When firefighters arrived to battle a large fire in Gastonia on Wednesday, they had to overcome frozen fire hydrants, according to the fire chief.
The fire is burning on East Ozark Avenue near the water tower at Exit 19 of Interstate 85. The building that is burning is a vacant building. Officials described it as a three-story, 10,000-square-foot building. It may have been abandoned for as many as 20 years, according to Gastonia Fire Department Chief Phillip Bryson Welch Jr.
With water now pouring onto the fire, firefighters continue to battle the flames while keeping themselves safe from the dangerously cold temperatures. At 5 a.m., the temperature in Gastonia was 22 degrees with a wind chill of 13 degrees.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but officials are looking into the possibility a man with a propane tank may have started the fire.
"At this convenience store [across the street], a police officer saw a person with a propane tank go into the building and then heard an explosion and saw him run away," Welch told reporters. "So we're trying to track that down now."
Welch believes the building has been used by people without homes.

Pacific Palisades fire can be seen burning from downtown Los Angeles.
The flames from a fire that broke out Tuesday evening near a nature preserve in the inland foothills northeast of LA spread so rapidly that staff at a senior living center had to push dozens of residents in wheelchairs and hospital beds down the street to a parking lot. The residents — one as old as 102 — waited there in their bedclothes as the night sky glowed red from flames and embers fell around them until ambulances, buses and even construction vans arrived to take them to safety.
The traffic jam on Palisades Drive prevented emergency vehicles from getting through and a bulldozer was brought in to push the abandoned cars to the side and create a path. Video along the Pacific Coast Highway showed widespread destruction of homes and businesses along the famed roadway.

Santa Ana winds are fueling the quick spread of Pacific Palisades fire.
Flames were being pushed by Santa Ana winds topping 60 mph in some places Tuesday, increasing to 80 mph by early Wednesday, according to reports received by the National Weather Service. They could top 100 mph (160 kph) in mountains and foothills — including in areas that haven’t seen substantial rain in months.
