you go to the hardware shop, fork out a King's ransom for some U-Beut, fancy-looking thing the salesperson tells you will receive TV from Mars (because it says so on the box), get a ladder, some tools and climb on the roof to change it, all the while the wife is telling you not to fall off... sounds like the perfect weekend job. Of course, there's no guarantee that the expensive antenna you just bought is the right one for your location regardless of what the box says - "Fringe Area", "Multi-Band" "VHF-UHF"... what does all that mean? If you don't understand all that jargon, which way to point the antenna, how to correctly connect it and you don't know why some antennas are horizontally polarised and others are vertically polarized then you are best to leave it all to someone who not only understands all the 'jargon' but also knows which antenna will be best for your situation... hint, it isn't always the biggest and most expensive one. Size DOES matter... but so does frequency, angle, polarisation, bit error ratio and more.

Save yourself the hassle and possibly money and call me (David at Pegasus Digital). With over 40 years of experience, local knowledge (I've lived here for over 35 years), all the equipment (including a ladder :-) ) to do the job properly and will guarantee you have the right antenna and the best reception. The best part is you have zero chance of falling off the roof and getting into trouble with the Mrs.

Last Sunday I was at Beenleigh Markets and a guy came and asked if I knew anything about caravan antennas. Yes, they fit them on caravans and they are expensive. He wanted to know if I could check his one and fix it. Well, yes and no. If the antenna itself (those round, omnidirectional ones) is broken, the answer is no. They are a sealed unit and there is nothing repairable, you just have to dig deep and buy a new one. Dig deep? Yeah, they are over $400 each!
Why so expensive? I don't know, but as anyone who owns a caravan knows, parts can cost up to 10 times as much as the same part that is for normal domestic use.

On arrival to check out the caravan I found it was actually 4 second-hand imported caravans that had British-type power outlets in them that an electrician was in the process of replacing but who had also rewired the TV antennas on a couple of them. If there is one thing I know about electricians in general it is that they know nothing about TV antennas and how to wire the system. In one of the caravans the electrician had committed a mortal sin... he had actually cut one of those cheap $2 flyleads (for the TV to the wall socket) and used that on the input to the 4-way splitter off the caravan antenna. Of course, it didn't work. I replaced it with a proper quad shield cable but that only made a slight improvement. After bypassing the 4-way splitter and running the new cable there was a small improvement in signal levels but the antenna itself is hardly working. Who the hell needs 5 TV outlets in a 3.5m caravan? The output from the power supply for the built-in amplifier inside the antenna already has two outlets, so why would you want 5, where would you put 5 TVs?
Anyway, the net result was one worked reasonably well, two just worked (fairly poorly) and one didn't work. I am a TV Antenna Specialist, not a miracle worker; I cannot raise the dead.

One alternative to these expensive omnidirectional antennas is a high-gain directional normal TV antenna on a pole mounted to the drawbar and a cable from there to an external socket with a small amplifier inside the van. DIY, you can set one of these up for around $250 vs $500 or so to have a new omnidirectional antenna fitted as these are quite complicated to fit.

I always try to help people where I can but some people just don't appreciate it. A while back I obtained some parts, especially for a customer on FB who despite repeated assurances he would come and get them has never bothered. Oh well, he can go to the hardware shop and pay more, that's his loss.

Do you want or need to replace your antenna system? Is it kinda dodgy - only works sometimes? Want to DIY? No problem...

Special price, UHF/VHF TV Antenna (it has been used but is in perfect condition with a warranty), NEW J bracket for fascia mounting, 10m high-quality quad-shield cable and fittings - $90. One bundle only.
Other antennas and roof mount brackets are available - everything for DIY or have it fitted and correctly aligned by us.

If you have seen the prices of TV Antennas at Bunnings, Mitre 10 or Jaycar, forget them. We have a range of Italian Fracarro antennas and our own digital antennas for as little as $40. All are ready to just take home, mount on your pole and connect to your cable.

If you are not sure what kind of antenna is best for your location (you may be surprised to know that the biggest and most expensive one is not always the best) talk to the specialists at Pegasus Digital, with over 40 years of hands-on experience we know what works best and where.

27/05/2022

I have previously said there is a lot of misinformation out there about TV Antennas with so many YouTube videos claiming the person has made an antenna out of anything from a COKE can and a bit of wire to a piece of sheet metal hung on their wall which they allege can get you (and supposedly does for them) TV signals from hundreds of miles away; ostensibly if you live in Brisbane you could pick up Sydney or Melbourne with such an antenna. Also claims of receiving normal VHF and UHF Free-To-Air channels using a satellite dish. As I previously said, such claims are 100% pure BULLSH%T. Following is an unbiased video from a guy calling himself The TV Antenna Man in the USA who backs 100% everything I have said.
OK, he is talking about US TV channels and networks which are vastly different to Australia. The USA has hundreds of individual Networks around the country each broadcasting its own variety of programs, some mainstream and some special interest (there's one I know of that broadcasts a lot of stuff about trains while others might concentrate on sports). In Australia regardless of where you live, you can receive a maximum of 5 actual TV Networks, viz. ABC, SBS, 7, 9 & 10, including regional licence stations in places like Toowoomba or Wollongong that have some local news, sport and weather but mainly buy their programs from the major network they align with, so you will see the same shows on regional TV as you do in the city. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane etc, have exactly the same programs as each other so what point is there in getting Sydney from Brisbane or Adelaide from Sydney when you are only going to get the exact same programs as you get locally? None whatsoever.
Also, this guy busts the myth and lies that such super long-distance reception over land is even possible - the earth is round and TV signals (like all RADIO WAVES) travel in a straight line. Over the water is a different kettle of fish... I personally picked up NZBC1 from New Zealand when I lived in Singleton over 40 years ago. I was not trying to get it and it was freak reception that was just a fleeting, grainy, B&W TEST PATTERN image now and then with a jingle playing that similarly faded in and out. I actually thought it was an Ice Cream Man at first as my old analogue TV was on channel 0 and the large antenna I was playing around with to get Sydney just happened to be pointed SE towards New Zealand. With digital TV now I highly doubt you could repeat that fluke reception, but long-distance reception across the water (the ocean) is certainly possible, so all you Sydney or Melbourne-based Kiwis can contact me if you really want to try getting NZ. No guarantee of success.
Now, as to the combined VHF/UHF antenna he was reviewing (see picture below) which he said seemed to be good on VHF but poor on UHF... I have tested such an antenna myself with a digital signal meter at my test site, 1.4m above my roof at a distance of about 35km (NOT miles) from the transmitter at Mt. Cootha in Brisbane and the signal levels received on VHF CH 6 - 12 were reasonably good, ranging from around 65dB to 62dB with a high signal to noise ratio. That translates to enough signal to comfortably run 2 - 4 TVs if you have short cable runs and high-quality RG6 Quad shield cable... which most houses don't. So let's say even with 'average quality' cable it will run 2 TVs with somewhere around 55dB at the TV. The minimum recommended level is 50dB even though your DIGITAL TV will show no difference in picture quality at 45dB you have less headroom to account for variations in signal level due to atmospheric conditions and to prevent ingress of electrical noise that can destroy your picture (it won't hurt the TV). 60dB at the set is even better but don't think you need heaps of signal - you don't. In fact, DIGITAL TVs don't like too much signal and it can be as bad or worse than not enough signal. Just imagine someone shouting right into your ear... now you understand what I am saying. I too found this antenna to be rather poor in UHF performance on the Brisbane S.E. transmitter on Ormeau Hill which transmits on CH 29 - 33 (Note: American channel numbers and frequencies do not correspond to Australian TV channels so when you watch the video don't take too much notice of Networks and channels.) the 'Ormeau translator' (so-called because it only collects and retransmits the Brisbane channels on different frequencies, it does not create any new TV networks). My test results on CH 29 - 33 were rather dismal compared to other UHF antennas I tested. Why? Design! What the guy in the video talks about - is element length and spacing. I have tested countless UHF antennas on this transmitter which as the crow flies is about 8 km from my home so I know what designs work best and worst. I should add here that there is a huge power output difference between the main Brisbane transmitter and this one because it does not need to nor was designed to cover a large area. It is a low-powered directional 'fill-in' transmitter to overcome black spots. ALL the UHF antennas I tested work satisfactorily at this distance and yield between 55 and 70 dB of signal. 15dB is a hell of a difference considering 3dB is a 50% increase/decrease in signal, but as long as you have enough signal, the extra won't make any difference to your picture but it will make a difference in whether you have enough signal for 3 or 4 TVs.
I could go on all night about antennas and how they work and why this one is better than that one etc but really, you should either have an antenna specialist install the BEST antenna for your location or consult such a person before buying an antenna from a hardware or electronics shop. It is like asking Dr Google why you have a pain somewhere. The advice you'll get is not specific to your actual condition, it is a generalisation of 'probable' causes.
Anyway, watch this video and be enlightened and know that I am not trying to baffle you with BS, everything I have said is 100% correct and borne out by this independent test and review.

FINALLY... sunshine. yes, that big yellow light in the blue sky (well, when the clouds don't cover it up). That means I might now be able to do some actual antenna replacements, instead of just the odd retune and sort reception in a caravan at Beenleigh Showgrounds. Not that I object to these little 'inside' jobs, they all help pay the bills and not much else I can do when it keeps raining.

SPECIAL OFFER
Times are tough, right? Petrol has gone through the roof, food has gone up, and now electricity is going up as much as 15%. The 'average' price in Brisbane for a replacement antenna fitted is now around $260! Well, I have a super deal for everyone who needs their antenna replaced around the Logan City area (Mt. Gravatt to Pimpama and Browns Plains). At Pegasus Digital we have a supply of quality rebuilt digital antennas which we are going to offer at a ridiculous price of just $100 including fitting (usually $160). No, that is not a mistake. $100 - that's LESS THAN HALF the average price. BUT... it's only until June 30 (while existing stock lasts) and ONLY the standard VHF antennas for Brisbane and the standard UHF ones for the Ormeau transmitter as per the pictures below. Note: Pictures are for illustration only and the actual model and colour will vary. #

WHAT'S INCLUDED
Online pre-inspection to determine which antenna is going to best suit your situation (looking at your house and the overall location on Google).
