See you (and everyone else) there Ruth.
A few words from a Living Treasure about to embark on a trip 'up north' for the Darwin International Jazz and Arts Festival.
Michael Leunig's Readings, Ponderings and Paintings sees the acclaimed cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet deliver his own ponderings while painting live, with his work projected on screen for the audience to follow, all accompanied by a musician playing live on stage.
It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Darwin audiences who have the opportunity to purchase the created artworks via auction on site.
We are incredibly fortunate to have Michael delivering two sessions of this show for us at Darwin Entertainment Centre on July 22. Tickets will sell out, get yours over at yourcentre.com.au.
Darwin International Jazz & Arts Festival, presented by Skinnyfish Music, celebrates culture, arts and music, all brought together for one night in July - the Dinidjanggama (heavy dew season) of Garramilla, Gulumoerrgin, Larrakia country.
When we were teenagers Charlie Chan and I were double bass players, up the back of the orchestra in Melbourne, laughing about being in an orchestra, playing along with all our might to the incredible sound of an 80 piece orchestra, and loving being 2 of a section of 8 bass players. We ended up going our separate ways, but here we are reuniting, still with basses in our orbits, and dogs.... but this time Charlie will come and play an improvised solo show, on the Steinway in DEC, in the main Playhouse, at 7.45pm on Saturday July 22. They've just completed a 26 hour concert, and have had national media stories almost continuously over the past few months on SBS, ABC Radio National and ABC TV, Sydney Morning Herald and more about everything from solo improvisations, Charlie Chan AI ("ChAI"), to even recording and releasing one album every week this year. Charlie's an extraordinary talent and has never performed in Darwin. On stage after Vince Jones their show will fill the auditorium with inspiration, so please come just for this show, or plan to get a drink after the Vince show and stay to take in this extraordinary performer. We have been visiting Ngukurr for 25 years. A long time ago I worked with an old man Roy Wilfred who sang me a song cycle.
More recently I have worked with this other member Daniel Wilfred of the Wilfred family, a traditional family who spend their lives maintaining traditional song, and culture.
More recently I have been dealing with a group of collaborators from a community in Perth - through Kamal Thurairajah & @chitambara7666 who took Daniel Wilfred to KL. They are aPerth based Indian arts organisation who have been working with Wagilak Yolngu leader Daniel Wilfred.
In August 2022, they conducted their Re-Searching Gondwana residency in Malaysia with Daniel where they visited many sacred sites and also met Malaysian Indigenous people. The main focus of the residency was to seek connections between the ancient cultures of the connected lands from Australia through South East Asia to India and Africa. Please watch (and listen to) the highlights from the residency in Kuala Lumpur: https://youtu.be/Zu3VIS6ejus
There is now a collective under the instigation of Peter Knight who are collecting money to help him buy a "Culture Car". If you're interested in helping support him please read further, whilst you take in the magic he is able to create.
Daniel is asking for assistance to get a vehicle to cover the arduous journeys he makes (sometimes more than 10 hours on dirt roads) - which is a continual frustration and real hindrance on lots of levels. In particular it makes it hard for him to teach the young people; the next generation of song keepers.
