Our latest title covers the intensive empirical field work of Dr Lior Rosenburg, a political sociologist specialising in contemporary China, who examines the national Village Redevelopment Program, one of China’s most significant policies of recent decades to promote rural change.

This Program was supposed to prioritise poorer villages, but instead was used to subsidise improved infrastructure and services in already industrialised and prosperous villages, while leaving behind the poorer ones.

'Grassroots Law in Papua New Guinea' examines village courts. How do non-metropolitan Papua New Guineans engage with this part of the legal system designed for them? And how do they experience other court-like forums, with their differing legal sensibilities, that exist in dialogue with the formal legal system without necessarily being part of it?

This study reveals a grass roots perspective on the indigenisation of the state in Papua New Guinea and makes an ethnographically informed contribution to broader debates in legal anthropology, specifically as these intersect with the New Legal Realism.

A really great review of ‘A Young Englishman in Victorian Hong Kong: The Diaries of Chaloner Alabaster, 1855–1856’, by Peter Gordon, published this month in Asian Review of Books.

You never know what’ll show up in the archives. In 2015, Benjamin Penny stumbled across the 19th-century diaries of one Chaloner Alabaster in the Special Collections room of London’s SOAS. Alabaste…

Myanmar’s coup on 1 February 2021 abruptly ended a decade of (limited) economic and political liberalisations and plunged the country into civil war and a deep humanitarian crisis.

This collection, edited by Anthony Ware and Monique Skidmore, with contributions from a variety of other experts in the field of political, development and humanitarian studies offers empirically based advice on the sorts of policy and practical responses international actors have, could and perhaps should make.

The coup in Myanmar on 1 February 2021 abruptly reversed a decade-long flirtation with economic and political freedoms.

The contributors to ‘After the Coup’ offer timely insights into ways international actors can try to reduce the suffering of millions of citizens who are again being held hostage by a brutal and self-serving regime.

In our latest title, many of the chapters explore ethical and practical tensions around how memory operates in places where injustice has occurred, and where there are complex reasons for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to both remember and/or forget, and to share and/or protect knowledge and memories of the past.

These are crucial issues to consider as researchers work with the history of the landscape archive, engage with memories of place, and learn from the knowledge of Traditional Owners in processes of truth-telling and collaboration.
