The New Queens Wharf and Neville Bonner Bridge project in Brisbane, Australia, is a significant infrastructure development that has transformed the city's waterfront. The project involved the construction of a new ferry terminal, a pedestrian bridge, and a parkland area, all designed to revitalize the Brisbane River and enhance the city's connectivity.

**History:**

The original Queens Wharf, built in the 1860s, played a crucial role in Brisbane's maritime history. However, over time, it fell into disrepair and became a less attractive part of the city. In 2010, the Queensland Government announced plans to redevelop the area, aiming to create a vibrant and accessible waterfront destination.

The Neville Bonner Bridge, named after a prominent Indigenous Australian politician, was constructed as part of the project. The bridge connects South Bank Parklands to the Brisbane CBD, providing a pedestrian and bicycle pathway over the Brisbane River. Its modern design and stunning views of the city have made it a popular attraction for both locals and visitors.

**New Features:**

The redeveloped Queens Wharf features a state-of-the-art ferry terminal, making it easier for commuters and tourists to access the city's riverfront. The terminal also incorporates retail and dining options, adding to the area's appeal.

Adjacent to the terminal is a new parkland area, designed to provide a relaxing and enjoyable space for the community. The park features landscaped gardens, walking paths, and outdoor seating areas, offering a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city.

**Impact on Brisbane:**

The New Queens Wharf and Neville Bonner Bridge project has had a significant impact on Brisbane. It has revitalized the city's waterfront, creating a more attractive and accessible destination for locals and visitors. The project has also boosted economic activity in the area, attracting new businesses and jobs.

In addition to its economic benefits, the project has also improved the city's connectivity, making it easier for people to travel between the CBD and South Bank. The Neville Bonner Bridge has become a popular route for commuters and tourists alike, offering a scenic and convenient way to cross the Brisbane River.

Overall, the New Queens Wharf and Neville Bonner Bridge project is a testament to Brisbane's commitment to urban renewal and sustainable development. The project has transformed the city's waterfront, creating a vibrant and attractive destination that will benefit generations to come.

🎆 RiverFire 2017 opening - FLYBY for 2 RAAF EA-18G Growlers
Looking through some old videos and found this from the opening for Riverfire 2017.

Eleven tonnes of fireworks were set off to a music list aiming to evoke “musical memories from the last 20 years”.

The Story Bridge will reopen at 8pm as half a million revellers make their way home or to the Riverfire afterparty.

Extra train services have been added tonight and those leaving from South Brisbane, South Bank and Roma St Station will travel free.

The Victoria Bridge reopens at 11pm, as will Grey St, while roads around Kangaroo Point are due to reopen around 9.30pm.

Eager Riverfire crowds were left waiting this afternoon as the C-17 Globemaster plane fails to fly over the Brisbane river.

The RAAF C-17 Globemaster plane was scheduled to fly overhead at 5pm, but failed to do so.

Organisers told The Courier-Mail the plane has been rescheduled for 6pm.

Crowds along the Brisbane River in Southbank, Kangaroo Point and New Farm are expected to swell to about 500,000 tonight at the height of the Riverfire activities.

After 15 minutes of empty skies, four of the Army’s MRH-90 helicopters stepped in as scheduled at 5.15pm to wow the bewildered crowd.

Online, social media users are wondering if the Globemaster pilot and crew got caught up watching the Richmond Tigers crush the Adelaide Crows at the AFL Grand Final.

Today’s event caps of the 22-day Brisbane Festival and kicked off at 3.30pm.

Crowd favourite jets the RAAF EA-18G Growlers are scheduled to appear at 5.40pm and will return at 7.05pm to help mark the start of the night’s pyrotechnics display which will see 11 tonnes of fireworks launched into the Brisbane sky.

EARLIER: Some of the military’s most impressive hardware will be on display this afternoon as the annual Riverfire lights up the Brisbane skyline.

The event, which caps of the 22-day Brisbane Festival, will kick off from 3.30pm with displays from aircraft including the RAAF Roulettes and the Army’s MRH-90 helicopters.

Displays from the RAAF’s new EA-18G Growlers are expected to be one of the crowd favourites and will help mark the start of the night’s pyrotechnics display which will see 11 tonnes of fireworks launched into the Brisbane sky.

Squadron Leader Jay Tuffley, who flies Roulette One, said it was a “real honour” for the pilots to perform at Riverfire. “It’s pretty awesome for us to be able to put on a display for the 20th Riverfire,” he said.

“It allows people to watch an airshow right in their CBD.

“It’s a phenomenal sight.”

The EA-18G Growlers are some of the newest hardware in the Australian military, capable of providing electronic warfare support by disrupting and deceiving military systems including radars and communications.

Brisbane Festival Artistic Director David Berthold said the defence force displays were always a crowd favourite at the annual event.

“This is probably the biggest Australian Defence Force display we’ve had,” he said.

“We usually get somewhere towards half a million people lining the river so it will certainly be a big night.”

But last-minute revellers will be hard-pressed finding a free table along the river tonight, with reservation lists filled months in advance. Tickets for spots at some restaurants cost anywhere between $99 and $160 or more for a three-course meal during the annual spectacular.

Spots at ARIA, along Eagle St Pier, are said to start filling up the day after Riverfire as customers secure their spots a year in advance.

Salt Water Pots by Michelle Yeatman

This work is presented in this format thanks to Shine On Gimuy Festival 2023.
The sand shells and saltwater of Yarrabah's beaches reflect a personal connection for the artist to country that shines through these nine large ceramic 'Jilgi' pots, ranging in size from 1m to 3m in diameter.

The pots are representative of our saltwater country and a reminder to us all of the value of water as a great healer, which cleanses, purifies, and like art is a blessing. In addition, the sea salt is believed to have a healing and rejuvenation quality and the different sizes of the pots are reminiscent of the moon cycles, symbolising the importance of observing tidal change.

Artist: Michelle Yeatman
Michelle (Mickey) Yeatman was born and bred in the Yarrabah community. She commenced employment at the Yarrabah pottery studio in 1982 as an apprentice mixing raw clay, but soon discovered her real love was in hand building pots. Influenced by Thanakupi, Michelle’s own particular style of applying various designs to the earthenware that she produces has distinguished her in the field of ceramics although she is also an excellent painter and print maker.

Submergence by Squidsoup

Submergence is an immersive, walkthrough experience using many thousands of individual points of suspended light to create feelings of presence and movement within physical space.

The installation transforms space into a hybrid environment where virtual and physical worlds coincide. As you enter the piece, you walk into a space occupied by both real and virtual components, and you can affect both. The piece moves through several movements, which in its entirety, forms an abstract narrative with a gradual increase in tension, building to a final climax. Each movement has its own elements, atmosphere and responsiveness however they are also all open to one’s own interpretation.

Artist: Squidsoup
Squidsoup is a UK-based international group of artists, researchers, technologists and designers working with digital and interactive media experiences. Their work combines physical and dynamic digital spaces with novel and intuitive forms of interaction to produce immersive, responsive and beguiling experiences.
